Is there an option to buy the rule books as a PDF

By thackba, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Which they don't.

And rightly they shouldn't be available.

This sort of thing is expensive to compile, let alone produce. Selling pdfs would just give people easier ways of not paying for the product. Not that many don't already do so anyways, but the point still stands.

People can already pirate the books. FFG not making the pdfs hasn't slowed down the pirating of this game in the least. The only real harm that's being done by not being able to do it is that they are losing money from people who would otherwise buy their products legally. PDF's overall are a great thing. I personally enjoy having PDF's (in addition to hard copies) so that I can carry my gaming library with me at all times. I load them up on my tablet and if I find myself having free time away from home I can open one of my gaming books and read to my hearts content.

Also I'm glad that for the most part the days of dragging around heavy ...... heavy ........ heavy bags of gaming books are coming to an end for the most part. It's so much easier on my back to carry a tablet as opposed to having to lug around heavy books.

That's not to say pdf's are for everyone, but they should be available for those who want them. I hope that at some point FFG is able to negotiate something that will let them make pdfs.

I would have liked PDFs.

No PDFs has definitely slowed my adoption of this game. Pretty much all my reading is through electronic media these days.

When it comes to reading, I'm old-school. I want a physical book with pages. Also, they look good on the shelf.

However, for reference, I want the PDF because I can't tell my hardcopy to find all references to "soak" or "prone". The index is OK, but it doesn't show every instance of every word.

So, yes, I typically buy both the physical book and the PDF. Just ask Paizo - I think I put one of their kids through college.

The thing about the No-PDF-contract they have is that for anyone living in Europe buying the books is incredible expensive since the translated versions don't seem to sell enough to keep them in print. If I want to buy all the core rulebooks I have to shell over from 180-200€. And that's just for the Core rulebooks. Any sourcebook clocks in at around 30 to 50€ as well...

So yeah, I would love the option to buy a pdf.

IF I were FFG, I would sit down with some one at EA and work out an agreeable deal to allow them to do the PDFs, it could only Benefit them in the long run for a Limited agreement with EA. IF that is really the only thing blocking it... It wouldn't take a court legal battle.

In all likelihood, they probably already tried to talk to EA about it. Star Wars is a big thing, FFG usually does PDFs, it would only make sense they'd try. Chances are EA either outright said no, or something that was too unfeasible from a business standpoint was the best kind of deal they could get out of EA.

I wonder though, would the dice roller fall under something EA would've had control over? If so, that'd be a clear sign that FFG was able to reach a deal with EA that was at least somewhat reasonable enough to put that out. Obviously not a good enough deal to apply to the PDFs of the game, but still an indication that they've already been in talks with EA at some point.

EA probably asked for an insane amount of money.

No. I'm sure EA was (somewhat) reasonable about money. But they would insist that the rulebooks be broken up. Art is DLC1. Table of Contents and Index are available as DLC2. Searchable? Game of the Year Edition.
