YT-1300 with SLAM

By Rogue Dakotan, in X-Wing

I'm just finishing up one of the new Journey to The Force Awakens books, Smuggler's Run. It's a young adult novel but it's pretty ok. Smugglers_Run.png

"He pushed the throttles forward, feeling the Falcon surge, and slapped the illegal SLAM activator he'd installed to give the ship an additional burst of speed."

So the Falcon has a SLAM drive. That's canon.

Before anyone starts whining about canon and Legends and all that, just don't. :P

Also the YT-1300 in X-Wing doesn't need any fixes or changes or anything like that. I'm not suggesting that.

I just wanted to have a little thought experiment about how silly it would be if the YT-1300 came with a SLAM action and what that would be like. NOT THAT IT SHOULD HAVE ONE, but what if?

Large base SLAM would be pretty cool, but it kind of wouldn't do much. The Falcon can't use A-SLAM to drop Mines. It would be entirely defensive. What I would take from this would be the idea of an illicit SLAM upgrade, would be crazy on Emon.

Why should i even want to sacrifice shooting on han to slam?

That is very interesting. I've been throwing a little party every time a tiny piece of the EU pops up. Was SLAM canon on any ship before this?

That's hilarious, good catch RogueLieutenant, and great to see a little bit of the EU pop up!

only if the SLAM drive took up the mod slot to eat up EU

otherwise, all it'd do is make Han even more impossible to catch when he m.o.v whores you

To my knowledge this is the first time SLAM has showed up in the new canon material.

Sabine crew might change that.

A modification that adds the SLAM action would be interesting. Wonder if it would cost more than 4 points or not....

And if it was a mod, that would mean no taking Advanced Slam as well, since that's a mod, right? I haven't gotten my K-Wing on the board yet.

If it's illegal, that'd make it Scum... and since Han is one of the Good Guys, then well...

:D

Just out of interest, when is the novel set?

The prologue and epilogue take place around the time of The Force Awakens with Old-Man-Han, but he's telling a story, so the main story is a flashback so to speak that takes place sometime between ANH and ESB.

Thanks! Hmmm, looking at the Wikipedia entry for the SLAM drive, it's referenced in the "Millennium Falcon Owner's Manual", so this book's not the only source for this little tidbit.

Mind you, if that's the time period we're looking at then Han would have had one source for them - Imperial research labs or Missile Boats. Either that or he's telling some tall tales, that lovable old rogue.

True, the bulk of the book is technically just him telling a story in a bar. Some embellishments can be expected. :)

Make it a mod, and make it 3 points to encourage it over Engine Upgrade. Then we get a few rounds without the turret firing.

For a brief time, one Missile Boat was in possession of some rebels or rebel sympathizers until it was recovered/destroyed.

The timeline fits, aboutish. Really it happens before ROTJ, not before TETB, but...

Well ok, for given values of "interesting".

I'm just picturing SLAM on Corran. Just SLAM away the round you're already not able to shoot. Yeesh.

Stop it, you are giving me nightmares!

Oh by all means skip your shooting so you can fly off the board, 100% hobo approved!

I think it would be way too powerful. You could 4 straight twice in a round. Say you are about to get pinned in by a swarm, nope. I'm on the other side of the board now.

Would R2 regen off both? Sounds...like an awful idea.

Haha oh man. I think we've made a pretty clear case why a SLAM modification can never be a thing lol. Unless it has a everyone except Corran Horn restriction lol.

That goes for a lot of upgrades, doesn't it. "xxxx" would be great, except put it on Corran Horn (or Biggs) and it breaks the game.

SLAM on the Falcon seems like it might occasionally be useful as a GTFO when Han finds himself facing a big ordnance alpha, but probably not better than EU overall.
