Edge of Darkness IC

By ColonelCommissar, in Star Wars: Age of Rebellion RPG

As the team assembles to enter the prisoner's room, N97 will stay outside the door with the guards, waiting to be called on if needed for the interrogation.

Kixue sighs as Geoff runs off "it's not Black Sun" he says to no one in particular and follows behind the group as they head to the cells.

Nodding at the guards, Geoff puts his back pack down and takes out his medical scanner. "That's good to hear. However, just to be safe, the prisoner needs to be checked out first. I'll go in, preferably with either Oro or N97. Once I get a base line and a good scan, we can move on to questioning. Any comments or concerns?"

"Let's do this." Oro nods at the guard, who opens the door and lets them in. He walks confidently towards Zavvel. "Prayer time is over, the Force or whatever it is you pray to can't help you now." Zavvel opens his eyes and sees Oro. "Remember me? Let me refresh your memory. You gave us orders that were clearly false, tried getting us killed, and then when we survived, you tried to paint us as the bad guys. Well now everyone knows the truth - You're the bad guy."

Oro cracks his knuckles, pacing back and forth in front of Zavvel, the whole time maintaining eye contact with him. "We can do this the easy way or we can do this the hard way. Start talking, or else you'll never smile again without making women and children scream in horror at what's left of your mouth."

(I'd like to perform a Coercion check to try and threaten him into confessing what he was up to and who was behind it.)

With Oro taking the initiative and entering the cell, Liaka deliberately waits outside the cell for now, but listens intently to what is said inside. If Oro wanted to play bad peaceofficer it was good to let him try his way. If he failed she'd enter, giving the alternative, playing the good peaceofficer.

When one of the guard furrows his brow over Oro's opening spiel she gives an apologetic shrug, but does not move for now.

Zavvel opens his eyes. "Good morning. There's no need to be quite so aggressive, I am awake you know. And I never did believe in all that god stuff - it's no match for a good blaster," he grins broadly, toothily - arrogantly. "So it's you. I wondered who they'd send first. Haru never said a word unless he had to, but he's no interrogator anyway. Too soft, you all are really. If I were in charge then you'd know everything by know; as it is you're all too scared of upsetting me to try to learn anything," he leans back against the wall, the most comfortable position he can be in given that his ankles are bound together and his wrists secured behind his back.

"I'll think about answering your questions, but really, what's there to know?" he looks up at the narrow window high above. "And where are we, anyway? We must have come a long way to be this far from the cities or flight paths."

"I bet you'd like to know where you are. Suffice to say you're right in that it's away from the cities and flight paths, and we've got folks sympathetic to our cause. And when I say our cause, I mean OUR cause, not yours." Oro's face cringes just for a split second as he realizes he might have given away too much, and that Zavvel likely had access to intel that identified this town. He may have said too much.

He composes himself, and begins to delve into more specific questions. "Why don't you start with the obvious. Why did you try and frame us? And were you the one who tipped off the Imperials that led us right into that ambush that gave you command of the cell in the first place?"

(So am I doing another Coercion check here?)

Letting the assault specialist in first, Geoff waited for Oro to begin questioning. Better to let him gauge the air first before I move in.

Once Oro began his questions, Geoff walks in, moving towards the smirking prisoner. Too bad I didn't make it a bit more painful for him, Geoff thought as he activates the medical scanner and searches for any anomalies.

[Any Medical checks to see if there is anything wrong with Zavvel?]

"Hey, N97, step forward please?" The droid approaches Oro and Zavvel. "I'm sure you have a blowtorch or hydrospanner or something I can borrow if we need it, right? In case our buddy here needs a little... fixing..." The increased threat is not lost on Zavvel.

N97 moves into the room and stops in front of the prisoner. Bringing his arm up slowly he stops mid-air. In a rapid symmetric motion his hand splits in half, folds back, and a large-bore barrel emerges from his palm. At the same time a rapid clicking sound can be heard coming from his forearm which splits in four sections and slides upward towards his shoulder. Inside is a complex set of tubing, heating elements and mixing compounds in various canisters. At the base is a control dial with a large slowly pulsing red light.

Across his chest the LED starts to flash a warning: "Warning: Industrial tool. Molten adhesive not intended for use on organic flesh. Serious injury and disfigurement likely." A small bit of steam rises from the end of barrel.

Concentrating on the medical scanner and Zavvel, Geoff scowls as N97 shows off the tools and looks at Zavvel. Of all the approaches...

Pursing his lips, Geoff glances at N97, the surgeon holding up the medical scanner. "Do you mind? I'm trying to see if there is any other problems coming before you decide to turn the dear 'Captain' into something that I'll have to fix. Especially since Specialist Haru and I have spent more than a decent amount of time and energy on him."

Hoping that he had gotten the droid to back off for a second, Geoff turns back to his scanner. "I have to admit, though, it was very tempting to have put a bolt in your brain pan," commented Geoff, directing it to Zavvel.

