Forgotten Souls, Fogged Filled Passage

By Rodiger17, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I have just gotten Forgotten Souls and I have played a few games over the weekend with four Heroes from the Base Game. I have drawn Fog Filled Passage three times. The first time, it came a room or so after the Room of Souls and I was playing shop cards incorrectly so my Heroes were a bit overpowered. The next two though, it was the third and second room, and what happened both times was when it was the Overlords turn, the Zombies moved up into a group of five all next to each other blocking the passage. This meant that each Zombie had four Shields to start before their Defence Dice Roll. So I needed to roll five hits to cause one Wound and hope that they didn’t get a shield. As they were in a block I could only attack with two Heroes. I managed to kill one Zombie after about ten attacks, needless to say I didn’t complete the room before the Timer ran out, and I decided to give up as it was going to be another couple of goes before I could activate the next room card, and if you have taken that many Peril Cards, Advanced Doom that far, and taken that much damage by the second room, you are not going to complete the quest. Have I been doing something wrong? Has anyone else had this problem?

Thanks.

You're not doing something wrong from what I see. Fog filled passage is a brutal room to have come up early. The coop expansions are difficult, especially with 4 heroes. The increased difficulty is there to make up for the fact that the monsters are just taking random actions, not being controlled by a thinking opponent.

I agree with Zaltyre. We have found that the co-ops are especially difficult with 4 heroes. While we have beaten all 3 co-ops with 2 or 3 heroes multiple times, we have only beaten 2 of the co-ops with 4 heroes, and have only done so once each.

Quite frankly, this is why I enjoy these, as they are a true challenge. You will find, over time, that strategies develop to address various situations. But, at the same time, things can drastically change (be easier or harder) depending on exactly WHEN you hit a particular room.

We actually give much thought as to when, for example, we trigger the change from Act I to Act II. This is just an example of some of the deeper thought that has to go into your overall planning to be successful in these co-ops.

If at all possible, I try not to open a new room in Forgotten Souls unless a majority of the hero party has not yet taken their turn. This is especially critical with Fog Filled Passage where you simply can't afford to let the zombies get into the position you described.. I realize that's not always possible however.

Thanks for the replies. I played through Forgotten Souls again last night with Three Heroes. I found the whole campaign much easier and I even completed it. I drew Fog Filled Passage somewhere between the first and second main rooms, it did not cause me too much trouble this time as I had some better weapons and skills and having one less Zombie makes a huge difference.

This makes me nervous. I have not played to co-ops yet with 4 heroes

I think we have the best time attempting it with 4 heroes, as it is the most challenging to win.

Normally, we deal each player 3 hero cards, and they can select from one of the three to play. We allow all 4 of the heroes to compare selections, to allow for the best overall team to be created. This provides some variance in the characters played, and forces some tough decisions at times on the group.

Yesterday, we actually played a co-op by doing something completely different. We shuffled all of the hero cards (I own everything for D2e), and dealt precisely 1 hero card to each player.

We ended up with a completely new, never before played team. We spent some time before playing discussing how we would utilize the heroes, and worked together to pick the best classes for each.

Interestingly enough, we actually beat the co-op for our third win with 4 heroes. Fun was had by all. In addition, we actually learned some things about some of the heroes that rarely see action.

wheren't you afraid to end up with 4 heroes of the same type (4 warriors, ..) ?
just for curiosity... which heroes did you get ?

Similar question here. Did you break up the heroes by type? And how did you randomize since the heroes are printed on both sides?

It doesn't sound like they split them up by type, he said shuffle them all together. I imagine the way to randomize them is just to not look at them whilst shuffling. If you're not limiting it to one of each archetype, there are over 10 million different 4-hero teams.
