New skill check ideas wanted

By dgillette52, in Game Masters

We have been playing star wars since the Edge of the Empire came out a couple years ago on and off. We are in our third campaign and have tried a lot of really cool new ideas. I currently am trying to add some new things that maybe I had missed before and try and have some new checks also. Add a little variety.

Like, we used to make it that every species spoke Basic or you could at least understand. It helped the game flow better, but now we are experienced enough that it adds a really cool element doing those checks to see if you can speak to the person or not.

Any type of checks that you do that use a variety of different skills?

I don't know about variety but I did implement a 'need the skill' rule to some checks. For instance to elevate the usefulness of Knowledge skills, I simply say you need the skill to attempt more than an Easy check. I also require Medicine skill for treating critical injuries.

I'd start throwing it on the players. If they want to add something to the scene, have them choose the skill and make a go of it.

Example: in a cantina, one character might do a knowledge: underworld roll to pick out who may have illicit connections in the establishment. Someone else might make a Warfare roll to pick out the military or ex-military patrons (maybe by noticing a tattoo or particular weapon). One may want to roll skulduggery to see if there are any pick pockets or con artists running a job, while another character might engage Charm for some light banter to find out just about anything.