"Ok, there's no need to go that far," Zavvel has a look of deep apprehension as he eyes up the blowtorch being waved before him. In the dark subterranean room, its soft blue light is a focal point for all your eyes. "I don't know you droid, but be sure that I'm not your enemy, not really," the flame sweeps too close to his face and he flinches back in terror, staring at it in horror.

"Alright, yes, I was the one who set up the ambush. I tipped off the Empire that we were hitting the convoy, but I didn't expect anything like that. We were deploying the whole cell - we'd never done that! It was a great opportunity to take out some actual military forces. For months we'd been skulking around stealing supplies, never doing anything of note. We needed to reach out and touch them. I thought we'd just get a couple of platoons of Imperial Army, maybe a company - nothing we couldn't handle. I never expected Stormtroopers! My plan went south the same as everyone else's. I regret that we took losses, but at the end of the day I was trying to achieve something for the cell that no other leader ever had."

Zavvel's resolve seems to have strengthened though - his confession seems to have enlivened him, as he doesn't want to admit that he was wrong in his actions. Gleaning further information will be hard.

Liaka waits patiently, listening to Zavvel speak. As long as Oro keeps getting results she is determined to stay out of the cell, but she is ready to step in and try a new tactic should Zavvel clam up. She holds up her hand when Kiuxe seems about to enter. "Let's stay here a little longer," she whispers. "As long as Oro is getting results without beating him up we should wait. If he starts beating him up we can come in and stop him, playing the good peaceofficer. If Zavvel clams up we can try to get him to talk our way."

The emotions came unbidden as the scum spoke. Anger mixed with disgust, foaming as every painful, stressful, exhausting memory of that night and the following days congealed together. Whether it was the first night after the operation, the horror of being manipulated into an act of terrorism, or the debacle and disillusionment of the assault at the old cell, Geoff won't know. All that he knew was the following.

Gripping the medical scanner in his left hand, his face hardening, Geoff moved in between Zavvel and N97. Before he realizes it, Geoff's right curled into a fist, bring it up and down on Zavvel's face. The resounding crack as his hand met the traitor's nose filled the cell, as did the rage and fury in Geoff's voice.

"YOU GORRAM, DUMB ARSE, MOTHER FRAKING SON OF A BOGGARD! YOU TOLD THE EMPIRE ABOUT THE OPERATION! YOUR ACTIONS NOT ONLY CAUSED THE DEATHS OF DOZENS OF REBELS, BUT THE DEATH OF THE UPPER COMMAND! YOU IDIOT, SCUM SUCKING BOGGARD! YOU HAD THE NERVE TO TELL DOCTOR COHLEN AND THE REST OF THE MEDICAL TEAM TO FIX YOUR WOUNDED WITH OUT YOUR OWN MEDIC'S HELP! I SPENT FOURTEEN HOURS DOING MY DAMNEDEST TO MAKE SURE THAT NOT ONE MORE REBEL DIED ON MY WATCH AND YOU ARE SITTING HERE TELLING US THAT IT WASN'T 'YOUR FAULT'!"

Moving away from the scum, Geoff started slowing down his breathing, a look of rage on his. A glance at Oro brought back the next few events, causing Geoff to turn around. "You didn't think that for five seconds that the Empire wouldn't take the chance to deal a blow to the Cell? You are clearly dumber than you look. Tell me, was the aqueduct mission your idea or did the Empire parade that in front of you as well? What about telling the Empire where the cell was? I found it very hard and unbelievable that the Empire would just find our base after the aqueduct mission."

Shaking his head, Geoff turns to walk out, only stopping at the door. Looking back at the bloodied face, Geoff did his best to give off one last, nasty look. "I'll admit it, I thought you were worth saving, that maybe we could rebuild the cell. Now? I wish I had set that demo charge on your chest, woke you up, and made sure that you watched that timer go down to zero before it sent you straight to Hell."

Exchanging a look between Oro and N97, Geoff stares back at Zavvel. "Leave his ears intact. So that every shriek of every child at seeing his hideousness will be his to cherish. Every babe that weeps at his approach, every woman who cries out, "By the Force! What is that thing," will echo in his perfect ears." Reaching to the handle, Geoff opens the door to rest of the crew outside, then looks over his shoulder.

"Also, neuter him. I don't want there to be any descendants to come after us." Stepping outside, Geoff lets the door shut close. Geoff looks at each rebel before letting out a breath, his shoulder slumping forward.

"Any one have a deathstick?"

Kixue leans against the wall as he listens to the interrogation. And to think they thought he was going to be the bad one.

Zavvel grins; he's barely hazed by the punch. He spits, and looks up at Geoff. "Is that the best you can do tough guy? I've had Kowakian Monkey Lizards hit harder than that," he keeps grinning, looking more smug than afraid. "How the mighty have fallen. How does it feel to have dropped to my level? Or at least, that must be how you see it," he looks around, observing your confusion at his apparently relaxed state.

