X-Wing ships in kit form...

By Dust Bunny 01, in X-Wing

Esteemed pilots, and fellow rogues,

A vast majority of X-Wing players refinish their ships with new paint schemes.

Wouldn't it be a lot simpler if FFG offered their ships in kit form, much like Dust Studios is starting to now do with their Dust Tactics/Warfare models?

Since X-Wing ships are fairly small, painting them on the plastic sprue would certainly make it simpler before assembly, particularly with Tie Fighters.

Just a thought. Comments/criticisms? :)

That would indeed make me a happy camper!

I'm not sure where you see this. I see quite a few repaints here but where I play I don't personally see any. One of the reasons I got into X-Wing was because of the pre-painted models.

Sorry but I have zero interest in unpainted models and would not get them.

I think it would be a bad move. While I enjoy painting my ships, and many other's do as well, there's also allot of the player base that got into this game because of the pre painted minis.

Won't happen. FFG has a license to produce pre-assembled and painted gaming pieces. They do not have a license to produce model kits. Another company (AMT/ERTL) holds that license.

See all the issues with Hasbro and Imperial Assault being a "Board Game" for why this will never happen.

Ain't nobody got time for that.

I love that the models are prepainted, Its not like the paintjobs aren't excellent as it is.

Pieces on the sprues? Lets add sanding and glueing to the list of stuff not getting done.

Yeah, I think you've got an incorrect impression on the number of repaints. This forum is most likely not representative of the wider X-Wing community.

This is also my experience. 100% agree. I love that the ships come ready to play and look great out of the box.

I plan to have all my Scum ships repainted because I hate seeing them in uniform colour (M3As and Kihraxz excepted), but other than that I don't see myself doing anything other than a drybrush highlight on my Imperials.

I'd paint up some Rebels if I start playing them, but they look fine IMO. Except the engine on the YT-2400. Good lord.

You are delusional if you really believe that. It's not UNCOMMON, but it's nowhere near a majority, much less a vast one.

I'd never have gotten into this game if I had to paint the toys myself. O have 24hrs in my day, and I would rather do dishes than glue plastic together.

Part of that- I know- is the certain knowledge that I'd screw it up and have spent money on something that goes right into the recycling bin.

not really...most just like the game...it seems like it's a "majority" but I would guss it's about 20% to 30% of the population

Maybe 20-30% of this forum. But how many kids out there own at least a few X-Wings/TIE Fighters and haven't painted a **** thing?

*Raises Hand*

I've got enough miniatures that I have to paint that I'm not going to spend any time on ones that are already painted.

If that was the only option I wouldn't be happy. But maybe as an option it would be good.

I think FFG's strategy is really sound as a counterpoint to e.g. Games Workshop's models - I turned a 40k player onto X-Wing just yesterday simply by pointing out that 1) no painting/assembly was required and 2) a Standard game's worth of models was a fraction of the cost of a 40k army. He dropped like $100 on the spot at our local FLGS, sat down to play his first game with me, and was super stoked on the whole experience.

On the other hand, it WOULD be cool to see some 'terrain' modeling stuff - turbolaser turrets, asteroids, debris, derelict ships, whatever. Maybe that would get around the licensing issues mentioned above?

There are plenty of people doing those without the need for buying a kit. It's probably less expensive, too.

Echoing what's above. "I don't have time."

Had Imperial Assault come with painted miniatures I'd have been all over it; as is I'm not even going to bother getting into it. X-wing would've been much the same for me was it unpainted.

Just don't love what I've seen so far (other than my Space Rocks asteroids with acrylic bases shaped like the tokens from the first core set, those are whipass).

That and I think it would be cool to see FFG produce some campaign packs or some such that are complemented by terrain features. Like a long, narrow game board with models of pipes and conduits and stuff, and roles for smashing into the walls, for simulating the attack on the second Death Star's reactor. Or maybe just the command tower section of a Star Destroyer to fly around. I dunno, I was just at an Epic tournament a few weekends ago that was part of a larger miniature gaming event and I got jealous of all the sweet 40k terrain and stuff like that.

I would love to have the option for kit form ships. I recognise that there are different schools of thought on this and that pre-painted should be the staple, but pre-painted models were a deterrent to me starting out with X-wing. Every layer of paint obscures more detail. Having the option for clean plastic to start on would be fantastic.

I wouldn't buy any of them. I've said before that one of the great aspects of X-wing as a miniature game is that I don't have to paint my models. The option is currently there for those who wish to paint their models. If the kits became exclusively unpainted many people (I won't say majority) such as myself and all of my friends who play X-wing would be disappointed. The way it is now allows for everyone to do what they want. To change that would cut out part of the customer base. Bad business.

I'd love it if FFG came up with a set of rules for things like turbo laser emplacements and such. They could sell the rulebook, campaign setting and some tokens. Think something like the senator's shuttle. Those templates and tokens would be made and sold with FFG's full understanding that people can and many would replace them with properly ratioed, fully 3D printed fan built models.

Honestly, most of what we might need at this point is a way to generate and allocate energy to hardpoints that are not on ships. And rules for turning the arc on those hardpoints.

From there, we've got several good options for building things like a trench run, or even asteroids seeded with nasty surprises.

Trees, on the other hand, would be a different kind of challenge...

I feel sorry for you, son. I got 99 problems but pre-painted minis ain't one.

Well I'd buy it (if there was a cost reduction). About three quarters of my ships have been/will be repainted, so for the most part that paint job is not value added.
