How usefull is SLAM in the K-wing?

By Kiwi Rat, in X-Wing

Just bought my first K-wing today, and read the rule for SLAM.

And I can hardly see what use it has when you can't use any weapons, when you use this action.

So how usefull is SLAM in the K-wing? In which situation besides running away from someone is SLAM usefull?

Well Advanced Slam lets you drop a mine in like ten thousand potential places. So that's cool.

But that's a lot of effort to go to to put one guaranteed damage on one ship (Conner Net) or hope the red dice are good (Cluster Mines and Prox).

Beyond that, I don't have enough playtime vs actual opponents since the no-Bomb ruling to grasp it's broader value. Experimentation required...

It's useful for those times when you need to cover a lot of distance. The value of dropping a conner net at the right time should not be underestimated, either- 1 garunteed damage, the loss of the perform actions phase, and being stuck with a white 1-straight next turn can ruin a critical ship.like Soontir Fel, Corran Horn, or a Phantom caught at the wrong time.

It depends on the type of K-wing.

With the named Kwing, it is a defensive tool. Sacrifice attacking in order to take less/no damage or for better positioning on following turns.

For example I was in a match where it was Miranda vs Whisper. We were across the board from each other and since I knew jousting wouldn't be favorable, I slammed right in his face causing him to over shoot. In the following turns, Miranda w/ engine was able to arc dodge in the knife fight.

For the PS2 Kwing with mines and adv SLAM. It is much more of an offensive tool allowing you to more easily drop a bomb in someone's face.

I've also used it to get Miranda into the fight with the quickness when I didn't have initiative (or just placed my ships poorly) and I'm still surprised at how much of the board she can cover.

With aSlam it is an unparralled bomber (mine layer)

With Miranda it's A great dodge to set up for future turns

For the opening turns it's and ultra boost/roll to set up approaches and snake around obstacles

Amazing for whoring mov

Use with int agent, piss the **** out of your friends

Ito worth of the k, you bring a warden with mines or Miranda with tlt

Warden with just tlt is a stupidly inefficient gold with or without slam

Wait. Engine upgrade on a K? Hmm...

SLAM is useful for blocking, for bombing, and for denying shots to your opponent. A K-wing never has to engage unless it wants to, because it can always run faster and maneuver more sharply than almost anything trying to shoot it.

It's pretty solid for Miranda to get out of arcs. Sometimes it's worth giving up the shot.

Warden does not care what lesser bombers think

Warden Schmorden. Hired Gun with Bomb Loadout, Genius is where it's at.

Not as useful as it would be if they FAQ'd how bombs work to work like they did in the article instead of how they actually work.

But Adv.SLAM is bloody fantastic.

Advanced slam makes the Warden the best bomber in the game, in my opinion. It becomes an absolute beast of a blocker, setting up a bomb for its next round, and can get out of arcs very nicely too, with what is essentially a white t-turn. It's also a heap of fun! If it wasn't for it's pretty serious weakness to the very weapon it comes supplied with (tlt) it would be **** mean, I think. Warden with prox, conner and adv. slam is a great and affordable ship that can be a right pain to play against. Unless you're spamming tlt, that is...

It makes my blackened imperial heart beat fast - in fact it's the only rebelscum ship that makes me consider betraying the empire! :D

Fly fugly, my friends, fly fugly.

Deathrain gets close to the Glory of the warden

Not quite there, but close :)

Best use by far is when you are getting into a joust situation. Pick a 3 forward then slam a 3 bank and get behind them. Much better than being stuck in front of a few ships with your 1 defense die. And I know I know, you shouldn't joust with a K wing. Well sometimes that's better than letting them tail you and plink away. Especially if it means them K turning to chase your Kwing or fighting the rest of your list in front of them.

I can see that the K-wing can drop bombs, do you drop them before you move or do you drop them in the attack/combat phase?

Neither, actually. The K-wing really only excels at dropping mines (Conner net, Cluster mine, proximity mine). What the K-wing does is it takes Advanced Slam modification and when it performs a maneuver it then Slams as an action in whichever direction it's dial and the speed of the first maneuver says. After it does this, as long as it has Advanced Slam it can drop one of the three mines mentioned above as an extra action. The Slam action helps to direct where this drop ends up.

So you drop it at the end of your activation phase either as your action or as a free action after Slamming while having Advanced Slam.

It's incredible in fact. More importantly than anything, it's the outmaneuvering/repositioning ability of SLAM.

Engine is great with any turret, but it was especially good with Miranda and TLT.

Adv Slamming with Leebo crew.

Crazy.

I bought three K-wings and have been using two as dedicated bombers with the third as a missile/TLT carrier escort. So far SLAM has been used sparingly and Advanced Slam hasn't been used due to lack of points. The list is fun to use, seismic charges and conner nets everywhere. Even the standard turret is useful.

It's also neat to be able to arc dodge a list - and grab a target lock, setting up a TL + Focus attack for the following turn.

Miranda with Navigator is almost arc-dodgie, and it directly effects what your SLAM move will be. You can go from a 1- or 3-bank to a 2-bank, and then do a 2-turn Slam if need be. Since you cannot attack after, it is a purrly defensive move. I lso use Nav. to get ordinance in proper range a lot.
