DAT HATE...

By Joe Boss Red Seven, in X-Wing

The Golden Age of Star Wars was between the years 1980 and ended in the May of 1999...

Ugh.

This alone has almost killed my love of Star Wars, you can't talk about it before people bring this up, no wonder why G.L. sold it. It borders on some sort of mania the hate does. It is time to adapt or go and sit in the cave alone while the rest of us just enjoy Star Wars.

Right? It's ridiculous.

Like.

Seriously, it's been over a decade.

Yeah, and those movies are still terrible. The weird thing is that the Tartakovsky Clone Wars out of Attack of the Clones, and that was actually really decent. The problem was that the bad stuff was even drekkier than some (not all) of the worst parts of the EU.

Face it, the OT/PT and the EU/Movie broken bases/fan dumb/etc... will exist for decades to come, and no one is going to adapt any more than many of the Trekkies have adapted to the JJ reboot. You guys like the upcoming stuff and GL's personal travesty, that's fine, but the prequels still sucked and there's never gonna be another ESB coming out of the Star Wars franchise. Disney'll never let them do anything that risky.

I'm not sure what's worse, guys who complain about everything new that's Star Wars, or everything new that's Star Trek.

But, the worst part is how every single one of them states their opinion as fact. That truly is the worst part.

In this case I think the idiom "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth." is appropriate. I wanted more Star Wars, craved it - new enemies, new planets, new aliens, lightsaber duels, intense space battles, new science fiction and G.L. provided; in this I was not disappointed. Yes there were some things that haven't aged well and some of the dialogue/characters aren't as good as the OT (this has been happening to cinema for years not just SW), but I choose to look past it and enjoy them as much as the other films.

REMEMBER THE PREQUELS!!!

Haters gonna hate.

@Warsmith: Yeah, films as a whole have migrated towards the safe and formulaic. More often than not it's the actors playing off of one another that makes a film worth watching rather than the plot or cinematography.

Also, to be fair to us haters... most of the "facts" stated are exercises in hyperbole. While I'm not a fan of the direction I see Disney going in overall and am concerned with the quality, they did retcon women stormtroopers into existence. Prior to this we just had EU writers having to come up with an explanation for the blatant sexism that pervaded the OT. We also have greater minority representation in the new canon (LGBT characters, for example), which is a great step forward.

Would much rather have had a 26 episode version of that TIE Fighter fan film than Rebels though... TV-14 Star Wars animation ftw...

Yeah, right! All in all, we got a lot of worthwhile content, I think.

One could discuss the intricacies of the Clone Wars for hours. "Since everything is just a mass produced copy in this war, is anyone really lost?" "What's the point of a war orchestrated by one man playing two roles?" (the answer to two, is galactic destabilization, so that an empire can be set up.)

Really there are some neat things one could ask about the events of The prequels. Yeah there was hamhanded acting, writing, and even some just... God awful scenes.

"Here padme let me f**king feed you with the force"

I didn't need that. I never needed that. I never asked for this.

But I can overlook that, to see the stories about the Grand Army of The Republic, their clone troopers that struggle to have an identity, even though they all share the exact same templates. The occasional, "Maybe the CIS was right" blurb, which certainly has some credence to it. So on, so forth.

Seems like a lot of this stuff gets overlooked so people can just drone on about Jar Jar or something.

Alright. Fair. Though Rebels is good and getting better, and you're absolutely right, the increasing diversity in Star Wars is excellent. Notably due to the fact that, for the love of god, they're in space. Diversity and broader liberties are utterly unavoidable in a massive environment filled to the brim with Aliens and such.

I really don't mind female stormtroopers being retconned into existence. It doesn't really hurt the lore of The Empire- I would argue even, that stormtrooper equality actually makes The Empire a better character/faction overall. Rather than being a male-led human Empire, it's simply a human empire. A home for those untrusting of aliens and such. A faction where you're going to be comfortable, if you prefer human company. The Empire being humanocentric rather than simply dudeocentric, not only allows for more human interaction in The Empire to occur...

But it makes them that much more xenophobic looking. Which is friggin' perfect. It illustrates both good and bad sides of The Empire, as it should.

Augh.

I love what these guys are doing.

I saw Star Wars in the Summer of 77 with my Father. (Theater 1 at Studio 28. I will never forget. Same with the whole OT, theater 1.) After that I have been in love with Star Wars.

