Teeny-Tiny Asteroids

By gamblertuba, in X-Wing

Amidst all the discussion of new ships, pilots and maneuvers, I haven't seen much mention of the extreme variety in obstacle size that is now possible with the new core. Those two smallest asteroid tokens are tiny!

Any idea why the designers decided to include such itty bitty tokens? Just variety for variety's sake? Large ship lists could try to corner the largest obstacles and leave these little buddies for some fairly expansive flying room in the middle of the board.

I like the small rocks

I've heard they're harder to judge than the bigger ones, though I haven't played with them myself yet.

Large ships were not a thing when the first rocks hit the stores. And with lots of large ships coming in waves 7 and 8 I guess they wanted to give the big spenders some love.

My first thought is for swarms.

its really stupid. tying to make the game easier.

and helping 2ship fat meta.

I HATE IT. I HATE THE NEW SET!

You get more big rocks too! Or do those not count?

True that. But you only get parity if the other person WANTS to bring big rocks. and many non-2ship lists still dont enjoy large rocks. I'm kind of the opinion you should now.

Also benefits swarms, which 2ship fatties don't like. Bring a bunch of tiny rocks and "Howlrunner" and her entourage will give zero **** about any effort to break their formation.

HAHAHAHAHA, players actually carrying Assault Missiles on their ships.

You're funny.

hey with Scum y's flying in a group and swarms making a resurgence you just wait! Ruthlessness plus assault missiles!

As much as I appreciate your thought, it doesn't actually work that way.

First, a swarm is much harder to play in a tournament correctly. You have 7 ships, he has 2.

Second, a swarm is reliant on the rocks to push enemy ships onto with blocking and some extra damage. Also they only lose 1/7 of their attack, vs 1/2 of their attack. Also, tie swarms BR through rocks in the formations.

So, in counter. No, this hugely benefits 2 ships only.

Other lists only get marginal help. Anyway, if you're a good player imo, you should use bigger rocks and be certain your opponent will make more mistakes than you.

These tiny rocks make it so that new players can just shove them in corners and forget about them completely.

Small rocks benefit traditional lists more. When a child with ice cream on his face is orbiting his dumb fat turret around an asteroid drawing you into a chase pretending that turrets don't ruin the game, it's easier to deal with if it's not the ******* huge one you're forced to fly around.

Small rocks are buffs to traditional arc based lists and dual IG's. Slight counter to the ultimate in negative play experience ships, Super Dash also.

Large obstacles benefit 10 year olds with ice cream on their faces. Since you can pick a maneuver at random pretty much and always get a shot and then just boost if you're in a sh*tty position with a fat turret, they have no particular need to fly close to asteroids and they've never been much of an issue for fat turrets.

I have named the new smallest rock - One most likely to get lost ...

I'm loving the "child with ice cream on his face" dig.

Seems totally fair that each player gets to pick three obstacles, so size shouldn't be an issue.

The TFA Core also included the monstrosity of an asteroid, and the Raider included big debris.

How long have fat turrets been a thing? You really ought to learn how to deal with it, and lose the whole teenage angst thing.

Well the obstacles now get to the more extremes, you can have 3 small asteroids reducing the impact of terrain or 2 large asteroids and a large debris cloud taking up the most area. It all depends on how much of an impact you want obstacles to have on the playing field. But now players can choose a heavy impact of a slight impact.

Are the huge debris tokens tournament legal? The wording doesn't preclude them....I mean....they ARE debris tokens.....just...huge ones.

Before the new core set, the tourney rules specified the asteroids from the core set or debris fields from the outrider and decimator packs. The debris from the raider was not mentioned as being allowed.

Whether that will change now that there is another core set with different rocks, we do t know.

I wouldn't bet on it though.
