Pass Rule VS. The 4x4

By bdshow, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

Just wondering if anyone has seen the effects of the new rule against the 4x4? I'm not a fan of this list just for sheer fun sake. I come from playing heroclix where those kind of "cheap" feeling teams are irritating to see over and over. Granted there are a few hundred more figures in Heroclix.

8 Royal Guards on the board is still pretty formidable even with the new rule, but it has helped a little bit overall. I still see most people I play against aiming for 6-7 activations so the pass rule doesn't change the game much. It definitely has helped the 4-5 activation lists become more viable. Being able to place figures in position after seeing where your opponent moves move is really valuable. Before the new rule the royal guards would get a lot of attacks the first(or second) round and not receive any attacks themselves against low activation lists. This isn't the case anymore unless someone plays really well.

I know that after seeing the effects of the new rule I have tried a lot more 5 activation lists and continue to build them instead of looking at only high activation lists.

5 is kind of where I was heading. There are so many great "theme teams" that simply can't be played due to cheap generics out actioning. That being said I am all for good team building no matter what it is, I just hate seeing the same builds played by a majority. I don't think this is be case anymore thankfully though.

I played 4x4 (Player 1) against Vader, Elite Officer, Royal Guard, Elite Stormtroopers (Player 2) recently. The activation count was not the problem anymore.

Turn 1:

Player 2: Pass

Player 1: Officer: Move, Order

Player 2: Pass

Player 1: Officer: Move, Order

Player 2: Pass

Player 1: Officer: Move, Order

Player 2: Pass

Player 1: Officer: Move, Order

Player 2: Stormtroopers: Move, Move

Player 1: Royal Guard: Move, Move

Player 2: Royal Guard: Move, Move

Player 1: Royal Guard: Move, Attack

Player 2: Officer: Move, Order

Player 1: Royal Guard: Move, Attack

Player 2: Vader: Move, Attack

Player 1: Royal Guard: Move, Attack

Turn 2:

Player 1: Royal Guard: Move, Attack

Player 2: Vader: Attack, Choke

Player 1: Royal Guard: Move, Attack

Player 2: Officer: Move, Order

Player 1: Royal Guard: Move, Attack

Player 2: Royal Guard: Move, Attack

Player 1: Royal Guard: Move, Attack

Player 2: Stormtroopers: Move, Attack

Player 1: Officer: Move, Attack

Player 1: Officer: Move, Attack

Player 1: Officer: Move, Attack

Player 1: Officer: Move, Move

...

The 4x4 won, but not as dominant as usual. It was a fair game.

Before passing was allowed, on turn 1 the Vader list would have been done activating before the first Royal Guard of the 4x4 would have activated. The 4x4 was able to position itself on the first half of turn 1 and then strike hard on the second half of turn 1 without any retaliation. These times are over ... and it is good.

The 4x4 is still great. Regular Imperial Officers as well as regular Royal Guards are two of the best units in this game. Board control, speed, tough, hard hitting ... it's still powerful, but not as overpowered as it used to be ...

I'd like to see the officers move ability changed similar to Gideon's- 2 spaces.

There are a few (fan-)articles about possibilities to "fix" the officers.

Change the order ability to Gideons ability, or make them 3 points are popular suggestions. Both would work, but we won't see anything like that.

I'm still waiting to play an imperial list adding in Fett with Officers.

I'm new to skirmish. 4X4 is 4 imp officers and 4 regular royal guard deployment cards (8 figures). Wouldn't that require purchasing 4 base sets? I get it, it's only money but four base sets seems egregious. Guess you'd get your practice painting stormtroopers though. Apologies for deviating off topic.

Yes, 4 cores, very expensive. It was the dominate wave 1 list, but as more and more stuff is released, and now with the pass rule you will see less and less of it. As it will no longer offer enough of a competitive advantage to justify the cost.
