Speculation - Kylo Ren Sword Form

By xXWarsmithXx, in X-Wing Off-Topic

Is anyone else hoping that he uses a fighting form based on the German sword forms in the medieval ages?

Here is a video of some recreators, notice the binds and some of the very elaborate parries.

Absolutely yes.

Buy mainly I'm ho[ping it's just a violent and destructive form - none of the OTT choreographed acrobatic grace of the prequel trilogy, just effective and brutal.

What he said

Kylo might not even know about different forms. His saber looks like a janky basement project.

I agree. I would love to see some glissades and pommel/crossguard strikes.

The entire video is great, go to 0:45 to see a pommel strike and 1:10-1:48 to see two different glissades.

I hope not, I would be happy if there were no more Highlander sword fights ever. I was hoping that the cross guards were made of beskar and he had beskar gauntlets. Nothing says owned like grabbing the opponents blade out of their own hands

I don't think beskar survived the EU purge. Cortosis did though, so maybe.

Originally (as in ANH), lightsabers were always 2 hand stance because they were supposed to explode with a lot of energy when they clashed. That slowly turned into the ultra-light style we know now.

But the cross blade makes me wonder. It does appear to be sort of 'exhausts' from the blade as they're more fiery than lightsaber. Has Kylo overclocked his blade where it requires 2 hands now? Then maybe yes, we would see a more medieval style.

I've seen some toys look like this that make me think he can crank up the juice.....

But it's a fairly small toy so I wonder if it was fudged for cost/stability reasons.

I would love a medieval style. I also like the idea that he's got a muscle car of a sabre. Lacking control and high technology, but scads of extra power.

Yes and no. While the sword is definitely reminiscent of a german hand and a half sword (which I have) the fighting style would be impractical with a lightsaber, murder strokes and half handing - common maneuvres from the german codi (codii, codexii, what is the plural of codex?) would simply lead to self mutilation. (Unless he had cortosis lined gauntlets, in which case holy ****!) Aditionally the style is quite slow and brutal, and given the overall strength of lightsabers faster, more elegant methods would probably be more effective.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the 15th century german style, I've practiced it, it's my favourite. But I don't think it right for a lightsaber,

Ultimately the german style is all about bludgeoning and wrestling an opponent into submission, then poking them in the face/underarm/weak spots in armour.

For my part. I still want Stormtroopers with light-bayonets.

*the more you know...*

Seriously, that was an interesting bit of information. Does the style change against opponents without armor, or is it assumed that armor is always present (or foes without armor don't need special techniques)?

Generally half handing etc assumes armour, but basic strikes and stances do not. They do however assume the weight of the blade. The key thing in the fechtbuch was the reliance of wrestling for melee. It was highly focused upon.

I agree that half handing was done to increase point control and thrusting power to better penetrate maille or get in between the gaps of armor, which isn't something lacking in lightsabers. I would love to see something different than standing and hitting sticks (OT) and whippy lightswords with acrobatic flips (PT) in the new movies, which would give us a variety of fighting forms across all three. I don't think we will see wrestling though, unless Ren has some serious armor going on (this would be amazing  ). I will just be happy if we get pomel/crossguard strikes, half swording (maybe he has lightsaber resistant gauntlets ) and some glissades. Too bad we didn't see any rapier/foil binds with Count Dooku.

Well I think Kylo Rens sabre has a rear sabre-spike, at least one of the toys shows it... So that pommel strike might well happen. Crossguard it's just rude not to.

Yes, the cross guard looks cool but it is a little self defeating, cant really protect the knuckles from bashing into things if the cross guard also goes into it. Still, cross guard FTW!

The Deluxe toy saber comes with a lightdagger that can attach to the bottom. Not sure how much to read into that as it's part of the bladebuilder line.

However, the saber on my elite series die-cast kylo is painted red on the back of the hilt and the little jr toys do not.

You know guys, If you ever get a chance to, you know having the internet and all maybe you should look up the talhoffer fechtbuch. Given it's a historical document I suspect that for educational purposes it is legally free to download online.

Even better, that search took me less than 3 seconds.

I've actually looked at that in the past. Pretty cool stuff. Are you affiliated with ARMA, or some other group, or independently educated?

Independent. I've been teaching myself techniques based on the fechtbuch for ~ a decade.

Yayyyy!! The ARMA is awesome, they have a great library! I was a little worried that you might be a SCA or larper, and soon begin with nonsense.

Nah, just a self taught amateur..
