Canon or Not: A List of All Xwing Ships That Are Currently Canon

By Cesamasec, in X-Wing

Xwing is a great game, and it draws people from many different perspectives. I personally got into it because I am a huge Star Wars nut and will buy it if it says Star Wars on it. Some people however only really like their Star Wars to be from the Original Trilogy and their favorite books, comics, and video games. When Xwing first came out, it was a funky time for the Expanded Universe; There was at one point six different levels of canon, ranked in a tier system. So when making the game, Fantasy Flight Games had to pick the best recognized ships. But when the Disney deal happened and the old canon was superseded by the new, many ships were put into a grey area. So I thought I would make a list of every ship in the game and whether it is in the new canon or not. So here goes:

Wave 1

Xwing - Canon Appears in: Original Trilogy

Ywing - Canon Appears in: Original Trilogy + Clone Wars

Tie Fighter - Canon Appears in: Original Trilogy

Tie Advanced - Canon Appears in: Original Trilogy

Wave 2

Awing - Canon Appears in: Original Trilogy + Rebels

YT-1300 - Canon Appears in: Original Trilogy

Tie Interceptor - Canon Appears in: Original Trilogy

Firespray-31 - Canon Appears in: Original Trilogy + Prequel Trilogy + Clone Wars

Wave 3

Bwing - Canon Appears in: Original Trilogy

HWK-290 - Canon Appears in: Star Wars Commander http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/HWK-290/Canon

Tie Bomber - Canon Appears in: Original Trilogy

Lambda Shuttle - Canon Appears in: Original Trilogy

Wave 4

Ewing - Non-Canon

Z-95 Headhunter - Canon Appears in: Clone Wars

Tie Defender - Canon Appears in: Star Wars Commander http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/TIE/D_Defender/Canon

Tie Phantom - Non-Canon

Wave 5

YT-2400 - Canon*

(The Outrider is seen in the background of the special edition of A New Hope, but does not appear anywhere else. Also, wookieepedia does not have a canon page for it, but that could be chalked up to all the pages that need two pages, some may get missed)

VT-49 Decimator - Canon Appears in: Star Wars Commander

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/VT-49_Decimator/Canon

Wave 6

M3-A Scyk - Non-Canon

Starviper - Non-Canon

Aggressor Assault Fighter - Non-Canon

Wave 7

Kwing - Non-Canon

Tie Punisher - Non-Canon

Kihraxz Fighter - Non-Canon

YV-666 - Canon Appears in: Clone Wars

Wave 8

VCX-100 + Attack Shuttle- Canon Appears in: Rebels

Tie Advanced Prototype - Canon Appears in: Rebels

Jumpmaster-5000 - Non-Canon

G-A1 Fighter - Non-Canon

T-70 Xwing - Canon Appears in: The Force Awakens

Tie First Order - Canon Appears in: The Force Awakens

Epic

CR90 Corvette - Canon Appears in: Original Trilogy

GR-75 - Canon Appears in: Original Trilogy

Raider Class Corvette - ??????

(The Raider is hard to place; it does not appear in anything other than Fantasy Flight Games products. On the other hand, it was released in the 'everything is canon' era of publishing. There is no official ruling on this yet, so until it appears in a comic or book it will be left in a state of limbo)

Gozanti - Canon Appears in: Rebels

So there is the list. Every ship, Canon and Non-Canon. I was surprised that the Defender, Decimator, and the HWK were saved by that game app. I think that it's cool that they are going back to the Legends material for ships. It makes sense, and I think that we will still be seeing Legends ships in Xwing for awhile. There are lots of cool ships left to be seen.

I also found it interesting that the Rebels and Imperials only have two ships each that are non-canon*, while Scum only has one non-shared ship that is canon. I can see them possibly saving the Aggressor for IG-88 or the Starviper if they bring Xixor back.

*(If you want to get very technical, the Headhunter model we have does not match the only canon version of the Headhunter that appeared in the Clone Wars, but who is paying attention? Oh wait, I am... :P )

Any thoughts? Insights? I would love to hear your guys' feedback, this was a fun little project.

