Fleets without commanders

By Ceryliae, in Star Wars: Armada

I played against someone last night who ran a fleet without a commander. I told him that was against the rules, but when I looked it up I couldn't find anything that said a Commander was required. I have always thought that a Commander is required. What does everyone think about this? He said he wasn't running a commander because he needed the points to make his fleet work. I think that the benefits from a Commander far outweigh the points you would save. Has anyone run a no commander fleet?

You are correct, in that it's required. look at Flagship on page 6 in the refference.

In Summary:

You must have an Admiral.

Any ship can have your Admiral Upgrade Card (which is why the Commander upgrade icon only appears on card backs, and not on Ship Cards).

Any ship With an Admiral (Commander) Upgrade Card is a Flagship.

You can only have One Flagship.

God dammit, I knew it. There was nothing under the entry for Commander, though.

You must have a Flagship, and what makes a ship a Flagship is having a Commander upgrade.

Yeah - I know that, I get the logic. Last night I didn't want to waste any time so I just looked up the Commander entry.

This was my first rules thing that popped up when I started. . .

Me and my friend play without commanders in our campaign game so we don't have to use historical personalities mwahaha. we don't need your rules man :P

That's pretty cute, I wish there was some less famous budget commanders coming up in the future. Quite want to make myself having heard that now though.

The fleet commander rules are about as clear as the XI7 turbolaser/Advanced projector combo. FFG needs to faq this sh..

My preference would be no commanders required or a zero cost commander. Maybe even some negative cost commanders.

I'll sometimes do a teaching game without commanders if I think it'll be too complicated for the student. Depends upon who is learning of course.

I'd run demos without them. Makes life simple explaining the movement and shooting without adding even MORE rules to comprehend.

You need a Flagship in every fleet, a ship is designated a Flagship on the basis of having a Commander upgrade, therefore you need a Commander in every fleet. There is absolutely nothing left up to interpretation on the matter, players simply just need to be willing to read the rules.

They did FAQ that combo.

They don't need to FAQ commanders. Rules say you need a flagship. They only way to get a flagship is to assign the ship a commander.

I don't get the confusion over XI7/Advanced Projector.

The first time this came up, it only took maybe 2-3 minutes of discussion and a firm grasp of the English language to work out that it can redirect one damage to each of three hull zones.

Maybe he just wants big bold text?

God dammit, I knew it. There was nothing under the entry for Commander, though.

That's the problem with the rules. In this encyclopedia you can't find anything, unless you know already what to search for.

Rules have to be systematic.

Flagship is a keyword. If you look under the Commander section, what are the related topics there? Was your question answered? If not check one of those related topics.

Seems like a system to me