Now as a Father I am enjoying Star Wars even more as I watch his love for Star Wars grow too. We sit together and watch Rebels on the couch and afterwards play Star Wars Legos.

But what gets me the most is not Jar Jar or even Hayden, nope it's all those people who claim to be Fans and yet can't let go of the fact that Star Wars will never touch that amazing level again. And the main reason it won't is not because of Disney or any of that, it's because you are not 10 anymore. You are a jaded adult that doesn't realize that the main reason the OT was sooooo good was because as a child it is magical and the movie was way ahead of its time. But we can't go back to being 10 again and either you can learn to like Star Wars for what it is or you can be a Jaded old man and Hate on everything new because it is not like it was when you were 10.

I myself am going to enjoy these next several movies because my son is at that magical age and he will always remember seeing these films in the theater with his dad.

Man.

That is the best way to put it.

When anyone complains about how bad the prequels are, all I can do is think of the Star Wars Christmas Special.

If you haven't seen it I highly recommend it so that you see how far rock bottom is, because we climbed out of it long before 1999.

Here is the Nostalgia Critics review, it is horrifyingly hilarious ->

This is why George Lucas became an intellectual property tyrant, people signing off on things that should never have existed.......

Sure some of the prequel stuff was pretty darn bad. But tbh I'm feeling a lot better with Disney at the helm than I would with George Lucas there!

I'm going to come out and say something that I've been hiding for along time, I've kept quiet for fear of backlash but that leads to the dark side! Ok I really liked Revenge of the Sith, it wasn't the OT but it did enough that I felt a spark of the 10 year old me that Beatty was talking about.

When considering tPM and AotC you just have to use a bit of head canon to make it fit, just like you do with the EU stuff. Personally I feel that erasing the Gunguns from Menace pretty much fixes it for me. AotC is a little more mental work but I've managed to erase most of the bad dialogue from conscious thought and I'm having counselling about the repressed stuff!

I have to agree that the Gungans aren't among my favored aliens (although I still love the way the droid army deployed against them) but what about the Zabrak Darth Maul? Easily one of the coolest bad guys on screen so far, the fight choreography was really stepped up from the OT.

He had no personality one line of speech and an idiotic death, sure the athletic moves were well done but there was no soul to his duel no subtext going on between the characters it was all show and no substance like every other lightsaber duel in the prequels.

Dude.

What does my one say?

My reaction was a bit more like: "WAT? That's not a proper lightsaber, son!"

Even as a teenager i was a bit of traditionalist ;)

When talking about golden ages and whatnot, I always remember the Dark Age of Star Wars, being the mid and late 80s. After ROTJ (which was bit of a letdown even for a seven year old) we had a few last gasps of toy merch, a couple of Ewok movies on TV and two cartoons that didn't last more than o e or two seasons each. Other than WEG putting out RPG stuff to a niche group of gamers and the winding down of the original Marvel Comic it looked like Star Wars was truly over and done, forever. Even when the Thrawn Trilogy started and the old novelizations were reprinted it didn't seem like anything was on the horizon except some renewed interest in an almost forgotten series of films. Before the mid 90s when figures and such returned with a vengeance and SotE became he movie that wasn't a movie there were some very dark times when Star Wars really was all but dead. I will never forget that.

So when people cry about the prequels (and I will admit that when AotC was released I didn't even bother seeing it in theaters...a SW movie in theaters and I didn't even care to see it...sad) please remember or at least be aware of the Dark Age when there was no future, no prequels or sequels, no awesome computer sims or tons of video games, no figures, no toys, no miniature game that is not a toy. The last 20 years or so has given us an embarrassment of riches, and it's only going to get better. Yes TESB is never gonna happen again, but then, I don't want it to happen. I want TFA to happen. I want Ep 8 and 9 to happen. I want Rogue One and all the other side movies to happen. Who knows what we will get, but info know that SW is really awesome right now and I don't want to ever see another Dark Age again. The OT gave us some awesome AWESOME stuff, but it lead to the worst time ever for SW. Not even the PT can be said to have done that.

I REMEMBER! That is why I love what FFG and Dat Mouse are doing now... it really is great.

:D

It would have been fine if in the 136 minutes of running time they had swapped out the gungans for more Maul exposition. I actually would have preferred the droid army deployed against the Royal Naboo Security Forces and swap the gungan/anakin exposition time for more Sidious-Maul interaction. It didn't happen except it did in my
