Is SWX36 killing SWX01?

By patox, in X-Wing

I expect a new starter set for each movie.

GW did it with their Lotr license and made a ton of cash, there is no way FFG haven't looked at GW and thought "looks like a plan".

Pure supposition but maybe v2 comes out when all the movie hubbub has died down, then they can generate more revenue by releasing yet another new set combining the best of everything gone before.

At the moment 100% no both sets will be available with only the new damage deck being required for organised play.

In 2 years time when they have sold down this print run who can say.

I would actually rather they killed off the old set sooner rather than later as it is bad enough trying to teach new players as it is, I don't want to have to tell them that they should have got the blue box not the red one if they want to play in my event.

Just my opinion though.

Why would they not be able to play in your event with the OT box?

As long as there are nerds aged 30+ who have nostalgia for the original trilogy that can be tapped to turn a buck the OG core will have a reason to exist. Hopefully it'll be updated with the new rulebook and damage deck - to be honest, I can't see any reason why FFG wouldn't do that. Some of the alarmist "ZOMG DIZNAY ONLY WANT PEEPLE TOO CARE BOUT THE NOO TRILLYGEE" stuff on this board is approaching tinfoil-hat levels of knee-jerk reactionary nonsense (which I mean as a general point, that's not the tone of the OP here).

I think younger players may gravitate towards TFA core set when starting out.

More mature players just starting the game might choose the original Core Set without a pre-existing impression of its contents. I know I would at least. Hard to beat Luke and Vader in the same pack!! ;)

Already got my Episode 7 starter set because it will be a requirement soon enough. We just got to wait for FFG to spill the beans and since they are tip-toeing around Disney in handling this it has been rather frustrating. I mean the whole thing just came out without any official word from FFG and it was tied into the whole mass consumer door-buster release of all of Episode 7 merchandising scheme.

however unlike the original core set I would not get second one for

  1. I am hopeful that FFG smartens up and sells the damage deck separately in which I would happily get an additional one (one of the reasons I got 2 core sets was to have an additional damage deck to invite a friend to play) and..
  2. This can happen again and sooner than one thinks. I know we don't think that a new core set will be released each movie but it can easily be decided to make a new set and we will start all over.

I hope that they keep X-wing as one big game and don't split it into OT X-wing and ep VII-IX X-wing. Heck at this point if they bring in the prequels I would gladly take N-1s and fly them with TIE Phantoms.

There's a lot of certainy here, I didn't know so many FFG employees posted on these boards.

The damage decks are different and from January 1st the new deck will be required for Organised Play. All other components will still be valid so you could still take the Asteroids from the Red Core Set but you will 100% need a Blue Set damage deck as of January 1st, if you want to play in an event.

I could be convinced that it is viable and healthy for the game to keep both sets around as long as they include the new damage deck in the old set, but seeing as the print run that was recently completed is the old deck I am not holding my breath.

To be honest I don't really mind either way but I do think only having one core set with all of the up to date stuff in it is the best, most streamline solution.

Whatever happens I will be picking up at least one new one (more likely two) and as I already have 4 of the old sets I am sure I will live.

Kris

Once the change the damage deck I think purchasing both Cores is the best option. Right now we tell new players to get two cores for the value. Now it should be one of each. Give a variety of asteroids, pilots and upgrades plus the additional dice, rulers and rules.

Two OG cores is really something I'll only suggest if a player is really, really, really, dead set on playing swarm TIEs.

I have 9 ties. and I realize that for what I want to do with a campaign/list for epic I might actually not have enough till i buy 2 gozantis.

The option to field a swarm is always nice.
