Thank you all for your insights, excellent stuff.

Yeah, "enjoy" is top of my list; it's such a fun game even at the scale we've been playing.

If you are aiming to play with your family and friends, there's nothing wrong with flying a bunch of X-Wings and A-Wings against some TIE Fighters and Interceptors. Everyone knows them, it's thematic, and it's fun.

If you were to branch into other ships beyond OT, there are some that I consider not far off from the movies. The Z-95 Headhunter, for instance, is famous from the X-Wing video game, and the HWK-290 is popular from some other old video games like Dark Forces. The Z-95 would be my first suggestion were you to grab anything beyond movie ships. But yes, even the core set starter games can be lots of fun. Try the missions listed in the back of the rulebook if you haven't, they also add a neat dimension to the game!

The only hard and fast rule in this game- the one thing we will kick you out of the club for violating- is that you _must_ say "pew pew pew" when rolling dice. At least once per game. No exceptions.

See we're a bit more techy

we have this on the laptop in the background and particulaly good shots, ship destructions or amazing manouvres get the appropriate sound effect played... only really cool shots etc though or it would take all day.

The page you want is the xwing vs tie fighter sound effects page.

Fickle green has the right of it. As do all the people telling you to proxy unowned cards. For kitchen table play, it's totally fine.

If you end up going to your FLGS to play, you probably can still get away with proxying cards in a friendly scrim- but do think about buying something from the store as a table tax. :)

If you're an OT-only guy, we're probably about the same age (mid/late 30s). Can I recommend you watch the Rebels show? It has a similar feel as the OT (it's even set about 2 or 3 years before Yavin), and is the basis for a new Wave of forthcoming ships.

It's also an awesome show just for its own sake. I'm not actually expecting Ep7 to be good, but as long as we keep having Rebels, I'm ok with that.

Funnily enough i was going to say that i consider rebels to be OT-ish and the ghost is far more 'star wars' than say the 'hounds tooth'

As for games at the FLGS, I currently live in London where such things don't really exist, but all being well I'm moving to California at the end of the month and should be able to find a spot there.

Where in CA? I'm living in Santa Monica right now, but can recommend some good Bay Area FLGSs if that's where you're at. :)

Yeah, Bay Area. Not sure where yet, maybe Lamorinda or north Berkeley, though I'll be working in SF. I remember popping into a really nice game store in central Berkeley once, right by the BART, but they didn't seem the game night type; didn't appear to have the layout for it.

I read the x wing books about 300000000 years ago so this game kind of got me back into the EU (which doesn't exist any more :) ). I like to run movie canon trench runs every now and then just to keep it pure (working on hoth).

I if you end up playing at the local game shop they will suck you into getting lots of extras just to be competitive but that is a whole different world :)
Enjoy the game

Thanks for starting this post. I'm in a similar position and planning to play through the early waves of the game, enjoying its development. You've unearthed a mine of information thanks to the replies from helpful members. The plan for our little group is to buy the ships we like and proxy cards (but only wave by wave), and to explore the missions side of the game.

Sounds like this might be viable.

Going wave by wave is a good move. If you start now its very easy to be swamped by the sheer number or options and the combinations they can be used in.

You appreciate 'autothusters' more if you play some games with turreted ships *before* using them :)

If you like OT and only want to play OT then the classic core sets should be suitable, however you would need 2 core sets for two players to play so one for yourself and one for your wife.

However I will advise that the standard play that has been greatly influenced by competitive events such as Worlds and many other players copy list such as those that won nationals. You can count on them having Episode 7 stuff and beyond, and also their newer damage deck may will give them an advantage as they will start to build for it. So if you want to play with others at your local gaming store you can expect a much different experience.

the idea of going wave by wave is a great idea as you will learn the pilots and cards 1 by 1 rather than a mass info over load with all the possible combinations out there at the moment

I only found out about this game about 6 months ago. Now I have $1000+ worth of ships. Once the bug hits, it hits hard. I jumped straight in head first, but I can totally agree with your approach and easing into it. Having so many ships can get a little overwhelming and wave by wave acquisition would have been smart to learn the basics first.

I'm an OT fella. I have read a lot of the EU novels and played countless hours of SW games (including Masters of Terris kassi). I've been chasing the SW universe that I fell in love with. I loved the X-Wing and Tie Fighter PC series, KOTOR series and enjoyed the X-Wing novels back in the day (Stackpole only, Alliston's were written for cats). Outside if these, the EU was total dross. All of it. I got pumped for Clone Wars .. disappointed. I got pumped for Rebels .. I tried to like it .. but it's not the SW universe I like. It's not my personal canon.

