"He hasn't said anything at all. He only woke up this morning - evidently someone put him into a hell of a coma - and he's remained silent throughout. That's why we thought we'd send you - he might respond to you, while Ensign Noman can advise you," Braxus looks cautious - evidently he is unsure about sending you in, but you can tell it's the only way.
Edge of Darkness IC
When Lieutenant Braxus starts the briefing N97 rotates to face him directly. Not having any easy way to otherwise signify that he is paying attention he brightens the soft light around his visual sensors and puts up a low level color to his upper-chest display panel.
When called on, he dutifully takes the recording device from the Bothan and attaches it to his built in scanner, integrating the devices. He then moves to stand with the others on his newly formed team.
The droid has learned where his skills lay, and where they don't, so he is encouraged at Lt. Braxus' insight into his areas of expertise. This is of course that he is best utilized on the technical side of this mission instead of being assigned the social tasks. Even droids with social programming often don't get the same degree of response to their job as an organic would. N97 isn't bothered by this, he simply recognizes it as a true fact.
Edited by dtdunnNoman nods softly as the orders are relayed. He runs his fingers over his data pad as he pulls up a file and then looks over at Braxus. "Has his fate been determined yet?" Noman seems to be going over options in his head on how to use such information during an interrogation. He inclines his head slightly at the mention of being only an advisor and the indications that Braxus is cautious about him.
He then turns to the droid "Hey can you remotely control things like room temperature or lighting? Or maybe sounds?"
There is not a way for N97 to nod, so he response is displayed on his chest screen: "Statement: Affirmative. Will need 3:25 minutes of prep time."
"Good" Noman said "When you're ready I want to slowly darken the room and raise the temperature so that we can dissertation him some and make him think he's been there longer than he really has. Make him feel like he's been waiting longer than he has. And before we go in I'd like a few sounds of footsteps walking up and down the hall to give the sense that there is more activity going on. That should help make the time spent there seem longer."
"I'm afraid your options will be limited - we mainly chose the room because of the heaviness of the door - but there is electric lighting, so I suppose you could wire into the system and alter the power. Sound will be harder to manage, but I imagine he heard the party last night - who didn't - which isn't going to cheer him up. We've got people moving through between the storerooms regularly, but I'll add three or four of the off-duty troopers into the mix: probably the ones who went a bit far last night. And as for temperature, there isn't much we can do - these old rooms are kept cool and dry by their position and the climate, so there are no climate controls available for use," Braxus considers his next statement - and the weight it holds - carefully.
"We haven't decided his fate yet. Alliance High Command precludes execution, but I don't know what our own people will think of that as a ruling for long."
"I don't think we need to get into the whole mind-games thing. It's not something well suited to the field, and let's face it, we are almost in the field now, given our lack of resources. I don't think our intent is to break him, just find out what he's willing to tell us. No need to plan the more involved methods for now," Liaka responds.
"As for his fate, we are in a bit of a spot with that. I take it there is little chance of extracting him to face a tribunal? It was hard enough to get us to the planet with the Imperial securiy. And we can't exactly imprison him here when we're on the run, so to speak." She smiles wryly. "I don't have a solution at the end of this, just a bunch of problems. But we will do our best, sir."
Oro cracks his knuckles and mutters to himself. "Oh, I'll make him talk alright. Or at least have fun trying."
Liaka frowns, not sure if Oro is joking or not. "We are going to talk with him, not beat him up. We're not the Empire," she says coldly.
With the new information N97 adds to his display. "Update: Heater device would take 37 minutes to create with known materials"
"And if he's not willing to tell us anything? We may have to break him in order to make sure we get some useful information out of him." He can't help but chuckle lightly when Oro interjects. "We don't have to actually beat him up. We can always just lead him to believe bad things will happen to him if he doesn't cooperate." there was a short pause "We may not be the Empire but if he thinks there are no negative consequences he may opt to remain silent. We need some kind of bargaining position."
Oro snarls a bit. "No offense, but you two weren't there when this kriffing sleemo set us up and almost got us killed, not once, not twice, but three different times. There is no doubt in my mind he's not just incompetent, he's the enemy." He moves his neck back and forth, as if loosening up for a fight. "Don't worry though, I'll give him a fair chance to talk before I knock out every tooth in his ugly face. I've done this sort of thing before." He pats his knife and looks at each member of the group before going from snarl to smile. "Trust me," he says, not without a little bit of convincing charm.
