Edge of Darkness IC

By ColonelCommissar, in Star Wars: Age of Rebellion RPG

As Rax is getting set up, he glances up at the sky for a moment. Big mistake: the moon comes out from behind a cloud, bathing everything in an approximation on night. Rax is dazzled, but for the moment you are at an advantage.

Rax's next check has its difficulty increased by 1, but there's no Setback due to darkness for you guys this turn. Mechanics checks can go ahead now.

Hearing that they may not need to stick around as long, Geoff smiles. Good thing we did the reevaluation. That means we can leave early and still get the job done.

Turning off the lights and datapads, Geoff gets the cloak off CT and Oro. "That's some good news for us, then. Still, four is cutting It close. We'll set the four, then attempt five we haven't been spotted yet."

Quickly, Geoff opens the backpack to take out the charges and stuffs the cloak inside the bag, then points at the farthest pillar. "Let's go for the farthest ones out, then come around. That way the last one we rig will be on the way out."

[Maneuver #1: Take out the two charges and stuff the cloak.

Maneuver #2: Take two strain to move to the farthest designated pillar.

Action: Skilled assistance to CT for rigging the charge.]

See OOC for plan.

Toco, with the support team, wants to be keeping an eye on the imps to see if/when they notice anything. Sighting his rifle on likely targets.

Rolling upto the first pillar with Geoff and Toco we prepare to set the first charge.

Demolitions set up - Mechanics roll with help: 3eA+2eP+1eB+1eD+1eC 1 success, 4 advantage
a-s.pnga-a-a.pnga-a-a.pngp--.pngp-s-a.pngb-s.pngd-th.pngc-f-f.png

That's nice. How do you want to spend the advantage?

[to be able to set the thing up quicker. what about you both, Geoff and Toco, any particular way to spend it?]

The night is dark, and full of...well, Imperials. You can sense them moving around the bridge, though whether they are five metres away or five hundred is a matter of some confusion. Still, you know they're out there, even as they glide from one pillar to the next.

The action list here is:

Stealth roll (probably Rax)

Mechanics roll (probably CeeTee)

Other rolls (Overwatch team)

Issan had found a nice spot on the over-watch team's side of the bridge, a perfect spot for a pan shot of the demolition. However, Issan remembered the real reason he was hanging back, focusing through his camera receiver on whatever the Imperials might be doing around the bridge. "Hey Toco, I got a few blind spots on my end, mind checking them for me?"

Checking on Imperial Activity: 1eP+3eA+1eB+3eD+1eS 2 successes, 2 threat

p-s-a.pnga-s.pnga-s.pnga-a.pngb--.pngd-th.pngd-th.pngd-th-th.pngs-f.png

As Issan looks out over the bridge, he is able to begin charting the locations of the nearest Imperial patrols to the demolition zone. What he doesn't realise however is that as he came up the valley side to reach the top of the bridge, Toco has shifted across in their position to cover him, in the process dislodging earth from the bank behind which they hid. An Imperial sentry, hearing the trickle of dirt and rocks, raises his blaster into the darkness, taking a moment to see if he hears anything further.

The Stealth check is upgraded once, but has a Setback added to the pool.

Rax squints as he surveys the scene, watch the sentry carefully to see if the man investigates further.

mega Stealth roll: 1eP+4eA+1eB+1eC+2eD+1eS 1 success, 1 threat
p-s-a.pnga-a.pnga-a.pnga--.pnga-a.pngb--.pngc-th-th.pngd-th.pngd-th.pngs-th.png

Rax leans up from his position, seeing the sentries far away, not coming any closer. All seems calm for now. For now. He yawns as he goes back down. He probably should have taken a bit more rest coming out, but no matter. They're here now.

Take one Strain, and then we can have the mechanics check. Any of the demo team can roll it since it's such a team effort, so we can move things along.

Ensuring the demo charge was set, Oro, CT, and Geoff move to the next pillar. Once there, Geoff uses CT's demo charge, the doctor sets the charge with the droid's help. Come on, stay good for us.

Demo Roll #2: 2eA+2eP+2eD 2 successes, 2 advantage
a-a-a.pnga-s-a.pngp-s-a.pngp-a.pngd-th.pngd-th-th.png

[Actions: Move to the next pillar. Use the maneuver that CT has to draw his demo charge (CT moved to the pillar previously). Use CT's demo charge on the pillar.

I'll use the advantages to add a Boost dice to Rax's next check. Two pillars rigged, two to go.

I'm tracking that Geoff should have three demo charges on him and Oro should have one.]

Rax keeps a steady flow of quiet information to the demo team, doing his best to help them evade Imperial patrols. Almost there...

stealthing: 1eP+4eA+1eB+2eD 0 successes, 6 advantage
p-a.pnga-s.pnga-a.pnga-a-a.pnga-a.pngb-a.pngd--.pngd-f.png
Not certain what to do with the advantages, here...

Rax looks around him, and as he does so the moon comes out from behind a cloud, vast across the sky, shining light down on the valley. Rax sees four teams of Imperial Army troopers at long range, and more further away - and one team looking straight towards the bridge.

The next stealth check has one difficulty upgrade, but you can now tell where the Imps are. However, the moon coming out gives this turn's Mechanics check a Boost, making it PPAABDD

Finished with the second charge, the demo group moves the third pillar. Along the way, Geoff looks up and around, trying to see if anyone has noticed them. Come on, we only need this one and the next before we can leave.

