Judge Question

By CuriousTO, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hey Everyone i have a rules question about tournament play.

If i play a friend in a tournament are we allowed to draw instead of playing?

Thanks

No. The tournament rules list 3 scenarios under "End of Match":

- All of one player's ships are destroyed

- The time limit is reached

- One player concedes, giving the other player the win

There is no option for the players to agree to a draw. In addition, under "Unsportsmanlike Conduct," it says, "Collusion among players to manipulate scoring is expressly forbidden." Now, since a draw only gives each player 1 point, I don't think that it would be very effective collusion, but most people would probably interpret it as collusion regardless.

If you get matched up with a friend, just play the game and have fun with it.

I guess the technical answer is no.

Now if you really do want to draw there is nothing that prevents you from engaging with your opponent. You could both lock your ships into a perpetual fortress lock and then just run on automatic until the clock expired. Some may claim this is against the rules but there's nothing illegal about it.

When all is said and done there is always the question of what good a draw does. When it comes to tournament points the 1 point you get is barely better than a loss.

The rule against collusion prohibits that.

And a concession isn't collusion as well?

Two players don't want to upset their friend so they both decide they want the other to make the first move which neither does. A draw is almost as bad as a loss so what is the big deal?

If you are friends, but playing against each other and someone losing is going to upset them, you need a new hobby.

And maybe new friends lol

From the events I've been to, a LOT of the time people who know each other play (especially if a certain group/gaming team all do well). They don't leave hating each other :P

And yes, a concession would be collusion if both players discussed it and agreed who would concede in certain situations.

And a concession isn't collusion as well?

It can be. I'd say that if you concede at the start of a match, and you don't have a legitimate reason (such as needing to leave the tournament), then that's very likely to be seen as collusion.

On the other hand, I don't think there's a reasonable way to call something like this collusion. Fortressing or flying up and down your starting board edge, waiting for your opponent to make the first move, are both legal tactics. And they don't become illegal just because your opponent adopts the same strategy and both of you stick to it. Since a TO can't prove that the players' motive is anything other than believing that to be the best strategy for winning, it's difficult to justify punishing them for collusion, even if it ends in a draw.

Still...I don't think either player is doing their opponent much of a favor by silently agreeing to a boring, uneventful draw game that could possibly take both of them out of the running for top spots.

Just because it's not feasible to prove that someone is breaking the rules it doesn't mean that they aren't cheating.

As a side note. If it is the first round or before that, let the TO know so maybe he wont pair you up in the first round. But after that swiss will kick in.
