Edge of Darkness IC

Setting his gear down, Geoff quickly moves to ensure the bedding was washed and dried, doing his best to ensure he was a good guest. Afterall, it doesn't hurt to make sure we are pulling our weight.

Once finished with the work, Geoff quickly grabs his back pack with the dual medical equipment and goes to the landlady. "Ma'am, my name is Geoff and I am one of the Medics for the cell. Can you point me in the direction of the local doctor? I would like to offer my skills and assistance to them."

Feeling refreshed after the long nap Rax is patient with the children as they examine his gear. "Hey, look at this, this is pretty cool, right?" he says, removing the power cell from his blaster and handing the weapon to one of the taller children.

As the children pass the blaster around he explains what each part does, taking special pride when describing how he's added a Blaster Actuating module to make the blaster far more deadly than the standard pistol.

"And if you think this is cool, you should see the starfighter I'll get once we get off this... Once I'm back in space. I've got my eye on the new T-65B. Yeah, the X-Wing is a pretty neat fighter, and nearly perfect once you've tweaked it. It's not that hard to boost the output manifolds when you know what you're doing. Of course, if you do it wrong you won't survive those High-G turns so you better know what you're doing with all that," he says, finally reclaiming his pistol. He replaces the power cell and puts the blaster in the holster again, making sure the strap keeping the weapon in the holster even in a rolling starfighter in atmo is attached.

"So, what do people do around here to pass time. Well, other than working of course? Anything interesting to see around here? Something that doesn't require too much hiking?"

"Doctor?" the woman asks. "He's three valleys over and six thousand feet up. But there's a healer in the village who you might want to go and see. She's usually on the steps of the faith-house if you need her."

"There's not much that happens here," one of the elder children tells Rax. "At least not in daytime. But once the sun sets I'm sure things will liven up around here; we rarely have this many visitors."

Nodding at the landlady, Geoff shoulders the equipment, then walks to Oro. "Hey man, let everyone know I'll be helping the locals with any medical problems. That should help us out a bit."

Double checking his equipment and satisfied with it, Geoff heads to the local faith-house and the healer.

The faith house is on an alley-way coming down off the village square, a steep descent that is nonetheless packed with market stalls, street sweepers and children running up and down. The village is coming alive as evening draws in, and it is cool at street level as the sun drops below the level of the high, narrow streets. The heat of the day remains, but with the mountain air and the shade it is nothing but a pleasant ambience, through which Geoff leisurely makes his way.

He can tell that he's coming to the right place when the queue of people with ailments appears along the side of the street. They are almost entirely small injuries - an old woman with a hacking cough, a man clutching a jaw throbbing with tooth-ache, a few youths trying to avoid being seen by one-another, concealing the evidence of pimples defacing their features - though he sees a man sat on a bench, eyes closed and deathly pale. Geoff hastens to the front of the queue, where an elderly Cerean woman bends over a brawly farmhand, who nurses his shoulder and is complaining of pulled muscles. She considers it for a moment, then reaches into a haversack and pulls out a certain poultice which she clamps to the man's shoulder, eyes closed, mouth muttering a few inaudible words. The man lets out a sudden gasp of relief - he stands, rolling his shoulder freely with excitement, and pushes a few of the local coins into the healer's hand, despite her protests against it. The man sets off down the street to find his friends, while the healer replaces the poultice in her bag and croaks, "Next?"

Waiting for Sarone, unless anyone else wants to contribute anything.

Seeing her methods, Geoff's eyebrow raised up as he quietly process the information. Hmm, interesting.

Hearing her statement, Geoff steps forward and extends his hand. "Ma'am, Geoff Hanson, trauma surgeon, former Refugee Relief Movement and attached to the Alliance. Can I be of assistance to you?"

[should I make any rolls or just go with observations for now?]

"Eh?" the woman notes the outstretched hand with confusion. "Oh, right, you're one of those Rebels," she takes Geoff's hand as if it is a bearer of every contagion under the stars. "Have you got any peccadinthinol?"

No checks necessary for now. Peccadinthinol is a basic painkiller in your medkit; you've got more than enough.

"I have some basic medical supplies and other items and equipment. Would you like me to set up an area so I can assist you?" Geoff lifts his backpack with both the Medpack and ECM. "Also, has there been any major health issues that I should be aware?"

"Assistance? I don't really need it. I've got everything I need, and the worst I get is usually some kid who's got an allergic reaction off a web-wasp or someone who want too far with the salivar. No major concerns recently, but if you can handle doling out basic painkillers I'm always up for an extra pair of hands."

Eyebrow raised, Geoff looks over at the line of patients awaiting her. "Ma'am, a couple of painkillers aren't going to help. You have a couple elders here who need treatment, a guy with some dental work, and a couple kids about to learn how messed up life can be at times. I'm here to actually help heal people, not just dole out candy."