Demo Roll #3: 2eA+2eP+1eB+2eD 2 successes, 2 advantage
a-s.pnga-s.pngp-a-a.pngp--.pngb-a.pngd--.pngd-th.png

I'll leave that Boost open to whoever needs it. It would probably Rax. With the success of the three demo checks so far, they should all be going off at the same time. CT would have decided the timing, just to be clear.

Once the next demo charge is set, Support team can open fire should they choose so. Select your targets and make you shots count, Security Team.

Geoff has two Demo Charges and Oro has one.

For now, your luck holds out. You're most of the way towards completing your objective, without any indication that the Imperials are any the wiser. Just a little longer, and you'll be on your way out. However, with the moon shining down on you and the fact that you've dawdled for a while already, as well as the Imperials being on the lookout for any follow-up attacks after last night's fighting, that could well change.

And now for the last - perhaps - Stealth roll of this mission. It's Average, but with a Setback.

Rax keeps a wether eye on Imperial movements. "Almost there, chums. Just a couple more..."

stealth again: 5eA+2eD+1eB+1eS 3 successes, 1 threat
a-s.pnga-s.pnga-s.pnga--.pnga-s.pngd-th.pngd-f-f.pngb-s-a.pngs-th.png

Rax looks up and spots an Imperial patrol coming down the riverside, just a few dozen metres from the demolitions team. He hisses a warning, forcing them to crouch down. Time is against them, and they must plant the charge, but they have to do it carefully.

Final demolitions check please. This one is Average with a Setback.

Hearing that a patrol was coming, the Demo group quickly moves to the fourth pillar. Grabbing the second demo charge, Geoff helps CT with the setup. Almost there...

Demo Roll #4: 2eA+2eP+2eD+1eS 1 success, 1 advantage
a-a.pnga-a.pngp-s-s.pngp-a.pngd-th.pngd-f-th.pngs--.png

Before synchronizing the demo charge to the rest, Geoff looks at CT and Oro, whispering to them. "You all want to nail a fifth pillar or leave now? We leave now, we can set this to go after we clear the blast area. Otherwise, we set it to go with the others and get the fifth one to be our distraction."

[Action: Geoff is holding off on setting the timer. He wants to get a good consensus from Demo team before moving on. Whether that is to another pillar or out of the blast zone is the question.

In addition, Boost to the next check by however needs it for any reason.]

Edited by Sarone

I say, we keep the spare charge, never know when it could be useful...

You had six issued, so there are two spare charges

[Ok, it seems the consensus is run since it is about to get hot.]

Seeing that Oro and CT are happy with what they have done and are ready to bug out, Geoff turns back to the demo charge and sets the timer. Hopefully we have enough time to get out of here...

[Ok, timer is set for six rounds. Rax found another path that is shorter and easier to get out of the blast zone. Not long after the first charge goes off the others will go at the same time. Any one want to start the fireworks early for the Imperials?]

[i say get out quietly. then when the news hits, we claim the pride]

With the timer counting down, Demo team, made up of Oro, CT, and Geoff, start running.

"Move, move." Geff makes his way to Rax, grabbing his medpac before looking at Toco. "Get the Brick here quickly."

Not even bothering to put the medpac into the back pack, Geoff runs with the rest of the team up the new path Rax found for them. At least this one is a bit faster.

As the seconds dragged on waiting for Tookur and The Brick, Geoff looks at his chrono, counting down the seconds. Hopefully our calculations are correct.

One Tookur arrived, the team start boarding the truck when the first charge goes off, causing everyone to look back. "Cover charge has went off. One minute until main charges go," Geoff says, looking at Issan. "Get that cam droid rolling, Issan, because those next three are going to be coming up fast."

With the group moving a bit further down the road, the sirens from the Imperial Garrison there blare. Their efforts to warn others is a mixed blessing, as Geoff holds up an spread hand in the direction of the bridge. As each second pass, Geoff closes his hand, before giving a thumbs up as the remaining three charges go.

Reflecting on the design and their impromptu debate, Geoff looks at the support team. "The bridge wasn't in the best of shape. When we gotten there, we noticed that the supports weren't being maintained very well. This lead to a degraded nature setting in for the supports. While the bridge might have been able to survive another coulpe of years of flooding, the charges and explosives would ensure it's demise."

As Geoff spoke, the rest of the team looks on. The as the dust clears, it becomes more obvious that the Doctor's words rang true. The four columns that were target came down with their part of the bridge, but the two before and the after the targeted columns were also damaged, with one being blown in half. "While the death toll might not be as high as the commander wants, we have demonstrated our technical skills. Now we just need to do a repeat performance. Hopefully later on, though."

Tookur grins. "That was a good explosion. You should do that more-more often!" the truck drives off down the road, into the dawn. As you look back, you see the vast pile of rubble rising in a triangle. A good thirty metres of the lower bridge, the water passage, has completely broken away. Water is sluicing down into the valley, washing away the first Imperials who came running to the initial blast, while more is pouring out with every minute. Above, a fifty metre stretch of the roadway and sixty metres of the train line are gone, rubble and twisted metals collapsed down into the valley basin. It looks like it will take months to recover. As you drive away, everything seems pretty good for you.

"Attention, Revenant 1. Come in immediately."
