So I've been coming up with a couple of new Infinities (What if? stories) storylines for campaigns but I'm having trouble with where I should take them, could I get some feedback?
Episode I Infinities: Obi-Wan makes it a few steps farther ahead so he and Qui-Gon fight Maul together. Sifo-Dyas lives as Qui-Gon goes with him when he visits Dooku and becomes a party member of sorts (he’s a master to one of the characters like Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan).
Net effect: Qui-Gon lives
Story Questions: Should Qui-Gon or Obi-Wan kill Maul? Should Obi-Wan die instead? Should Qui-Gon be kicked out of the Jedi Order? Would Qui-Gon join Dooku (not as a Sith but as a genuine protest against the decadence and corruption of the Republic).
Episode II Infinities: Padmé’s ship explodes in flight and destroys the Senate building, killing senate members and Palpatine. Anakin seeks out Padmé to see if she lives.
Net effect: Palpatine is dead.
Story Questions: What becomes of the government? What are Dooku’s machinations? Jedi’s role? Anakin and Padmé? Luke and Leia born sooner? The Clone Army? Zam Wessel?
Episode III Infinities: C-3PO spots Obi-Wan trying to board Padmé’s ship. Padmé confronts and berates him for attempting to use her to get at Anakin. She says if he wants to blame someone blame Palpatine. Obi-Wan joins the Yoda’s fight against Palpatine towards the end and stabs the Emperor through the heart. Palpatine manages to hit him with lightning before falling from the Senate pod. His death throws dislodge the remaining Senate pods and Yoda must lift Obi-Wan swiftly to safety. Anakin feels Palpatine’s death but Padmé, disenchanted with both the Jedi and the Republic, convinces Anakin to run away with her and raise their children in seclusion.
Net Effect: Palpatine’s death.
Story Questions: Does Obi-Wan live? Is he in a coma (from being hit with lightning and perhaps thrown against a wall)? Who takes over the Empire? Tarkin? Maul? What Jedi live? Does the new Emperor have Jedi Hunters? Did Mace survive the fall (Maul survived being bisected after all)? What of Anakin and Padmé’s ultimate fate? Does Anakin redeem himself? Do visions plague him?
Episode VI Infinities: Han stalls longer over the Death Star intercom (think of the scene from Robot Chicken) and they are able to escape with Leia off the detention block along with not raising suspicions. The snag Obi-Wan before he confronts Darth Vader and flee the Death Star. Obi-Wan disables the tracking device on the Millenium Falcon. Leia, in order to draw the Death Star out, has Luke contact Han (who’s left with his money) to return so as to leak their location. Han returns only to realize that Leia used him and Luke and is angry with her. The pilots are ready for the Death Star before it arrives and suffer minimal losses.
Net effect: Han dislikes Leia, feeling she is a cold-hearted manipulator. Biggs and Obi-Wan live.
Story Questions: Does Obi-Wan continue to train Luke, or does he send Luke off? Is Leia trained? Should Leia begin to like Biggs? What is Biggs role in this new story? How does the Rebellion grow with a Jedi Master and a stunning victory over the Empire? Did Darth die in the Death Star?
Episode V Infinities: Luke hears Leia shout “It’s a Trap!” on Cloud City and decides on a different path. He tracks down Boba Fett and engages him in a fight.
Net effect: No fight with Vader
Story Questions: What should the fight with Boba be like? Like Obi-Wan and Jango? Does Leia arrive in time to save Han (I’m leaning no)? How do they track Boba? What major story consequences would there be? Does Luke get in a full additional year of training with Yoda? Does Yoda tell Luke about Vader being his father?
Episode VI Infinities: Leia realizes Jabba has set a trap and manages to spring it and escape with Han. Luke is able to return to Yoda a few days sooner and Yoda teaches him one last technique before dying. When Luke confronts the Emperor he is ready for his lightning and redirects it back at him (think Zuko vs. Fire Lord Ozai from Avatar). The Emperor is seemingly defeated (or at least unconscious) so Luke attempts to leave with Vader. The Emperor shoots one last bolt of lightning but Vader places himself in the way before throwing the Emperor out the window. Damaged but not dead, Luke is forced to remove Vader’s failing mask and hook him up to the life-support on the Imperial Shuttle.
Net effect: Vader lives.
Story Questions: What kind of story consequences would this have? Should the Emperor actually die (or does Vader simply place himself in the way of the lightning)? What becomes of Vader? Is he imprisoned or does Luke manage to get him free (via smuggling him out or pulling privilege)? What of Leia’s reaction? Should anything more happen at Jabba’s? Does Darth’s knowledge of Jedi help Luke establish his order sooner? What of the still standing Jedi temple?