Letting the rest of the team talk amongst themselves and Lieutenant Braxus, Geoff checks his supplies. Too much to do today and I'm now having to help interrogate the boggard that screwed us over. Personally, we would be better off shooting him and let it be.
When the conversation turned to torture and beating the former captain, Geoff looks up. "As much as physical discomfort would appease certain individuals, it has a tendency to cause more trouble in the long run than it is worth. Besides, if he has not been awake in some time, he might be hungry. I will also need to do a full medical scan on him to ensure there is nothing on or in him that will cause trouble for the cell. After all, we don't want to Empire to come bearing down on us."
Satisfied with his gear, Geoff locks it back up and turns to Lieutenant Braxus. "Anything else we need to know, sir? The sooner we get this done, the sooner I can get back to the cell setting up a clinic."
Kixue holds up his hands as he looks at Oro "Hold up I'm on your side. I honestly don't care what you do with him after we get what we need out of him. I'm just trying to work up an angle we can use to get the required intel."
Liaka looks at the Zabrak with a critical look on her face. "At least we know who's going to be the bad peaceofficer to my good peaceofficer during the interrogation. I'll try to play nice with him, and you can reinforce that by acting bad. No torture, no pain. But there is no harm in him believing you'll go that far. And I do belief everything you say about him. We just need him to tell us why and how."
She looks at Geoff and Braxus. "Unless there is anything else, should we get going? I want to get this unpleasantness over with just like you doctor." Liaka slides closer to Geoff. "And if you have something for a headache in that bag of yours I wouldn't say no to that. I'm not built for all this strong liquor," she whispers, and winks.
Edited by KymrelWhile the organics organizing their approach to the prisoner, N97 turns and heads to the electrical box for the building. Popping it open he does a quick scan of the system. Finding the correct connection to the lower level lights he pops out the circuit breaker.
With his other hand he reaches behind, rotating his arm in a way that is very unnatural, at least would be for an organic, and pulls out a small plug-looking electrical device. As he does this you can see that he has a second display, this one on his upper back, that brightens slightly to illuminate the contents of his backpack. Also now visible is a row of optical sensors on the back of his head. After a minute of adjusting the device with tools that fold out of his forearm, he plugs it into the breaker box. He is about to leave when he pauses. Shifting his stance he seems to be staring at the box. With a rotation of his head he sends a message to each of his team's comlinks, as well as to Lt. Braxus. "Priority Alert. Unknown device. Can not rule out situational compromise."
Bringing both arms forward with extraordinary speed, four spanners emerge from his forearms and the bolts attaching the front panel to the electrical box are rapidly spun out onto the floor. Jerking the entire panel off the wall the building is plunged into darkness. With the sudden change in the lighting the room falls silent, perhaps more with surprise than anything. Reaching in behind the panel the droid disconnects and removes a small black painted metal box. N97 then moves quickly up to Lt. Braxus, passing through beams of morning light streaming in the windows and presents the metal device for his inspection.
He puts up on his display: "Priority: Possible security compromise. 69% chance device has transmission capability. This exceeds risk profile for immediate notification. Now deactivated."
N97 adds: "Analysis: Box appears to be a clandestine communications device. Similar to those used by the 'Black-Sun' crime syndicate. Further information confirmation could be obtained by a dissection of the device, however there is a high risk of destroying the device." Then he N97 hands the device to the Lieutenant and turns to fix the circuit box he had ripped apart.
[OOC: Updated with better description of what he learned from his knowledge roll]
Edited by dtdunn"The Black Sun? You're serious? Why would they be out here? What might they be plotting? If it's a serious operation, we might have to look at a serious second threat." Braxus looks at the device in depth, then places it to one side. "I'll have the techs look at it, and see what it is. With any luck, they can tell us what they were trying to do. Until then, we shouldn't worry about it too much," his reassurance rings hollow, but you can tell that he has your best interests at heart.
