Edge of Darkness IC

By ColonelCommissar, in Star Wars: Age of Rebellion RPG

Toco slowly pushes Rax through the crowd and tries to make eye contact with Geoff;

"Great job, Doc." as he flashes a genuine smile.

A guy could do worse than this for squadies. He thinks to himself looking over Geoff and Rax. Where is Oro?

Nodding, Geoff takes a knee and doubles check the patient. "I suggest we get Mr. Kolk here to some place quiet where he can rest and recuperate, Mrs. Karel. As well as make sure someone can keep an eye on him until he is up and ready."

Looking up, Geoff spots Toco and Rax heading towards him. Always good to have squadmates and backup. Force knows what happens without good back up.

"Greetings Toco, Hotdog. This is Solara Karel, the local healer. You guys looking around and checking the place?"

Oro yawns, stretches, checks that his knives and still readily available, and rolls over and back to sleep, catching up on some much needed sleep before the next time he needs to stab people.

Looking around at situation, Toco reaches into the sack cloth bag he was carrying. The one given to him by the harvesters.

"Looks like a good enough time for this." He pulls out a bottle of salive liquor.

"You guys want to toast a hard day of not killing beings?" A smile slowly grows upon his face .

"Not enough to make us forget, but enough to make the night better."

Returning the smile, Geoff shakes his head. "Not right now. I want to help Mrs. Karel first with these patients. Heck, if you can, get a hold of Lieutenant Braxus and see if he wants Specialist Haru, Bolus, or Mesko get some aid station time. Never know when we will have similar issues crop up."

Turning to Karel, Geoff nods at the rest of the patients. "Ready to help people?"

Rax looks at Toco and the bottle. "Later. Perhaps we can get this old guy on a stretcher or something and off the floor. Don't want doc's good work to go to waste."

The pilot, feeling hopelessly out of his element, looks for a streatcher or something else he can use to get the patient Goff just revived from underfoot.

"Always," the healer almost snaps, then softens. "Thankyou. And it's Ms Karel, not that I should have to explain myself to an importunate young whipper-snapper like you. What are you anyway, thirty-something? They get younger every year," she grins, and sets to helping others in the queue, Geoff laying in beside her. However the street is now even more bustling. People are swarming in to see what's going on, while others are heading out to spread word of what happened. In the low-tech community of the mountain village Kolk's salvation seems to have been a miracle, and runners go from house to house eagerly spreading the word. A crowd is growing around the building, even as a group of villagers lift Kolk's stretcher and begin carrying it towards his house.

Nodding at the rebuke Ms. Karel made, Geoff looks at the gathering crowd. "Seems like the village isn't used to medical technology. Or technology for that matter. When was the last time there was any help from the government?"

As he waits for Ms. Karel's reply, Geoff turns to Toco and Rax. "Toco, can you send a report to Lieutenant Braxus. The situation here is quickly becoming a diplomatic one and might need command's input on this."

"Sure, but looks to me like a village of appreciative beings. She is just.... being who she is." Toco tries to hide his smile.

"LT. Geoff wants you to know he saved a life at the healers home and may have drawn a lot of attention. He wishes Command's input or someone with rank here to advise."

He makes his way to the edge of the crowd and pops open the bottle.

"Here is to not killing beings, today." And takes a large pull.

Walking over to the edge of the road he slowly pours the remainder out.

"And here is to those who didn't make it to see the mountain view and all the smiles." He quietly adds.

Sleep might be good.

Toco heads back to his rack.

"Help from the government? That's been a long time. The mountain villages have always had an independent streak, and in turn the planetary government hasn't exactly laid in to help us - not that that's a problem, we don't need most of their luxuries up here, and we get by just fine looking for ourselves. Of course occasionally there's a problem - as you've seen here - but for the most part we've survived. As for help from wider governments, the Republic pretty much ignored our world, and the Empire cracked down pretty heavily on Arkos. I've been here for coming on twenty years, and in that time I doubt we've had much more political influence in this village than the local mayor's election."

Braxus responds on the comm.

"So I heard. I've been pulled away from the lower town, apparently they want all our people in the main square. Something about gratitude for saving your man's life? Can you clarify any further?"

"Geoff was looking to help out and emergent case showed up. Saved that man's life. He does **** good work, Sir. Village seems ... impressed? Not angry, but not carrying him on their shoulders either."

Toco tries to orient toward village center proper.

"We gathering up?"

"I'll go get Oro," Rax volunteers. "I think I saw him lying down somewhere. I'll try to wake him gently so that he doesn't skewer me when I get him up. We'll meet you in the main square. I assume we're not expecting an ambush..."

Rax heads out of the crowd and tries to find the sleeping Zabrak. When he does he nudges him with his foot. "Hey Oro, the Lieutenant wants us to assemble in the main square. You coming?"

Hearing the state of affairs, Geoff looks over at the healer, a look of concern on his face. "That... is less than helpful to know. If there was no support from the planetary government, that can cause trouble for everyone in the long run."

Geoff was about to ask another question when he heard the Lieutenant's report. "That is also not good to hear. I mean, it's good to save someone's life, but I have just begun. However, if you are right, then we might be able to help out each other. Just curious, would help me pack up the gear? I also would like to ask some more questions about other local problems and cures, if that's alright."

Once Ms. Karel starts helping Geoff and the last of the villagers leave them and Toco is out of earshot, Geoff quickly looks at the healer and whispers. "I didn't want to bring it up in front of others, but unless I am mistaken, you are a Force User, possibly a Jedi. Is that a correct assessment?"

