Is SWX36 killing SWX01?

By patox, in X-Wing

Are we about to see the end of life of the OT X-Wing Box? The good ol' Red Logo X-Wing? And is the Blue Box set going to be the only starter set available?

  • The components in the Blue box supersedes the components in the old Red box.
  • They didn't make much effort differentiating the two core sets. Besides the tiny call out and logo color, the two boxes look very similar. The name of the product is also identical on both boxes. (Granted on the FFG website, they call it the Force Awakens Core Set)
  • The two ships from the original core set are available as expansion packs
  • Is there enough shelf space for 2 box sets, and will 2 box sets be too confusing for you new player?
  • Are they really expecting players to buy an obsolete box set and the new one, in order to be up-to-date?

The unique cards that come with the OT Core Set could be included in future T-65 and TIE Fighter expansion packs:

  • Luke Skywalker
  • Biggs Darklighter
  • Mauler Mithel
  • Dark Curse
  • Night Beast
  • R2-D2
  • R2-F2

For goodness sake, this keeps popping up all the time. NO, it's not going to replace it. The first core set's already been reprinted just recently. It's still going to be sold.

No.

No.

This post is literally 100% correct...

Given that the new core clearly is marked "Force Awakens," the original core could still be resold with reference to the OT, perhaps "New Hope" or "Return of the Jedi." They'd only change out the damage cards perhaps.

I think it may be possible in the future that the first core will be harder to find than the TFA core, but it's not going to disappear by any means. And when it's too scarce, I'm sure they'll reprint it again eventually. In a sense, having 2 cores is great because now someone can get 2 cores to start with and won't have much overlap at all between the two. The old core still gives you Luke Skywalker, Biggs, R2-D2, and some unique TIE pilots from the Battle of Yavin. I think the new core is nothing but a boon to new players while the old core isn't going anywhere.

I intend to pick up 2 TFA's myself, 2 damage decks, one for me and any guest opponent, 4 FO ties to use as a miniswarm, 2 T70 X-wings for any guest to use ormyself to play with, even more templates both range and maneuver - these are always good, and even more dice to sling around, as they always seem to end up on one end of the board...

oh, and 2 new roid sets, so epic has more variety.

So far there's only news that it's a 'reprint' and not an update. Of course not putting the new rules and damage deck in the old box would REALLY be dumb.

I think new fans that buy the new box will want to buy the old (perhaps at 35 bucks or something) just to get the cards (Luke! Biggs! R2-D2!!! Mauler Mithel? Who is that?) and cheaper TIEs and X-wings. And an extra set of (updated) templates and range ruler is always nice. And dice.

No, but 7 ate 9.

Why get the original core set when the new set has the better ships and cards?

Why get the original core set when the new set has the better ships and cards?

Points cost, for one. Academy Pilots are still the best.

Simple question, simple answer : no.

Why get the original core set when the new set has the better ships and cards?

Not better. Different.

Because Luke, Biggs, and Artoo are still important?

Nothing quite stops a starter from starting than having to choose between two of them.

A starter set is not Sith. "Alway two there are . . "

My only concern is new players getting into the game won't immediately realize there are 2 different starter sets and won't see there are differences in the ships.

Besides that, there is no reason the old starter set should be made obsolete. FFG pretty much solved this issue by making the new ships cost a new pt value.

Does a new starter "kill" the old one? Not at all although there is a lot of redundancy in them. At least now the "buy two starters" actually makes a lot more sense although the ships in the two are quite different. If you were Rebel I'd say go with the new one and that sexy T-70 but if you're Imperial goes with the tried and true Academy Pilots which you get with the original.

I disagree. There are some games where I really wished they had 2 starters to choose from. BattleLore Second Edition is one of those games. Besides, it's not too different from CCGs where there are dozens of starters. It just gives you more options to choose from and lets you choose the starter that more closely matches your interests. There's nothing wrong with going back and picking up the other starter later.

I think younger players may gravitate towards TFA core set when starting out.

More mature players just starting the game might choose the original Core Set without a pre-existing impression of its contents. I know I would at least. Hard to beat Luke and Vader in the same pack!! ;)

Edit: Whoops, thought Vader came with Core some reason!

At the moment 100% no both sets will be available with only the new damage deck being required for organised play.

In 2 years time when they have sold down this print run who can say.

I would actually rather they killed off the old set sooner rather than later as it is bad enough trying to teach new players as it is, I don't want to have to tell them that they should have got the blue box not the red one if they want to play in my event.

Just my opinion though.

Fear is the path to the Dark Side.

If I'm scared I get cookies...

I would recommend a new player get one of each. There are lots of good reasons to do this.

I'm still on the fence for buying a new core set. I'm sure I will get it eventually but after the Raider and soon to come K-wing, Hounds Tooth, maybe Punisher/Kihraxz Scum X-wing (Also still on the fence for those two), Ghost/Phantom, Advanced Prototype and a bloody Gozanti... My wallet may be a little stretched. But at that point maybe in for a penny in for a pound. Also, Mauler is my favourite TIE fighter pilot. Backstabber is a close second but I'm going for that range 1 shot anyway so Mauler works even inside an arc but... I digress, Mauler is imo a huge benefit to having the OT core not to mention the aforementioned Luke, Biggs and R2-D2.

Other than the damage deck nothing else is necessary (for an officially sanctioned event), correct? New rocks are cool but to be honest I could care less, I'd rather make my own quite frankly.

If FFG was more into doing everything for the fans they'd make a damage deck only expansion pack (and other cards). But FFG is a business that - though awesome and epicSTARWARSgreatnesswowgood - are trying to attract new players from the new films, a smart move in my books. If I do indeed buy one it will be just that, One. I see a lot of people have bought multiple OT cores and plan on buying multiple TFA cores, personally I don't quite get that, I can get a dice expansion which is the only thing I see it needing, but that's just me. My box is overflowing with excess tokens and whatnot, last thing I need is a whole new set of accoutrements to deal with.

Whether or not this new Core affects OT core sales in the long term remains to be seen. But like many others, I don't believe it will entirely kill the OT Core sales, at least right now.