Edited by ColonelCommissar"We should still determine what is to be done with him before ...." his thought gets interrupted as the message sent to his comm link gets displayed on his ever handy data pad. He is about to say something else when the building gets plunged into darkness. His hand slips down to his on his belt holster and he prepares himself to draw it in case of a sudden attack. It isn't until N97 returns with the mysterious box that his hand leaves his weapon. He steps over towards Braxus and picks up the device to examine it after the Lt. places it on its side.
"No, nooo this doesn't look like anything I've seen Black Sun use. I'm not sure who made this though. Maybe a bit more time with it ....." (Response edited to reflect new info given by the GM) He seems to be thinking for a moment as if trying to recall the last time he saw a device like this.
Edited by KaelLetting the new members chat amongst themselves, Geoff grabs a bottle for migraine relief from the bag. Guess they aren't in the mood to ask me for advice, Geoff thought as he takes two tablets out and handed them to the twi'lek.
As he does so, he notices the droid messing with the power box, which draws a frown from the surgeon. A pop and the darkening of the room makes it go deeper. Great.
Shaking his head, he double check the bags, ignoring the buzz on his commlink. Not my circus, not my monkey-lizard.
When the droid mentions a strange device, Geoff jerks up. As the debate goes, Geoff quickly processes it. Strange device, unknown forces. Debrief and interrogation of Zavvel, which means...
"FRAK IT! ORO, WITH ME!" Sneering at the possible thought, Geoff shoulders the bag and runs towards the door. "BLAST IT, LIEUTENANT. THERE BETTER BE A GORRAM GUARD AT HIS CELL!"
Moving quickly, Geoff leaves the rest of the team as he moves towards Zavvel's holding cell.
[sorry for the hijacking guys, but unknown devices in the briefing room is never a good sign. Geoff will be moving as quickly as possible to Zavvel's cell and will wait outside for anyone before going inside.]
Edited by Sarone"What do you mean?" Braxus shouts after them. "That cell's perfectly well guarded!"
Reaching the locked door in the passage below, Geoff sees the guards - one sat in a chair opposite the door, his A-280 rifle pointed towards it; the other holding a DH-17 carbine and stood next to it, looking in each direction down the long passage. "Any idea why the lights just went?" asks the standing guard. Geoff goes to look through a small crack in the wood, Oro just behind him. Inside, Zavvel can be seen sitting cross-legged, eyes closed, up against the wall. "What's up?" asks the guard. "Do the brass upstairs think we let him out or something?" he seems genuinely startled by your behaviour.
Liaka remains calm and thoughtful. She does not pursue Sarone to check on the prisoner. If the item was a listening device of some kind it was used to listen in on transmission. Nobody would use a clunky device like this to listen in on conversations here. Devices used for that were much smaller and were not bolted on to a wall.
"Let's not be hasty. I think whatever damage this device has done has been done already. Now we need some techies to dissect it to find out just what it does. If we can do so without destroying the device we could perhaps use it for our advantage" she says calmly.
"We'll interview Zavvel and worry about this device later," she says. She looks at Braxus, nods and gives him a quick "sir" before heading after Geoff.
Once she gets to the cell she listens to the conversation between the doctor and the two guards as she walks in the corridor.
Seeing the former captain still in the cell, Geoff quickly looks to the guards. "Is there a log for visitors? Command has some questions and I want to double check the logs before seeing the prisoner."
As he waits for the guards to answer, Geoff notices the twi'lek. "Sorry about the scene. I just hate surprises, especially when dealing with scum like the Black Sun. I'll go in first an check the captain's vitals and make sure there aren't any surprises. In the mean time, we should see if N97 can do a diagnostic on our equipment, vehicles, and buildings."
Within a minute the lights and power return to the building. N97 leaves the device with Lt. Braxus and heads down the stairs to the location of the prisoner.
Awaiting orders he takes a stance in the middle of the hall a short distance down from the prisoners door.
To the Docter he replies via comlink, "Statement: Order received. Order Priority: Assist with interrogation per Leutenant Braxus, then inspect equipment, particularly in light of the discovered device."
Edited by dtdunnThe guards seem startled by Geoff's request. "He hasn't had any guests apart from a single medical orderly, Specialist Haru, and he's been searched every time he went in and out. Did you want to see him now? Lieutenant Braxus mentioned he'd have some guests stopping by."
