So here's my character death story. Feel free to share yours or comment on mine.
AoR game, starting on Onderron. Everyone else is playing rebel badass' who have been working together for a while.
I want to play a Marshal, and the GM and I come up with the idea of a security officer, Captain of a local station, in the alien slums.. who's secretly running the local rebel cell. Letting Rebels get away, while primarily busting slavers and spice dealers, to keep the Empire satisfied.
The idea is I can provide the GM info dump for Onderron when the players arrive, and give them contacts and the like to avoid plot dead ends.
The twist he did not tell me, was that my "by the book" 2nd in command and my IMPERIAL TIE PILOT wife, had slowly pieced together I had been helping the rebels. My partner threw me a curveball and the PCs starting gear got confiscated. Then I go home and my wife asks me to turn myself in. I say no, she says I won't shoot her.. she says she's gonna pull out binders and bring me to the admiral she works for and he will make sure I get off easy. As she slowly moves her hand to her belt where the binders are (also her blaster mind you) I quickdraw mine and drop her with it set on stun.
I flee with the rebels and we do starting game shennanigans.
As we are wrapping up the planet and getting ready to leave, I tell the party, that we have to go back to the capitol and fake my death. I'm worried my wife will suffer if the Empire decides to leverage her against me. (They weren't on board till I told them we could also get their starting gear)
Here was the plan. I had been disguising myself to go do rebel activity, so even my fellow rebels on planet didn't know I was a space cop. I got the craziest member of our party to dress up as "Lightning" (my rebel ego) and I went to the press as space cop.. and said I was going to clear my name, by arresting the rebel terrorist. We staged a chase scene through town and ended up on a garbage reclamation facility.
What was supposed to happen was after an epic duel on the glass roof of the facility, I would get shot (flesh wound ideally) and fall through the glass. There was a series of conveyer belts and we had put piles of refuse on them with lots of chains so I had an easy job of catching them. Our allies had started fires so that the imperials and circling reporters wouldn't directly see my fate thru the smoke. After I catched myself I would make my way out and we had another body all set to fall into the reclamation facility so there would be biological material for any investigation.
Keep in mind I haven't actually failed a single roll for 4 game sessions. My dice are on fire.
All the checks I made to live were some of my best statted.
I failed 3 rolls to catch conveyer belts. Failed two rolls to keep from sliding down the pile of refuse into the "smashers". The "Smashers" (think garbage compacters, but they squash you 3 different ways on your way down, to make a cube) cause 3 pretty bad crits, after failing 4 rolls to crawl to a safe ledge, and drop me down into the "flattening" room. Where I fail 2 ranged light rolls to shoot the machinery components.
I am crushed and then incinerated. No one has ever faked their death more effectively. Amusingly I became a hero to the Empire.
I rolled up his wife as a pilot rigger whom can't let her husband go and gets branded the actual traitor who framed her husband.. when she is seen demanding answers from the rebels on why her husband would choose this life. I loved her and she is my fave Star Wars character to date. We played for a good 9 months and she eventually killed the Moff of the planet.. betrayed the rebels and joined up with the remnants of Deathwatch in the epilogue! Thanks for a great game Matt!
