Are Imperials too powerful in skirmish?

By JDragonM32, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

I've only played skirmish as I have no interest in the campaign,Ive played the old star wars miniatures game and various other war games including warmachine/hordes,warhammer and I also play x-wing.

From my experience with skirmish imperial assault, the imperial side always wins.I know darth Vader is currently the strongest followed by Royal guard champion so I've tried a few games without them but the rebels are still losing (note that I don't have twin shadows yet if that makes any difference).imperials can either stock up on stormtroopers meaning they can out number and eventually kill anything whereas rebels don't have this available to them (unless you buy multiple rebel trooper/rebel saboteurs packs),meanwhile if you try to out number the imperials they're strong enough to absorb the damage and still kill the rebels.

I really enjoy this game by the way,but this is a problem for me as I want to go introduce my wife to the game as its something she would enjoy too,but she would always use the rebels,we've had one game in the past and it came down to her ganging up on the stronger characters because lone models couldn't do enough damage on their own,but while she's doing that even the weaker imperials could pick them off one by one and it's kinda put her off the game.she will give the game 1 more chance but I'm concerned that pretty much the same thing will happen.

So I would like to ask you all, from your experiences with the skirmish part of the game,do you feel that the imperial side are too strong? If not then what are your reasons or any thoughts of how to solve this problem

Elite Rebel Saboteurs are some of the best units in the game. Put 2 of them in a squad with Luke and Gideon and you've got a great start to a strong squad. The Elite Rebel Troopers are very good too. In fact, while 4x4 did win the Nationals this year, a Rebel Blast squad made it to the Finals, and beat several Imperial lists along the way. So the Rebels are not down and out. They don't generally give you as much room for mistakes as many Imperial squads do, though.

One difficulty you'll run into when using the heroes from the campaign game is that most of them are too low on Health to really be competitive (Gaarkhan, Diala, Fenn); Gideon is a stand-out exception (he's extremely good). Therefore, my suggestion would be to try to use the non-heroes if you can. Jyn can be good if used properly.

And don't forget the Pass Rule. Basically, if your opponent has more Ready deployment cards than you, you can elect to Pass. Your opponent takes another activation, and then it comes back to you, and if you still have less active Deployment cards then you can pass again, etc etc. So the Imperials are no longer as strong as they once were, since most Imperial squads would pile 4 Imperial Officers into their list so that they could easily out-activate you and attack your pieces after your pieces were all finished for the round. No more of those shenanigans!

Anyway, here are a few Rebel squads you could consider:

This one won the Nordic Championship recently:

10 Luke Skywalker
3 Gideon Argus
3 Mak Eshka'rey
9 Elite Rebel Trooper
7 Elite Rebel Saboteurs
7 Elite Rebel Saboteurs
1 Balance of the Force

This one is commonly known as Rebel Blast, and was the 2nd place squad at GenCon this year:

10 Luke Skywalker

7 Elite Rebel Saboteurs

7 Elite Rebel Saboteurs

5 Rebel Saboteurs

5 Jyn Odan

3 Gideon Argus

3 Mak Eshka'rey

Oh, and I would definitely recommend getting the R2-and-3P0 pack soon. Both of them are excellent pieces. Once you have the droids you can build this squad, which can be a beast (and it lets you use Han and Chewie together!). C-3P0 gives a free Evade, and both Han and Jyn have Cunning, which adds a free block for every Evade they get. And then Chewie gives Protector for another +1 free Block. Meanwhile, both Gideon and C3P0 are each giving out a Focus every round:

15 Chewbacca

12 Han

5 Jyn

3 Gideon

3 R2-D2

2 C-3P0

Rebels are my preferred faction to play, and I think that, with the Droids and with the Pass Rule, they are now pretty close to even with the evil Empire. I hope this at least gives you some options.

The same at german Nationals. 4x4 won the finals against a Rebel Blast list.

Luke

Diala

Balance of the force

After Wave 2 (especially R2-D2 and C3-PO) the Rebels will be able to face the Empire.

Hopefully Wave 2.5 (Hired Guns) will push the Mercenaries into battle as well...

