Poe Dameron Special Ability Question

By Satyrgreen, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hey all, I just picked up the Force Awakens X-Wing Core Set and am loving it.

However, possibly (probably) because of my naivety, I am a bit confused about Poe Dameron's special ability. It reads as follows:

- "While attacking or defending, if you have a focus token, you may change 1 of your focus results to a hit, or evade result."

Am I missing something? Isn't this exactly what a focus token does by default? It allows you to spend it to gain an extra hit or evade?

With his ability, you are not spending the focus to flip one focus die result so you still have the focus for attack/defense. The other difference is a focus token would flip all focus die. Poe's ability only changes one, but you keep the token.

Yeah, nothing on his card says to spend the Focus to activate his effect. So you don't spend it, which means as Darth Emphatic pointed out, you get to keep it for Defense if you only had one <focus> result.

R5-P9 has a new bestie!

Thanks guys. This really helps. It makes perfect sense because it never states to "spend" the focus. All I have to do is have it active.

Got it! :D

SO could he use Calculation at the same time? I have one focus token, I use his ability to change one eye, then spend it to change another.

Yes, since calculation doesnt use focus tokens and only affects one eye result.

Well, Calculation does use a Focus token, but as they are both your abilities you can order them so that Poe goes first.

There is a second golden rule in x-wing that isn't mentioned in the rule book.

Do what the card (and the rules) says - not what it doesn't say.

99 times out of 100 if you stop to take the time to read the rule or the card, the answer will be staring you in the face.

never be afraid to ask tho :)

That should really be the FIRST golden rule, shouldn't it?:)

I'm inclined to agree but the new rulebook has it's own Golden Rule now