[is there a social check to get her to consider my assistance?]

After making his way to the house the team is staying at, Toco washes up. Work with purpose feels amazing.

As he checks his gear, he chirps his comm to signal the LT.

"LT? You free for a sec?"

"Kid, you need to realise that not everything is a crisis," the Cerean tells Geoff. "You're used to emergency treatment, but that's not what we get around here. Look at these people: do they need someone worrying needlessly, or do they need someone who'll give them a little of what they need and a lot of advice on how to avoid it?" The Cerean leans in closer.

"You can't see much about these people, you don't know them like I do. But I know their spirit, I can - see - their spirit. You wouldn't understand," she rapidly states. "But you can really help by - " She is cut off by the sudden sight of the man on the bench slumping to the floor, with people crying out in sudden shock.

I'd like a Hard (DDD) Medicine check please.

"**** it."

The slide of the man was Geoff's first warning the patient was going fast. Reacting from years of training and experience, Geoff hits the releases on the straps, his right hand grabbing the shoulder strap. Letting gravity work with him and the backpack, Geoff turns and lifts the backpack up on the table next to him. Letting more than a glance to ensure it stayed secure, Geoff quickly runs over to the casualty, scanner in hand.

"I need a clear space, stat! Ma'am, do you know this guy? Does he have a history of any serious illness?"

Letting the scanner do its work, Geoff quickly pulls out a small torch, then looks into the patient's eyes...

The healer crouches next to Geoff and the fallen man. "This one? Hobert Kolk, one of the field workers. Healthy, hardy, strong, nothing more serious than the occasional hangover, and I've been here for twenty years."

Geoff looks down into his eyes - dilated pupils. The patient is covered in a sheen of sweat and breathing thinly. He fell onto his side, and a small amount of blood can be seen from where he must have hit his head while falling. Somewhere, a woman's voice is screaming for help. The whole street has stopped in its business to look on in horrified fascination. He may have only moments to act.

"Sir, can you hear me," Geoff says as he checks for a pulse.

[i had forgotten to add the blasted results to the previous post. Been a long couple of days.]

Geoff goes to check the pulse, and what he finds stops him dead. The man is going into cardiac arrest; he only has moments to act. He withdraws the defibrillator from the ECM, connecting up the electro-pads to Kolk's chest and readying the machine. As he does so the healer begins speaking to the fallen man.

"Hobert, can you hear me? No, I suppose not, but I'm sure you can understand me well enough," she reaches out a hand, placing it just above his forehead. "Be at peace, Hobert. Be calm, do not feel fear. You will recover from this, because you have a fine surgeon to care for you. But we are reliant on you; do not be afraid, do not struggle, do not strain. Remember, there can be no emotion, only peace. Be at rest, and you will live," even as she finishes talking, he jolts as Geoff launches a shock through him. Picking back up the medical scanner, he sees that his condition has stabilised. The healer lets out a sigh of relief. "Blessed are we, to have such fortune."

Wiping his forehead and running his hand over head, Geoff looks at the healer. "So, now that the excitement is over, care to redo that introduction." Extending his hand out in greeting, Geoff gives a smile. "Geoff Hanson, trauma surgeon and former-RRM, currently serving as medic and trauma surgeon. You're the healer of the village?"

The Cerean takes his hand and grasps it. "Solara Karel, healer of this village's bodies and minds," she looks straight into Geoff's eyes. "Without you here, there would have been nothing I could have done for this man beyond easing his passing. I can only do so much for them, and what you did here went far beyond that," already people are looking around and talking in hushed whispers; word of what happened will soon pass around the village.

Walking past the big gaggle of people near the healer's house, Toco chirps Braxus again.

"Lieutenant Braxus?" He distractedly inquires as he catches a glimpse of Geoff in the astonished crowd.

Feeling rather bored in the quiet village Rax spies some sort of commotion and sees Toco heading towards it. He hurries after his friend and catches up with him as he distractedly holds his commlink. "What's going on? Is there a fight?"

"Not certain, but Geoff seems to be everyone's focus."

Toco wanted to make a wisecrack, but the gathering's tone killed that idea fast.

"Trooper Ract?" Braxus' voice comes back. "What can I do for you? I'm heading to the lower town; any idea what this commotion's about?"

Motioning over to Rax, Toco comms back;

"Sir, looks like Geoff is at the local healer's place. People are gathered, but not sure what is happening."

Giving a wink to Rax,

"Wanna take a better look?"

Toco winks at Rax, but the lithe pilot is already moving, trying to get through the crowd to see if Geoff is alright. "Not going to let no country bumpkin grease Doc," he thinks to himself as he pushes his way through, only to see Geoff standing over a patient conversing with a local. "Looks like our boy here was in the right spot at the right time," he says quietly to Toco.

"I'm dealing with some of ours boys down here; let me know if there's any need for me to come up there," Braxus closes the line.
