A friend of mine told me that in melee a player can be attacked only once per challenge type. For example if someone attacked me in an Intrigue challenge, the other 2 opponents cannot attack me with an intrigue challenge, because I have been just challenged in Intrigue. The same for the other 2 types of challenge.

Is that true? I ask because I cannot find nothing on the rules of the Core Set...

And if this is true, I think this restriction doesn't apply to Epic Battles card.

No, it is not true. The only restriction is that (barring card effects) each player may only initiate one of each type of challenge in the Challenge phase. There are no restrictions on who or how often someone can be attacked (again, barring card effects). "Gang up on the little guy" is a very common strategy for getting easy power in Melee.