I expect to see many, many white bars in this thread. Along with unsuspecting people quoting him and foolishly engaging.

Good luck.

LFL was pretty strict about saying that games weren't canon (because of the different possible outcomes). Has there been any official (Wookieepedia is not official) word from Disney on this?

Yes, in the old era of the canon, video games were on a lower level of canon because of multiple endings. There was usually always a 'canon' ending though. Revan ending up on the light side for example. However, now with the Disney era of canon, they are going by 'everything is canon' so a comic or book or app has the same amount of weight as a movie. This will definitely make things less confusing, however they will need to work very hard to make sure that things do not conflict.

More official ships than I thought! Neat idea, thanks for putting it together.

TIE Phantoms appears in Rebel Assault. Also the YT-2400 appears in Shadows of the Empire.

Interesting read. I imagine we'll see the other bounty hunter ships eventually. The StarViper and Kihraxz might never be saved, though. The StarViper was invented for the specific purpose of giving the Shadows of the Empire villain a cool new ship, and I have a feeling that the new story group won't retread old stories like SotE. Meanwhile, the Kihraxz might have a little better shot at revival if there's a specific need for it in a game (which is why the Decimator was used in SW Commander, probably) but there are other, more pronounceable small pirate ships they could draw on instead.

Oh, the YT-1300 is in The Force Awakens, too, BTW.

If you say the Raider might be canon because it appears in this game, at this time, then all other ships by the same reasoning will be canon as well.

The reason I thought the Raider could possibly be canon is the fact that FFG worked with LFL to create it. It is totally new and original, whereas other ships are drawn from other forms of media. Also the Raider came out when everything is canon. It will be a good way to set a precedent for other possible miniature games and such, as to whether they will be considered canon or not.

I find it really weird that George Lucas created Shadows of the Empire, designed it as a part of a multimedia storytelling... thing, where the full story would unfold over the book, comic and game. It was considered- at the time- to be as canon as any of the movies. Even more canon than the Expanded Universe books.

And yet here we are. It's no longer canon. Oh well.

When asked, Fantasy Flight is certain that the Raider is 100% canon. I think it's possible that (say) Filoni might not know it exists and could be used in Rebels. I'm not sure who would suggest it to him if he doesn't know. But yes: The Raider is canon.

Frankly, everything FFG's mentioned in XWMG is canon.

Least, that's the way I see it.

Does it even matter if it's canon or not? If you like something you can still read the stories or play the video games (exception of Galaxies). It's not like they disappeared like a family portrait in Back to the Future.

X-Wing Products have the Disney logo on them. So you tell me, guys.

I dunno, they kinda disappeared the Thrawn family portrait.

I bet that Thrawn will show up again. *cough*Aftermath*cough*

Fantasy Flight Games is thrilled to bring you the all-new Raider-class corvette, a new Imperial ship for X-Wing Epic Play and a new addition to the Star Wars galaxy!

Designed in partnership with Lucasfilm Ltd. for use within the game’s Cinematic Play and Epic Play formats, the Raider-class corvette is the highlight of the upcoming Imperial Raider Expansion Pack.

I always found it weird, the way people obsess over establishing continuity with Star Wars, trying to find the definitive Canon.

I think most all of the ships are pretty cool, the ones in the game.

I'll shoot him a quick e*mail and see what we can do!

j/k ;)

Also the Raider came out when everything is canon.

So too the K-Wing and TIE Punisher for instance.

Those are Legends, i.e. non-canon, sources.

Shadows of the empire is a fan favorite they (Disney) would be mad to through it out

A lot of things are fan favorites - that doesn't guarantee that they will recanonize them. SoTE was automatically decanonized with the Legends announcement.

That said, it may not be especially difficult to recanonize - if it can be fitted in before Moving Target.

I pretty much found Shadows of the Empire pretty bad and massively boring. It didn't feel at all like Star Wars and I hated introducing a "Not Han" as a major character.

Within a few years this new canon will be so bloated and internally conflicting that some kind of hierarchy is needed to make sense of it.

Boussh was a nice touch though.