I only own OT ships. I won't ever buy an EU ship. Watching those little ships hammer aroundthe table blazing each other fills my

SW love tanks. It adheres to my canon.

Friend, fly what you want, with the upgrades you want. That's the best way to play this game. Also, check your inbox tomorrow, i'll shoot you some goodies.

I say play what you want and have fun with it. Don't worry too much about what people on these boards say as most of them are the hard core tournament types. While people bash the X-wing, it's only in relation to the highest tournament play. If you still feel like it's not doing well, I'd probably just give it the Boost ability and you would do fine.

I'd also recommend looking at the various scenarios. There is a website FFG runs called Mission Control. You can look through thousands of missions and look at the best ones, as well. Babaganoosh writes some of the best and keeps a thread around with some of his favorites. I think it's a way to keep the game interesting. You will also find the X-wing does better in missions where speed and firepower is needed. The B-wing is more durable for the same price, but slow. The A-wing is faster, but doesn't hit as hard.

Ah, interesting. We've really enjoyed the objective-based play in IA, so I'll definitely take a look; thanks.

Both my wife and I too are brand new here...I just bought 2 X-Wing Core Sets and the millennium falcon expansion, so my questions are as follows

1) What else do I "need" to get started? I've been watching a bunch of You Tube videos on the basic game play. I want to make sure we have FUN playing. What size table should I get for our office/game/battle room?

2) Can I combine the original X-Wing Core set with the new Core Set coming out? (are there rules against this)

Any and all suggestions are welcome.

Welcome aboard, sir!!

First off, all ships within the same factions or sub-factions can be combined, so yes, the new The Force Awakens core set X-Wings and TIEs can combine with the original ones under the Empire or Rebel Alliance to fight together. However, you should not combine the damage decks as they are different. Otherwise, everything can be mixed within factions (obviously, no combining separate factions to fly X-Wings and TIEs on the same side). I highly recommend a copy of the new Core, as it has all of the updated rules since the game's release, and a helpful glossary breaking down the terms associated with every aspect of the game.

Second, I would look into another large Imperial ship to balance out the points-totals between your Rebel and Imperial fleets. It will make it easier to face off a couple X-Wings and the Falcon against a few TIE Fighters and a Decimator or Slave I, for instance. After that, just buy expansions that look like fun (and keep watching Youtube videos that review ships etc. in order to help you decide). If it's financially manageable, you can get the best deals off of online sites like Miniature Market or CoolStuffInc with free shipping on orders over $100.

Lastly, the standard play size is 3' x 3'. If you want to get fun and fancy, there are official and third-party starfield and other space-themed playmats which add a nice dimension to the game.

@KTreu42 - thank you very much for your input. I was leaning towards the Slave 1, but I will have to take a look at the Decimator for a good balance on the Imperial side.

Firespray is more Scum anyway. ;)

Welcome to the game!

My fiancée and I play each other regularly now as its such an addictive game. Be warned though, the plastic "crack" is highly addictive and soon you won't have enough storage space and a sore wallet!

I see a lot of fellas playing this game with their wives and girlfriends. My friends, I tried playing strip x-wing with my wife once. Seemed like a good idea, so I turned up the heat and we rolled dice together.

Things were looking good until the green dice turned on me. Admittedly, standing there naked, playing with little Star Wars plastic toys is not as awesome as it sounds ... Not. At. All.

While this applies to any cards that show up in expansions, I think it's particularly applicable to Y-Wings. As a bit of a hardcore Y-Wing player, I feel they are kind of defined by what they take for the turret slot, and possibly for ordnance, so to get the most out of them I would print out proxy cards for the other turrets and ordnance if you want to use them. Same goes for astromechs and well, any other upgrade in the game, as pretty much everything has been scanned online by now and can be printed out.

Ion Cannon Turret comes with the Y-Wing itself, whereas Autoblaster Turret, Twin Laser Turret, and Blaster Turret all come in different expansions. For ordnance, I think it already comes with Proton Torpedoes, but you might also want to try Ion Torpedoes, Flechette Torpedoes, Plasma Torpedoes, and Bomb Loadout (although bomb tokens could be tricky to deal with).