Bring your B Game and throw the match.

Rebels completely dominate our meta here in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Personally I run:

Luke
Gideon
C-3PO
Elite Rebel Troopers
Elite Rebel Saboteurs

Elite Rebel Saboteurs
Rebel High Command

I won the Nordics with:

Luke

Mak
Elite Rebel Troopers

So very similar lists, but as the new waves hit the shelves the meta develops and squads changes :)

Seriously... no rubber bullets for the wife?

Get multiples of the non-unique rebel troops.

Imperials had a huge advantage but it's being quickly cut away.

With twin shadows and the wookies on the way the rebels will soon be on an even footing.

I've noticed one thing in common with most of these lists, they contain multiples of the rebel troopers or saboteurs ally packs.I was only planning to buy one of each ally/villain/expansion pack but I am reconsidering that, especially with the stormtroopers pack coming out (meaning that the imperials have access to 15? Stormtrooper figures just from buying one each of everything) and I want more than one wookie pack anyway(and the wife would have fun using an all wookie list)

4x Wookies / 1x Gaarkhan !!!

The Elite Saboteurs are just great. You absolutely need two of those.

I haven't seen a good list with two units of Rebel Troopers, yet.

Greetings,

Mayby something like this:

Elite Rebel Trooper

Elite Rebel Trooper

Elite Saboteur

Elite Saboteur

Gideon

C-3PO

Balance of The Force

Rebel High Command

If they have all focused (Troopers and 1 squad of Saboter) that they have powerful alpha strike.

My list (at this moment) is:

Biv

Gideon

Mak

C-3PO

Elite Rebel Troopers

Elite Saboteur

Elite Saboteur

2x Elite Rebel Trooper (18)

1x Fenn Signis (9)

1x Luke Skywalker (10)

1x Gideon Argus (3)

I ran that a couple of times and did pretty well. I also did it with 2x Rebel Trooper, 1x Saboteur, 1x Balance of the Force.

I'd like to see that in action ... maybe tonight ?!?

Unless you're going to be around Woodstock, Georgia, probably not. I can't set Vassel running on my system.

Then let's play! I might can tonight, but tomorrow my descent group is meeting.

Ah ok! It's a fun list, lots of focuses early. And if you can get Covering Fire, it can be pretty devastating.

Can't thru the weekend I'm in the middle of moving but meeting someone at Final Dungeon Tuesday at noon.

I believe that my opinion may have been wrong.imperials are too strong if you're just trying to see who can kill all of the opposition, but if you actually play objectives then the rebels can ignore Vader or royal guard champion and possibly still win

Still learning as well, and today I found that the command deck was critical - I chose poorly. What's in your deck?

I'll turn it around and ask you what would you include of Command Cards in such a list? Training towards the Nordics Championship I fine tuned my Command Deck over more than a month and I learned a lot during that time.

So I feel a bit hesitant to just throw up my list of Command Cards, as you don't learn anything from it ;) I'll give you the ones I used for the Nordics list, as I have changed my deck quite a bit since then, as a result of minor change to the list and all the new Command Cards.

Nordics Command Card Deck:

Deflection
Deflection
Element of Surprise
Focus
Grenadier
Lock On
Planning
Recovery
Take Initative
Telekinetic Throw
To the Limit
Urgency
Shadow Ops
Son of Skywalker
Maximum Firepower

Did you ever use Telekinetic Throw or Shadow Ops to any game-changing effect?

Did you ever use Telekinetic Throw or Shadow Ops to any game-changing effect?

Yes to both, but Shadow Ops was really limited. Telekinetic Throw was a nice way to use To the Limit on Luke :)

I can't remember my exact command deck list

My figures were

Gideon

R2D2

Elite Rebel Saboteur

Elite Rebel Saboteur

Saska Teft

Boba Fett

The issue with my command deck is that I took too many character-specific cards. I think the secret to success lies in synergy. You need not only powerful figures, but cards (spies, troopers, etc) that can be used to help you every turn. I found that a lot of turns I had no card to play, yet my Imperial Opponent was playing many cards each turn.
