How many of you play for fun?

By SpikeSpiegel, in X-Wing

Really, do you play for fun? Haven't taken a game too seriously since Regionals, I got burned out from competitive mode but I love X-Wing so much that I could never play another competitive event again and still be happy. I still buy all of the new stuff, I still play to win, I still enjoy generic T-65 X-Wings, I still like playing and playing against turrets (even without Autothrusters), I still like Brobots, I still like TIE Swarm, I still like 4K'ing my Defenders to victory... I think you get the idea.

One thing I have noticed in the recent weeks is that there is a rampant increase of "Fix-it" and "New Core Set is doing/going to _____" threads that are popping up. This leads me to assume that a good amount of people are either not having fun with the game or are only looking at the competitive/tournament value of the game, and I've participated a bit in those as well.

I'm just wondering if we're all still having fun with X-Wing. I mean, jousting values and calculating points cost is nice and stuff, but when are you gonna dust off and bust out the X-Wings and TIE Bombers and StarVipers for fun again and not worry about MoV or the brokenness of whatever card cramping your style? Because lately it seems that most of what I'm hearing is grief about something not being playable when in reality everything is playable when it comes to having fun! :D

I have fun playing the game all the time. The day I find the game not-fun is the day my stuff goes up on Ebay.

THIS, all of it, over and over...

It's like, c'mon dudes, we shell out big bucks for a bunch of freaking Micro Machines! They're awesome little toys that (wait for it) you get to play an awesome game with! I wish there was more interest in cinematic play so FFG would put more R&D dollars into campaigns and terrain and all that, y'know? At the end of the day, I'm usually happiest if I got to watch a little Star Wars movie unfold on the table, regardless of whether I won or lost.

I usually play for fun. I get caught up on the competitive stuff at times and get a bit burnt out, but I've recently played some other games in a very non-competitive setting and had a blast. I'm looking at X-wing in a different way now. Not sure if I'll go to another tournament, to be honest. I just like to have a decent time and not stress out.

With that said, I did very well with my Xizor in a competitive setting. I've done well before the Bro Bots with my Tie Bombers, too. So, even when people say they aren't competitive, I've done great with them.

I've never been to a tournament, even though my FLGS is less than 10 blocks away. This is due in part to my family obligations and in part due to the crazy work schedule I keep, but mostly because the super-competitive mindset just doesn't appeal to me.

Don't get me wrong, I like to win as much as the next guy, and I like to browse lists here on the forum to mine for ideas. I'd much rather play a mission and make a thematically-appropriate list and lose, than to stomp somebody with a "cutting-edge" list from the forums. Overly-competitive play is one of the (many) reasons I left 40K.

I actually got into X-Wing because I purchased a few ships to be markers for an old Star Wars RPG.

IS THERE ANY OTHER WAY TO PLAY?!

NOPE!

:D

Don't read too much into Internet forums for any topic. Madness, I say. Honestly I only play the local tournaments for fun. It's a way to play more without burning out the players who aren't into it as much as I. And I suck at it, and yet the fun remains.

:D

THEY DESERVE TO BE MISERABLE... You know... them Meta-Yarblers.

:D

Every game I play is fun

Except for the ones I'm losing :P

Nah that's not so bad. However I will say I don't like games where the victor is decided by the dice. <_< Stars at all the green and red blanks on my side while looking at all the crits hits and evades on my opponent's side.

I mainly play competitively, but win or loose I enjoy every game. There is something about a game that makes a point to continue to evolve and stay fairly balanced that I love. The main mechanics of the game are sound and work perfectly to the theme of Star Wars space combat. I've said it before and I'll say it again I was raised on Star Wars. I was lucky enough to see the original trilogy as they came out (well I had to see "A New Hope" when they put it back in theaters in early 1980 before Empire came out), and had a fair amount of figures, vehicles, and playsets as a kid. As I got older I was able to be part of the EU being born and enjoyed it as others did thinking this was our way of getting more Star Wars. Then the dark times hit.....only to be saved by the Clone Wars Animated Series. Now we are getting new movies, animated series, and novels all of which are no contradicting themselves like most of the EU did. When this game came out I was drawn to it like a moth to a flame....and have never played a single game that I didn't enjoy. I have this weird habit of after a game is over of sitting and taking that 45-75 minute game and processing it into what it would have looked like if it were on screen. Even if I lost that game just to picture in my head how it all would play out in real time is a cool feeling.

Yeah, this thread isn't going to end well.

People have fun in different ways. Don't take the "serious" discussion too serious. It is mainly because we all enjoy the game.

