Is it worth using Gray Squadrons instead of Gold Squadrons now?

By BCooper85, in X-Wing

As always, it will depend on what you are facing and what the rest of your squad has.

In the current unstable TLT meta they might be good.

The Obsidian swarm is strong vs. PS2 Y-WIngs and the Gray Y-Wing will outbid those. It's all about maximizing against what you think you will be up against in a tournament (in a casual game, it doesn't matter as we are simply having to much fun doing pewpew noices).

If you can PS kill an enemy before it fires, Grays are good.

Exactly. Whilst shooting first is broadly a good thing, Pilot Skill matters differently to different ships because they do different jobs and are scared of different things.

A TIE swarm actively likes having the lowest pilot skill because many ships, especially with barrel roll, make superb blockers, and whilst they're easy enough to kill, one pilot can rarely kill more than a single ship, no matter how flimsy it is or how well armed they are. PS1 is fine, and anything else is just 'stuff to spend points on'.

TIE interceptors live and die by arc dodging and getting shots off first. This is why the frequency you see squint pilots is directly proportional to their pilot skill - and frankly even if their pilot abilities swapped around a bit, I don't think that'd change too much. The highest PS possible is crucial to their effectiveness - which is why the Starviper - the closest thing Scum & Villainy has - gets ragged on a lot because it's best pilot is "only" PS7.

Bombers (of any flavour, from K-wings to Firesprays) depend on their bombs - mines want to be dropped at low PS where they can be dropped onto someone before they move or directly in their path, whilst bombs want to be dropped at high PS - so the battlefield is as close as possible to how it will look when they detonate.

Y-wings and B-wings fall somewhere in the middle - not massively bothered about being blocked and not agile enough to block, nor fast or agile enough to arc dodge most of the time, pilot skill is more simply a matter of who shoots first; in which case, since it takes massed fire to kill them, you're trying to outbid your opponent's generic pilots, not compete with his aces.

My default Rebel List has been:

2x Grey Squadron Pilot + R2 Astromech + Ion Cannon Turret

2x Gold Squadron Pilot + same

Gives a nice spread of PS, as well as the control aspect. I've been considering, as an experiment:

4x Grey Squadron + R2 Astromech + Engine Upgrade

Better mobility, and helps keep stuff in arc. I suspect most people on here would balk at a list based on four two attack dice ships, however.

Also note, these lists work for Scum as well, swapping the R2s for Unhinged.

The credibility of this thread is bolstered by the sheer number of posts sporting Y-wing profile pictures.

Played with 2 daggers the other day. The ps 4 saved my bacon a number of times

Aye, didn't Paul Heaver (or some other fellow) win Worlds/Nationals in part because they used Daggers to take advantage of being able to shoot before all the other generics?

Bumping from 2 to 4, or even 1 to 3, isn't usually a terrible idea. Being able to kill without worry of simultaneous fire and avoiding double Predator re-rolls are both pretty huge. The trade-off is now you're at risk of generics blocking you.

Of course, with Daggers you could take Advanced Sensors and BR out of the way of blockers. With Grays, you can still forgo the title and just strafe with turrets (unless you need to StressBot for Vrill!).

Oh also, I've played with Grey's with engine. Not gonna win any tournaments but an awful lot of fun

I have been running a list with a Gray Warthog. His primary job is to stress things for Mr. Vrill.

You already said that.

But I still only use my Gray to set up Eaden Vrill.

Can't tell if that was an intentional joke, but I laughed either way.

The PS 4 Y-wings on the Rebels side can also take the R2-D6 unit which gives them an elite pilot talent slot. Marksmanship works really well with these guys, pair him up with Kyle and you get your defensive focus token as well.

Thanks guys, reading this has convinced me to go Grey, it will be the first time I've ever used them!

Now to work out what to use the other 46 points for....

I could be WAY off base here, but it seems to me that if you're going to run Y-wings with TLT, it would make sense to take Bomb Loadout and a Seismic Charges or Ion Bombs to deter opposing ships from zipping into Range 1. It means you will only have 42 points left, but it may help.
