Ion tokens on large base ships. I know large base ships are not affected by a single ion and it takes two to affect a large base ship. If you manage to pit an ion token on a large base does it leave at the end of the turn or does it stick around untill a second one can get put on it

It stays until it gets 2, then the effect takes place and both get discarded.

As a quick follow up. To place an Ion token does the shot need to hit the hull or can you hit a shield and still place the ion token?

You need to score a hit to place a ion token. A hit isn't based on how many shields the ship has, or how much damage you do.

You simply need to have one or more uncanceled <hit> or <crit> results left over after the compare results step.

There is no "hit the hull" versus "hit a shield" distinction. As long as the shot with an ion weapon hits (ie there are [hit] or [crit] results that are not canceled by [evade] results) the text triggers and places the ion token(s).