NOT a Meta Yarbler... but a cool Star Brother that likes to take it to the next level. I did that too back in the day. I went to several Games Days in Baltimore, and that was cool in the 90's. I am on board with turnies, just keep it real like Paul H, and other badass Star Bros out there.

:D

I only ever play for fun. I never have, and never will enter any tournament ever....EVER. I just have this feeling the environment would kill the game for me. The big problem is that it would no longer be a game, it would become a competition, just thinking about it puts me off.

I have fun both by the theme and mechanics of the game, but also by the competition. They are far from exclusive and you don't have to completely disregard competitive play in order to be considered playing for "fun." Are there people who take it too seriously/personally? Sure. Who cares? As long as they behave themselves in tourney or league when I play them, I don't care.

Note, this is an entirely separate conversation than about sportsmanship. Graciousness in victory, defeat, and general conduct is something we should all strive for, whether it be at the top tables in a tournament or at a pick-up game at the shop. I generally find when the game isn't fun it's because of the people I'm playing and their juvenile conduct more than anything else.

Always. I don't do tournaments (because there's not enough interest at my FLGS). When I play with friends, we never fly the same list twice, and we purposely avoid the "top-tier" stuff. Meta be damned.

I do both tournaments and play for fun, but I must admit, I've personally found playing against a good friend for fun is still the best for me...I get to try fun things that aren't necessarily in the meta, plus I can actually joke around and have a laugh while playing when its casual play...which I think sometimes is just as important as the miniatures and gameplay itself.

if you are looking for non tournament fun I would recommend the co-op campaign published some weeks ago just search for "co-op campaign" I just got it and am loving it!! They did fantastic work and it is IMO perfect for the non tournament player.

It all comes down the caliber of people my friend. If you have advanced players that want you to be better and enjoy a deeper level of the game, with them, and they help you to do that, now that IS great.

The issues I have is with these know-it-alls that think a new player is an annoying dummy.

Dat ain't cool.

I get why most people (YES MOST) who buy this game stay at home and play at home with their friends and family.

;)

When it stops being fun, I'll stop playing.

X-Wing tournaments are fun too, but time-consuming. Lately I've been generating semi-random squads and just having fun flying everything from one end of the spectrum to the other.

The last tournament I played in was over two years ago, my how time has flown! I mostly play with my son as few others actually play in the immediate area since we moved. So with all that, I play for fun! (But I also play to win, because winning is always more fun!) LOL!

Fortunately at my LGS we don't have many players like that.

However I do remember my (unpleasant) experiences with other Warhammer 40,000 players. I also know as that game starts to lose popularity and as X-wing continues to gain popularity, some of those players who brought those experiences may find their way to X-wing. <_<

As for new players I would say a tournament is likely the last place you want to start. I will say that my first game was at a tournament and I brought Horton and got rightfully destroyed, fortunately for me the environment was still friendly in a competitive setting. I later joined up a league that was a much better place for noobs like me.

It depends. Do you play 100 vs 100?

How much do you enjoy losing 5 games in a row while playing Tie Bombers tie defenders starvipers and old xwings? Oh. You must really like losing. A reminder it takes you about 30 minutes at least to lose if you try.

Or you must be really really much better than your opponent... which is... kind of a nasty ego trip you sick hahaha.

--

I think I had more fun with campaign and some quick house rules to help when my friends wanted to take ships that were obviously not very viable: -1 fix for xwing at least. -3 for generic defenders. etc. That type of thing.

--

The biggest question beg is... do you play 100 vs 100? I mean. If you don't everythings pretty viable plus/minus about 5 points. Interesting how just 5 points changes the game from consistently 25% winrate to near 50% winrate. If that doesn't tell you that this game is balanced very nicely upon a sliver, I don't know what to say to you.

So I really love this. But recently, I've gotten much much better than my friends who have much less time to devote to the game.

What's the best way to try and make it so they have a really good chance at winning while not making it obvious that I'm trying to go a little easy on them?

I ask this because at first I tried to just play "fun" builds against them, like 3 defenders, but even THEN I would win. And I've gone something like 20-0 recently and hey, I want them to win. But they're also proud and don't really understand how/why to get better and they have much less play time than I do.

I absolutely play for fun. 100%. Pew pew pew unless I bonk.

Part of the fun for me is theorycrafting. Talking about what works and why before and after a game. I will actually put myself to sleep thinking about different mechanics to explore in the game.

One of the reasons I tend to not fly X-Wings is that they are kind of boring. Even before Chardaan, A-Wings were a blast to fly in a way that the X-Wing just isn't. The T-70 is so (potentially) trixsy, thought. It might just bring the fun back.

The biggest thrill for me is setting up all this cool stuff, and then playing with it. Playing well is kind of a tertiary enjoyment. But it is _an_ enjoyment.