"That's not the only thing that could cause trouble in the long run," Karel growls, her previous jovial hostility giving way to genuine anger. "I don't know what you're talking about, so why don't you drop it?"

The radio squawks before Geoff can respond. "I'll have a couple of my guys swing by to help you pack up. See you there shortly."

Oro yawns, stretches, climbs out of bed, and tucks his knives into his belt.

"Is it time for some action?"

"Well, perhaps not much action, but the brass wants us in the main square so that's where I'm headed," Rax replies, giving Oro a hand to get up. He leads the way to the center of the village, looking for the others.

Raising his hands up, Geoff looks around to make sure no one was listening, as well as make sure his comms were off. "Look, I noticed what you did and it got me thinking. That's why I was asking, especially now that the Empire might be looking for us. We also have a convoy that has not been seen. They headed out before us and should already be in the area, or at least communicating with us. We had also heard of a possible Jedi ruin here, in the mountains. That's why I figured you might be someone we could trust."

Lowering his hands, Geoff turns to pack up his gear and reset the straps on the back pack. Glancing at the healer, Geoff let some of the sadness in. "I understand why you don't want to help, can't blame you in fact. But the Empire isn't going to stay away forever. Not since they destroyed Alderaan with the Death Star recently. That was why I quit the Refugee Relief Movement and contracted to the Alliance."

Grabbing the back pack, Geoff quickly puts it back on before heading out. "Whether not you believe me or my intentions, I am being upfront and honest. I just don't want you or your villagers to be blindsided should war come to this place."

[Geoff will make sure no one was listening to the conversation before he told Ms. Karel this information. I don't know if you want to add or subtract to the pool, but this is information that she should know about.]

"Drop. It." Karel is firm. "I know all about you people, and your **** fool crusade. You can all get yourselves killed fighting the Empire for some mad ideology, but I'm happy here, tending my flock, healing the people, and having a quiet life. I admire what you are trying to do, but really, for my sake, yours, and everyone else's in this village, just leave me be," she helps Geoff pack away the last of his gear, grimacing, but nonetheless happy to help - if only to see him gone faster.

However as she leaves, she calls after him. "You want help, talk to the village leaders. They might give you aid, even if I won't. If you tell them I sent you it might make them a little more sympathetic to your cause."

Nodding at her, Geoff turns to go. "Thank you. My apologies for bringing up a new war for you. Hopefully we can keep it from this place."

Shouldering the gear, Geoff goes to Toco, doing his best to keep a smile on his face. "Come on, man. Let's go see what the noise is about in the village square."

"Just cause the fight didn't use a blaster, doesn't mean it wasn't rough. Good try, Doc."

Toco offers to shoulder his kit and let him relax on the walk to the village centre.

The village square is packed with people, many of them Rebels but still a large majority dressed in the loose-fitting clothes of the local population. A cool evening breeze is washing in over the square, exposed as it is on two sides to the elements, the mountains visible to the west and a sharp cliff dropping down into the valley to the east. The locals seem in a very cheerful mood - children chasing through the crowd, youths climbing lamp-posts to get a better view, and a loud hubbub of conversation filling the square. You meet on its north side, joining a gaggle of other Rebels, their weapons absent, having been left in their billets - apparently Braxus has given permission for the men to leave their gear behind, both to give them a chance to rest, and to calm any fears of the locals.

You have been waiting for only a few moments, when a collection of figures appear from the shadowed, columned colonade marking the front of the town hall and move into the square. The hubbub dies down as they move to the fountain in the centre of the square, clambering up onto the broad rim of its basin to survey the crowd. You can see Lt. Braxus is with them, and that he is grinning broadly.

(Waiting for a brief PC catchup/discussion; will move on if nothing picks up)

Rax notices Toco and Geoff approaching and waves them closer to a spot he and Oro have found.

The pilot apparently didn't get the memo about leaving weapons behind, but since he has so far not carried anything heavier than his customized blaster pistol he feels confident it will not cause too much of an alarm.

"Rax!" Toco gives a half sigh. "This was supposed to be without guns."

He shifts Geoff's kit over to the pilot and has him carry it to obscure the weapon.

"I guess that makes you chief orderly, now."

He reaches out and bumps Oro's shoulder. Gives him a nod and a smile.

"Do I look like a **** Jedi mind-reader to you?" Rax says in a tone that suggest that any hints of him taking offense are made in jest only. "Nobody told me to leave the hardware at the store," he hisses in a more subdued tone.

He grabs Geoff's kit and shifts it mostly to his right side so that it covers the holster that hangs low on his hip. The holster is strapped around his thigh to allow the weapon to sit still and even be drawn without problems while seated, a common arrangement with pilots who, for some reason, go armed in the cockpit.

"So, what's all this hub-bub about? Is this a party, you think? Loose women and home-brewed booze perhaps?" The young pilot puffs out his chest a bit as he tries to see what's going on. "The chicks dig a medic, right?" He says, looking at Geoff's kit. "If they ask, I'm a medic. Save a bunch of lives and all that. Act it up a little, I'm torn up over not being able to save my true love and this is why I became a medic. Chicks love a tragic hero. Can be all sorts of comforting to a guy like that. Make a lot of effort," he says, nudging Toco with a grin that reminds Toco just how young the pilot is.