"I'm an unarmed prisoner, locked up under military law in a combat zone. Despite everything, I have rights. You ever hear of the Rights of Sentience? The Republic was always banging on about them, and a key part of that was that you can't torture a prisoner. You could get twenty years for that punch. Or what about Alliance High Command's standing order 1138? No? The one forbidding beating or torturing prisoners, on the grounds that it was against the spirit of the Alliance and the Republic," he pauses, to allow his words to sink in. "Just because I ignored their orders doesn't mean I don't know them. And if the Empire does it, why shouldn't I? Why shouldn't any of us?" he carries on smiling his manic smile. "You'll win this war yet, if you keep acting like that."

Liaka looks furious when Geoff comes out of the cell. “What the hell do you think you are doing, assaulting a prisoner? Have you completely lost your mind? We will talk after.”

She then storms into the cell, looking at the prisoner, and then at Oro and N97. “What the hell happened here?” Before they can answer, she holds up her hand, stopping them cold. “No, never mind. We will discuss this later.”

The Twi’lek then turns to Zavvel. “My name is Lieutenant Liaka Atala. I’ve been asked to take your statement. This,” she indicates Kiuxe, “is Ensign Kiuxe.”

She gives Zavvel a moment to take all this in, before pressing ahead. “You are accused of leading our own men into a trap, informing the Empire of an operation before it took place. Doing so, you caused the death of a number of soldiers and leaving more wounded."

Liaka pauses for a second, her face hard. "Let me be clear. You are accused of treason. Of causing the death of young men and women who looked up to you as their leader and an officer. I am not sure what you could have hoped to accomplice, but I would like your reaction to those accusations. Tell me. What caused a once loyal member of the Rebel Alliance to order so many soldiers to their deaths like so many Banthas to slaughter?”

"I think I made my motives clear to your friend. I hate the Empire as much as any of you, more so even, and what I did was done because I wanted to strike a blow against the Empire. We needed to hit them; we did so. They took far more casualties than we did, and we got the majority of our forces out alive and intact. Losses happen in war, that's to be expected, but we hit them hard. What I did was justified, and you can't say it wasn't," Zavvel glares up at Liaka.

"I sent no-one to the slaughter. I sent soldiers into battle, they fought, and they died. It happens. What more can we do?"

After no one offering a deathstick, Geoff goes over to his gear and pulls out a datapad. Better get this all written down. That way there would be less hassle later on.

Taking a seat by the guards, Geoff sighs, then look at the guards. "So, what did you guys hear?"

"Well by the sounds of things you guys started off with a perfectly nice chat in there," the seated soldier says. "And then someone started shouting, and someone threw a punch, and now me and my friend here are trying to work out whether we ought to go and speak to Lieutenant Braxus or not."

Kixue steps inside the cell with Liaka. He inclined his head slightly to the captive before speaking "The more you tell us the easier this can go."

(OOC: His last name is Noman)

When Lt Atala enters with Ensign Noman the droid shifts slightly to give them access to the prisoner.

Without moving his lower body N97 rotates his upper body nearly 180 degrees. Turned so that the prisoner can not read his display he comments: "Status: The prisoner has admitted to treason. He betrayed the Rebellion Army to the empire leading directly to the death of most of the Rebel Cell as well as many civilians. He ordered the destruction of civilian structures vital to the health of the civilian population."

Rotating back he keeps his built-in working Goo-gun pointed forward.

Shaking his head, Geoff starts typing his version of events. "Punch happened before the shouting, for the record. Not that it did much damage. Make sure you log it first, then make sure you get your reports to the Lieutenant. As for why, boggard in there said he tipped off the Empire to the operation. The same operation was actually an ambush and resulted in the death of several rebels, including the Colonel and Major along with their teams."

Looking up, Geoff took both men in stock. "I haven't been on the planet for twelve hours before I was pulled into the masscas due to that guy. I spent fourteen hours making sure that not one more rebel died on my watch. Add the other events to my stress level over the last two weeks and I am probably one of the few people who shouldn't be in the same base as him, let alone the same room."

Letting the two guards decide for themselves, Geoff gets back to typing his report.

"What more can I tell you?" asks Zavvel. "What is there still to cover?"

"Seems reasonable," says the seated guard.

"Anything we can do?" asks the standing one. "I've got a grudge or two to work out with that brakast."

"Are you guys going to want any more information, or are you done? Should I go and get the L-T?"

Liaka looks unimpressed. "We are just getting started, sweetheart. Who was your contact with the Empire? Who did you tell about the attack, and when did you tell them? Who in the rebel cell knew you were about to do this, or had done this? Who were your accomplices?"

As Zavvel thinks the Twi'lek keeps bombarding him with questions. "Did you tell them of our base? Did you intend to get the upper echelon of the cell killed, or was that just a happy coincidence for you? Did you think you had the ability to lead the cell yourself?"
