Small Tournament in Calgary

By Drasnighta, in Star Wars: Armada

Small tournament alongside our Armada League at the Sentry Box today...

... Taking a List that's a pair of Upgraded Victory-Is and *far too many* basic TIE fighters... For Laughs.

We'll see how things go.

There's no such thing as too many basic TIE fighters.

There is something to be said for a cheapo 8 pt blue die platform in large numbers.

With eight or more you can leapfrog them in front of ships to hit every turn even without Rhymer. One group stays in position to fire, the other group leaps forward to where the ship is going to move. Rinse repeat. Even 2-3 shield damage a turn is enough to leave the biggest ships reeling and unprepared for any ship engagement, and if you present them with both TIEs and a ship in the same arc, they'll almost always choose to fire at the ship, leaving your fighters to continue plinking away.

For Anti-squadron duty, stick Howlrunner within range 1 of your TIE swarm and enjoy the four die attacks with re-rolls. Anything short of a 100 pt Y-Wing stack is going to have trouble dealing with that much damage spread across that many targets, even if they are only 3 hp.

I try to look at the low HP as an advantage. After all any damage they pull off in excess of 3 with some fancy combo is utterly wasted on them. (Yavaris can be a problem, admittedly)

Call me nutty, but I LOVE TIE fighters.

Well, So you see... I got there with my List... And then found out that every other player had Imperials...

... So 10 minutes before Tournament Start, I smacked out a Rebel list with stuff I had on hand...

AFMkII B
+ Garm

+ Adv Projectors

Neb B Escort
+ Yavaris
+ Engine Techs

Corvette A
+ Engine Techs

Keyan Farlander
B-Wing
Y-Wing
Y-Wing
A-Wing

...

And got 3rd.

First Game was vs a Victory - Gladiator - Glad/Demolisher list. All loaded with ACMs, Intel, Gunnery, etc, etc.

Contested Outpost, I was Player 2.
Demolisher ran head-first into Yavaris' nose shooting, as well as the Bs and Ys... Dead Demolisher for minimal damage.

AFMKII started Perpendicular to line of Imperial Approach, and added just one Side arc most of the time.

After being done with Demolisher, Squadrons Engaged Screed's Victory, and Trashed it.

Walked away with an 8-2 victory, which would have been better had not I basically gifted him the Corvette Kill as a failed flanking Maneuver.

Second Game, Vic-II, Vic-II, Demolisher, and some Fighter Coverage. Rhymer, Bomber, Soontir, Interceptor, TIE.

Superior Positions. Spent most of the game at Speed 3 with all 3 ships in tight formation scooting around the Imperial Approach.

Lost this game 88 to 65. 77 of my lost 88 were Yavaris mis-timing his Navigate command and hitting the table edge by a few mm. Had I had that Extra Yaw at Speed 1, would have made the turn.

Third Game, Contested Outpost. Vic, Vic, Vic Motti list, with 4 Squads of Interceptors.

Total Dice Fail this game. Keyan and the B were tied down really early by the interceptors, and were rolling Crit-Crit-Acc against the Interceptors, and then taking Hit-Hit in return for Counters...

Ended up holding the Outpost for turns 1 and 2. Turns 3-6 he held the outpost by parking a Victory on it and reducing to Speed 0, shielding it with the 3rd Victory.

I lost the Corvette to an unfortunate set of Criticals that laid on the extra damage. Smashed one Victory with the combined weight of Fire of the AFMKII, Yavaris, and chasing it for 2 turns with Y Wings...

Lost this game 118 to 101.

But with a clear win and two very close draws, was enough for 3rd...

Had I had more time to prepare, and actually had my X-Wings with me, I probably would have done even better overall. But I couldn't complain over 3rd Place with 10 minute Rebels.

Well done Dras!! Nice to hear you did well with fighters too :)

Yeah. I think given 20/20 hindsight. I think I would have replaced Keyan with just a regular B-Wing, as he never used his ability, and his braces didn't make a huge difference.

So with that, and replacing the A-Wings with X-Wings, which only rolled Counter Once all day (and wouldn't have needed to probably, if they threw 4 dice like an X-Wing) I'd start to be getting somewhere...

Engine Techs were Hit and Miss, I could probably do without them... That nets me another Y-Wing or Two...

Yeah, I could go all out, if I pick up another Squadron Pack.

I'm not sure of Keyan either, I tend to go for the extra bwing sqd and save the pts, also I've tried ET, but some times ya just don't have points so I like nav T.

Nav's work good on Nebs too :)

Again, Good Hunting my man !

3rd out of how many contestants? What's big/small for Calgary?

3 out of 6 today... But we're expecting more for Sullust, Especially because we had 8 for our first tournament a while back, and half of those people weren't there today...

We have big conflicts with X-Wing at the moment, and the fact that another store decided to run an Armada Tournament out of the Blue on the Saturday, when ours was on a Sunday, that oversaturated the area... Not the first time they've done it, either, just the first time with Armada...

For us 6 persons at a tournament is quite respectable. While we've been having quite a few tournaments in our area, we don't seem to get a lot of people out to each one anymore. 4 has been the average, of late. We're definitely hoping for more at the Sullust tourneys, but with 5 of them - with overlaps - we're probably going to be spread pretty thin.

As far as I know, the Sentry Box is the only one of Calgary's 5 Main Retailers to do Massing at Sullust... 6 Retailers if you count those who deal with FFG's exclusive Distributor for other things, such as X-Wing.

It does also help that The Sentry Box is one of, if not, *the* largest pure gaming store in the Americas.

That is big. At 13,000 sq. ft. it beats our biggest (Guardian Games) by 3,000 sq. ft.

Though, I wonder. Guardian says it has 10,000 sq. ft. of gaming space. But that might not include retail space.

So, is Sentry Box just so hegemonic over the others that they decided not to hold a Sullust event?

I was at the other store's tournament on the Saturday. Only 5 people there, and I know 3 of them were going to head to the Sentry Box tourney. The tournament on Saturday is always the same day every month, so it wasn't like it was "out of the blue". And IIRC, the Sentry Box cancelled their Armada tournament earlier in the month to make room for a MTG game session.

There is plenty of room for 2 Armada tournaments a weekend. No need for sour grapes

Refining my Choices going forward... I'm probably only going to have 1 or 2 Practice games come League Night on September 27th in preparation for Sullust on the 4th... But it is also entirely possible that I don't get any more Practice at all...

Still have 12 odd points to spend, and part of me wants to go back to that AFMKII A with the Double Anti-Squadron... That killed so many TIEs over the weekend...

But, going to shuffle the list to the List part of the Forums now :D

From what little I know, the Sentry Box looks like the only event venue in Alberta (I only heard of two others in western Canada for sure, one in Vancouver and one in Winnipeg.) I could be wrong and just have missed something, but it's pretty impressive.

-laughs- and good work, Dras. I probably shouldn't say toooo much, it's looking a lot like my fleet with a few little substitutions:P The Mk.IIA's are good, but the extra points make them painful. I've been experimenting with two MK.II'salong with the Yavaris, and it's a little on the unforgiving side if only because I don't get quite the squadron coverage that I like. But Mk.IIA with gunnery teams is just delightful for clearing out those hard to reach 'Soontir' TIEs and not skimping against ships.

I just want some lovin' for this game in Saskatoon ;_;
