Hired Guns: Worth it?

By Stokes52, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

What are everyone's thoughts on the Hired Guns? Useful and effective piece for the Scum, or useless?

Hired Guns

Smuggler

4 points, 2 figures

3 Health, 5 Speed, White Defense, Green Yellow Attack.

Surges:

Surge: +1 damage

Surge: Pierce 1

Surge: +1 Accuracy

Abilities:

Parting Shot: when you have suffered damage equal to your health, before you are defeated, you may interrupt to perform an attack

Disposable: While defending, apply - 1 evades to your defense results

3 health, 5 speed, white defense, green + yellow attack

Some things I notice right off the bat:

With GY attack, their minimum range is 1 and max is 5, BUT every yellow face without any range gets a surge, meaning the minimum range with surge is 2. You have a 56% chance of rolling 3 range without having to use surge. Effective range of these guys is effectively melee reach, anywhere from 1-3 range.

5 speed on a 2 cost figure is really good. Aside from Boba, the scum really really lacks mobility that can also interact.

Disposable : These guys are going to die in a single hit from just about anything, except for a lucky dodge roll.

Parting Shot : Seems incredible at first, until you realize that their effective range is only 1-3 spaces. Stormtroopers shooting at their optimal range should almost never trigger this. The only thing this will work against is melee, honestly.

What do you guys think? Is this the piece scum needs to boost their lists or are these guys truly "disposable"?

Those are the stats for non-elites... The elites may be somewhat better. But still, the number of these guys you can field is amazing. Assuming elites go for 6, you can field 4 regular (16), 2 elites (12), an elite tusken (7) and regular tusken(5). That's 8 act and 16 figures. A whole lot can happen there... Swap boba in for 2 regular HG, 2 elite HG, boba and elite tuskens. They will be a huge boost.

Useful.

Scum needed cheap figures and a lucky dodge or 2 can swing a game.

With 5 speed I can see these being used to run for a terminal you may otherwise ignore.

You need to consider the elite version and the command cards when evaluating these.

I like what I've seen but I know they'll be even better when the rest of the pack has been revealed.

However I don't think they fit with the current set of skirmish maps, they now have to compete against tuskans and the activation rule change cuts into their usefulness.

Are we sure disposable is -1 evade rather than -1 dodge?

Anyway I think they'll be useful (not that I play skirmish) for being 2 dudes with speed 5 for very low cost.

I personally think these guys are the stand out release in this wave.

I think they are what will slow Scum to compete with the other two factions.

They are admittedly no Royal Guard nor do they offer the buffs that an officer does but I am already making plans for them in some lists.

I can honestly see me picking up 6 boxes depending on how the elites turn out 4 will be a certainty.

They have to be dealt with, this is an objective based game and a speed 5 model can get to where they need to be and then your opponent has to contest the objective/terminals often for no gain as the other one is somewhere else on the map.

Sure they are not going to take much hitting but that's a round where someone is not shooting Boba or your Trandos

I'm very much excited for these guys! I may have to buy an extra pack of Wookies and Hired Guns.

I've pre-ordered Wookies, Hired Guns, Leia, and the bounty hunter with the rag on his head. My next priority is to order Hoth.

Not that Parting Shot does not have to target the attacker

Echoing what everyone else is saying:

Does scum currently have a stormtrooper/grunt troop equivalent? No.

Does it want access to one? Yes

Does the Hired Guns expansion pack contain a stormtrooper/grunt troop equivalent? Yes

I LOVE parting shot! As an Imperial, I am so sick of my Stormtroopers getting killed by Jyn before they can get a shot off!

Just out of curiosity, where did you get this information? Has it been spoiled?

Wait, I didn't see that "disposable" ability. Man these guys are easy to kill!

They're CHEAP! I don't expect them to be meatshields. We still haven't seen the elites, but I doubt their advanced ability will be Disposable...er - apply -2 evades! Evades help, but they're not as important as blocks. And if these guys go out, they get a free non-activation attack. So the scenario: Hired gun moves in on Han Solo, attacks, gets one damage. Han activates and attacks, kills hired gun, who can then interrupt to re-attack Han or another figure that is closer. Pretty nice ability, that makes up for the bad evade. It's probably stronger in most situations for a grunt to get a free attack than to hang around another round.

Oh, and if the grunt misses on Han, and he "Return(s) Fire" and kills the grunt, then they get a second chance to hit him! Might just make Han think twice about killing the guy.

So Han shooting first doesn't matter all that much.

WHAT?!?!?

Nice! That may be exactly what the developer's were thinking giving this ability to a Rodian!
