Yet another home made Character Sheet

By kalten, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hi all,

My first post here, so please go easy on me! :)

I've just started running my first game based on the FFG ruleset and am incorporating pretty much all the elements from the 3 editions into one.

As I'm running Morality, Duty and Obligation I needed a character sheet that would track all these as oppossed to simply just one of them.
I also found I was not keen on the default sheet, thus my new project was born: Make a new Character Sheet!

I've done this for other games, so I had a template to go by.

Please see if the following link works for you and take a look at my work.

The sheet is designed so that you print it out on A3 and folder it in half, thus creating a character portfolio booklet.

One note about the front cover design: My guys are all playing Stormtroopers that have a turn of conscious and are turning to the rebellion! :)

This is a OneDrive link - I hope it works: http://1drv.ms/1EOXYdY

Might want to tell people that this is an Excel spreadsheet in .xlsx format, as opposed to a PDF file or something else.

Basically, what it seems that you’ve done here is use an Excel spreadsheet as a kind of electronic graph paper, to create an electronic form that has to be printed out in order to be useful.

For my part, the only reason I’d want to use something like a spreadsheet would be if I could build in the programming necessary to pre-caclulate all the dice pools, or keep track of encumbrance, or do various other things to automate bookkeeping.

Many people here use OggDude’s Character Generator for that kind of thing.

If I wanted a way to represent electronic graph paper so that I could draw out my form using a system of grids, then I’d use an actual drawing program to do that, as opposed to abusing a spreadsheet program to try to approximate that function.

On my platform of choice, there are many different options for drawing programs of this sort, but I have recently found that OmniGraffle does a pretty good job with this sort of thing, because it gives you a variety of aids to help you get things lined up or centered or otherwise looking nice, which most other programs don’t give you.

I would be interested to know what functionality that this provides which you were not getting with the existing character sheets, or the various other solutions that have been detailed in the “Compiled Resources List” thread.

Hi keltan

Welcome to FFG SW RPG, and welcome to the forums!

Thank you for contributing as well.

There is a thread listing various resources that you might find useful as someone new to the system.

Also, a favorite among many here is OggDude's software. If you have access to Windows, check it out.

Your Excel sheet certainly does cover everything!

I find it interesting that you've chosen to combine vehicle and personal stats on the same sheet. To me, it seems like there will be a lot of unused space. If I'm recording a vehicle, then the entire lower part will be empty, but if I'm recording a character, then the upper part will all be blank.

Also, on a personal level, I've gotten very spoiled with having my skills shown as colored shapes representing the die types, instead of numbers.

Hi guys,
Thanks for the replies.
Gotta say Brad, it seems you are being rather negative about my efforts.
In answer to your raised points though:

I didn't think that the sheet being an .xlsx would be an issue, but felt that if people wanted to mess with it and repost it would be easier to give the original sheet for people to play with (if they wanted!)
This is not a form of any kind. It is a character sheet - it is not meant to be used electronically, so the tool used to create it is not important, but I agree, if it was I would use Ogg's character sheet creator anyway! :)
I was not aware of anything like OmniGraffle, as I'd not even bothered to look for anything beyond Excel. Excel seems to do the work I need perfectly fine, and everything lines up perfectly.
As mentioned the main reason for the home made sheet is for the triple of Morality Duty and Obligation all in one. No one else seems to cater to that, or so I've found thus far. If there is anything else, please let me know.

Lifer, thank you for you far more constructive post.
I agree that with the 4 page folio there is a lot of space that seems to be wasted, hence why I placed the vehicle stuff on the back page with the weapons and armour.
It's the page you will view the least, but most of my players have expressed a desire to own a vehicle of some kind, so adding the entry means 1 less piece of paper. Those that want more than 1 vehicle can always use the standard vehicle sheet for the extras.

I did toy with putting in the shapes for the dice, but decided that it would be a bit complex to program the sheet, and I want my players working out their dice pools manually whilst we all learn the system.

I'm more than welcoming of further comments and critics of my work...I will only grow by other people's input :)

Trying not to sound like I'm a starry-eyed fanboy, but OggDude's program has no problem dealing with all three at the same time, even on the same character.

I like Excel sheets as well (though, I admit to having converted to the Dark Oggside, even on my Mac). If you really want to force people to learn the dice, that is fine, but if you want to allow for it in your Excel, you could look at this one that uses VLOOKUP to bring in the symbols really well!

Gotta say Brad, it seems you are being rather negative about my efforts.

It was not my intention to be negative, and I’m sorry if that’s the way it was received.

In answer to your raised points though:

I didn't think that the sheet being an .xlsx would be an issue, but felt that if people wanted to mess with it and repost it would be easier to give the original sheet for people to play with (if they wanted!)

I like to give people access to the original file(s) for the same reasons.

So, that is definitely appreciated!

Ironically, OggDude’s program is also not meant to be used electronically. It is meant to generate the character sheet(s) that can then be printed off and used in physical form.

There are efforts to make it more useful as an actual live electronic character record, for use with Roll20 and other online play mechanisms. But that’s not the primary purpose.

I was not aware of anything like OmniGraffle, as I'd not even bothered to look for anything beyond Excel. Excel seems to do the work I need perfectly fine, and everything lines up perfectly.

So, I’m going to say something here, and I’m sure that you’re going to think that this is negative. But I’m going to say it anyway.

In short, if the only tool you know about is a hammer, then every problem will look like a nail.

I would encourage you to broaden your exposure to other tools, even if you think that the one you know is already perfectly suited to the job you’re trying to do.

As mentioned the main reason for the home made sheet is for the triple of Morality Duty and Obligation all in one. No one else seems to cater to that, or so I've found thus far. If there is anything else, please let me know.

There are definitely other character sheets out there that handle all three types, and they should already be linked in the “Compiled Resources List” thread. If they’re not, then please let us know and we’ll go find them and get them linked in.

Welcome to the forum!

Brad, I checked out OmniGraffle....looks cool.
I'm not sure I would use it enough to warrant the expense, but it does look very cool! :)

I need to go back and take another look at Ogg's stuff...I wasn't aware from my previous trying of it that it could handle the 3 options all in one....so that's my bad for not testing enough.

One thing is that I don't like having the numbers printed out on a sheet - I like the blank sheet to be pencilled in as the players go. I am sure this would be possible too...and if it handles everything else I want I might just scrap this little project...or I might not - and go it solo anyway!

:)

Nothing like creating more work for yourself hey! :)

Thanks for the replies, and be sure I'll be checking out the excel sheet listed by Grayfax - ta for that link! :)

So - I had a bit of inspiration, and I've changed it around a bit....http://1drv.ms/1LrNUV3
This is my daughter's character and I thought I'd change things up a bit and add in the dice working out vlookup.

It's something different :)

You can find the character sheet I made in my sig - it has space for all three. It's designed for A4 paper, though.
