Playing Certain Upgrades

By miker42, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I have a few questions about upgrades.

I figure in order to be fairly competitive you would want certain upgrades for the ships that you own. Since many upgrades are not ship specific, are you allowed to announce you are playing a particular upgrade card if you do not actually have it?

Since you can see all the various upgrades available on various sites across the interwebs, are you allowed to make your own cards or just jot down the pertinent stats and use them in building squadrons with the ships you own even though the upgrade is only available in an expansion you don't own?

Is that considered a no-no or uncool?

In a tournament or sanctioned event, no. You have to have all of the cards for all pilots and upgrades in your list, and they have to be legitimate copies.

In a casual setting, the answer can vary. It's really up to your opponent, but I think most people would be accommodating (and may even let you borrow their cards, if they've got extras handy). Just ask beforehand, and have a backup list planned that you do have all the cards for in case they don't want to play with proxy cards.

What about if you own a card? Can you have multiple ships use that upgrade if you still only have one of the cards, or does there have to be a separate card for each ship using a particular upgrade?

If in a formal tournament or sanctioned event, you need one physical copy for each copy of a card in your list- so separate cards for each ship.

People have a strange attachment to seeing the actual cards in this game. They insist on you having the card, but will gladly hand it to you to use before a match or tournament starts. How that is any different than you not having the card is beyond me, but they have the advantage of being supported by the rules of the game.

Personally if it was just a casual game amongst friends or gaming community I would allow people to play upgrades that they do not own even cards that have yet to be released.

However in tournament play I am more inclined to say if you do not have the cards you cannot play it.

In the Regionals that has just been in NZ I noticed that 1 player did not have all their cards for their build (he had 60% of his cards). lucky for him, he didn't face me otherwise I would go to the TO and asked if he can play with his limited build.

Although I think this is a D... move there has been many in store tournaments where I have been pulled up for not having the correct upgrade cards, or the correct pilot cards. My motto is you play with what you have and not make builds outside of what you own.

One means the card is present if someone needs to reference it. The other means it is not present if someone needs to reference it.

X wing is not an expensive game. The trick is that if you want to equip your Punisher Squadron with ECM pods, you must purchase 4 Lambdas. Colect your cards, put your printer to work and buy the ships you love. If you a Tournament...their house, their rules

Thanks for all the good answers. Still, I'd like to see a way where you could get all the "cool" upgrades without having to spend a fortune on ships. There are some I just don't want like the scum and villainy but some of the cards may be useful. I guess that's ultimately up to FFG. Another route (if you are good enough miniatures painter) would be to buy the ship, keep the cards, do a custom repaint and then sell it. Then maybe you could recoup your cost and maybe make a little extra.

I would assume a brilliant tactician would fair well against an opponent who relies on certain upgrades to be competitive anyway. I suppose it boils down to how you play the cards you have.

I know Team Covenant at least sells individual upgrade cards on their webstore.

I've looked there but honestly I haven't played enough yet to know which ones would be beneficial.

You can always proxy cards for casual/test games to decide what upgrades you want.

There are various option available online to reference a card. Besides, not having a card does not mean that the player does not have the relevant text.
