Fantasy X-Wing Draft

By FisherSpassky, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So, I'm a fantasy sports nerd in addition to being a novice-but-getting-better X-Wing player. Hear me out.

Let's say you have a ten person X-Wing league. Every card (pilot and upgrade) is up for grabs in a draft. (In my version of this pilots are drafted with their respective ships; generics come with as many iterations as you like, but 100 point lists are still in effect.) Which do you take first, and why? What do you think the top ten would look like?

Not the first to have this idea, and I still wanna see it work.

Right on. What do you take with the #1 pick though?

My idea was to have each ship/pilot in the league lists up for the draft, rather than every ship and upgrade available in the game, and assign each one methods available to earn bonus points, similar to how Fantasy Football gives bonus points for yardage thrown by a Quarterback and whatnot.

Which one performs the best therefore depends on A) What's brought to the league, and B) What generates the bonus points.

As such, I have no answer yet for you :D

That's a cool idea too, just more complicated. Let's say all the cards are on the table, you pick first, whatever you don't take the next player has the option to, what do you take?

If everything is considered "unique" I believe #1 pick would go to PTL.

Not because it works well with nearly everyone. But for reasons of Asset Denial.

As for #1 Pilots I'd say Poe Dameron because flavor of the month.

Realistically though anyone in the points cost north of 25pts is capable of being a solid first Pilot depending on playstyle.

I expect Pilots being fairly low for pick choices in favor of upgrades.

Predator would also go quick. Whoever picked PtL first would likely pick Soonitr next if he's still free.

That's a tough one. My strategy would be to get pilots that are highly effective by themselves and get even better with an upgrade or two. Honestly, I might start with Tarn Mison...hoping to draft an R7 Astromech down the line. I am not super familiar with the Fantasy Drafting scenario, but it seems like it could work. I highly doubt others would draft an R7 Astromech for their first card, allowing you to secure it as your second. A Blue Squadron or Dagger might be next on my list with whatever system upgrade wasn't taken (FCS/Accuracy Corrector/Advanced Sensors).

If I was planning a large ship anchor, I would get Engine Upgrade if it wasn't already snagged.

I could also see this 'drafting' deal as a thing that works out similar to how other games are drafted. A handful of pilots/upgrades are put into 'packs' and each player is given three packs. 'Open' the first pack and pick the card you want and pass it to the left...repeat until all cards are gone, then open the next and pass right until all are gone. Different style with it's own 'meta', if you will.

But I really like y'all's idea here.

Problems with this type of draft revolve around factions, too. Here's a thought, though --- remove the faction restriction. You could draft Luke and then Vader, and have them fight side by side. Someone else could pair Scum Boba with Empire Kath (or Empire Boba if you even remove that restriction).

In any event, here's what I would do initially, then look for revisions:

-- 100 point final squads as normal

-- No Faction restrictions

-- All Pilots are considered unique (so once one person gets an Academy Pilot, no one else can draft one)

-- Crew cards are unique

-- Can draft any unique cards (all pilots and crew, unique Astromechs, etc.)

-- 7 round draft

-- All other upgrades available as normal EXCEPT named crew members (i.e., Draft Vader pilot?, no one else can field Vader crew)

Is that a good start? What would you change?

Make your teams from there.

1. Push the limit

2. Predator

3. Veteran Instincts

4. Engine upgrade

5. Twin laser turret

6. Heavy Laser Cannon

7. Autothrusters

8. Fire Control System

9. Soontir Fel

10. Han Solo

1. Howlrunner

2. Academy Pilot

3. Chewey

4. who cares

If I can get Chewey with a TIE mini swarm with Howlrunner, I'd be fairly unstoppable.
