Has anybody tried playing games with just the small ships? I know it would be a custom game but interested to see if anybody has tried it out. I like the idea of have a mass TIE / X Wing battle
) Doing a basic run through I see that 250pts would give you 25 squadrons of Imperials. This would be 9 TIE Squadrons, 1 Sontir Fel, 5 Advanced TIE squadrons and 9 Interceptor squadrons. Perhaps if going for bigger points you could group the stands in to groups of 3 to represent a single squadron.
Just small ships
Do you mean squadrons, or small ships like the Corvettes and the Nebs ?
Sorry, squadrons, as in just TIEs & X Wings, etc
Edited by WolfstanThe Bomber ability would be totally useless and most Rebel squads have them.
Have you tried playing X-Wing? It's a good game too. It'll scratch that fighter-versus-fighter itch better than just playing with Armada squads. ![]()
I have thought about it, but one of thereasons I went from X-wing to Armada was the correction of squadrons. In X-wing everything is dogfighting, but Armada captures the feel of a battle because of bombers, which X-wing does not have. Although I must admit, come wave two I toally hope to try Armada Battlefront 2. In which I will have
Imp2
Glad1 Glad1
CR-90 CR-90
MC-80
All ships would be immoble and no defense token, commands, or Anti-ship Attacks. But all shields must be taken down to attack a ship and are all combined. So a Tie Bomber could sit on the starboard side of a CR-90, but would have to get through 7 shields before attacking the hull.
Fighters Are deployed in waves from distance 2 of Imp Star destroyer or MC-80:
Wave 1 - X-wing A-wing Y-wing and something from Rogues (probobly a YT) Tie fighter Tie Interceptor Tie Bomber some thing from Rogues.
Wave 2 - X-wing A-wing Tie Fighter Tie Interceptor
Wave 3 - X-wing Y-wing Tie Fighter Tie Bomber
Wave 4 - X-wing A-wing Y-wing Tie Fighter Tie Interceptor Tie Bomber
Repeat waves 1-4 for rest of the game.
Game ends when set amount of points is reached. Seeing as each ship grants one 4 points inSWBF2, I would say at least 540 points seeing as it is 180 in SWBF2.
Of course I haven't played it, but I look forward to playing it and seeing how it needs to be changed.
Edited by FelswrathMakes me wonder what builds would look like if 1/3 of the point total could only be spent on fighters. It would make for more iconic Star Wars fleets.

Someone should make a game with just the fighters!

No I think he wants more of a squadron based game. X-Wing has always felt more as a fighter on fighter snap shot of a battle and less of a squadron game to me
I see what you did there. . .

Thats why you should play Epic!

Or, if you had to take as many Squadrons as you had in total of Squadron ratings in your fleet.
I'm running four CR90's, I need to take exactly four Squadrons of my choice. Think I'll take A-wings for their speed.
X Wing is fine, but to get the film / dynamic 'feel' that I'm after would take a lot of ships, cost a lot of money and be too cumbersome to work properly. It's why I also thought of combining the stands in to groups of 3 as well, other wise that's 25 individual stands that you have to deal with tactically.
Considering that there were really not that many squadrons used in the original films, I am curious on why people feel that there should be an overwhelming amount of fighters and squadrons on the board.

You can try with full squadrons fleets for fun, but I'm not sure it's going to be a cool experience because the game isn't based around that. You have to remember that squadrons aren't 3 ships only, but 8 to 12 fighters ![]()
On topic:
I've gone up to 1/2 fighters in a few narrative things, but I ended up giving 'hero' squadrons impromptu commands (1 Squadron token per turn) to make things a little more tactical in select areas by making things feel focused. I like Felswrath's idea though in the 'Battlefront 2' mission.
Off-topic... ish
I'll preface this by admitting that I don't like much of the EU, and while I might know more than some casual fans, I'm still definitely in the casual department for Star Wars.
Through the original trilogy, fighters pulled duty as being the important parts in the space fighting within the films in which they are present. It's not to say that they were the only part -in fact, Empire Strikes Back had the Imperial-class as some of the most active elements of the navy- but when it came to the fighting, squadrons were the heroes. Just look at the battle of Endor, the rebel ships were 'mill around and get shot at' while the Imperial line of battle's orders were 'blocking positions only'. They were set pieces, nothing else (and set pieces frequently shown getting mauled by fighters).
Then we get to numbers: Armada represents the nebulous concept of 'squadrons' through 3 fighter models per base. Some people (like me*) like the notion that it represents 3-4 ships in a flight, and 'squadrons' are a name used to differentiate it as a cohesive unit from 'ships' ('the snubfighter phase' sounds weird on a professional level). Even if we think of squadrons as paper strength, each stand represents 12ish ships. Now we look at the numbers in Jedi. Source books say there was 850 rebel fighters, and while I despise just about everything about that number, we do know that it wasn't red, gold, green, and grey squadrons (at minimum, not including blue/"blade"). They were designated as red, gold, green, and grey 'group' and stated as such multiple times in the movie (while 'squadron' was never mentioned). Assuming the real-life benchmark in squadrons and fighter groups, that's still 3:1, representing at least a paper strength minimum of 144 rebel fighter craft at Endor (more if we go by the British terminology in which a group is equivilant to a 'wing', or about 8-10 squadrons, meaning up to 480 craft)
Then we can go into the simple psychology touched on earlier. A starfighter is an extension of the pilot: they're knights, heroes, easily recognized individuals. Ships might have a personality, a reputation, or even the 'will' of its commander, but its still run by faceless hordes of people. It just feels more cinematic, and Star Wars was a series that really upped the typical level of heroic cinema past being about named stars, and into a spectacle piece. A lot of the games and accessible media portrayed fighters as the deciding factors in Star Wars battles. Think X-wing, Tie Fighter, even Rebel Assault and then the next generation in Rogue Squadron, the heroic roles were the fighters. Given those were some of the biggest games to come out of the post acid-trip 'on screen' replications of Star Wars (IE Super Star Wars), star fighters are intrinsically linked with the property. Just like, to my dismay, the glow-stick hordes of space monks are inextricably linked to the property thanks to the prequels
Tl;dr: it's only natural that some people will want this, given that it's Star Wars.
*shout 'till you're blue in the face if you want, I won't convert to your 4:1 model dogma! ![]()

That's what I thought at first, but with the release of info about Rogues and Villains, I am starting to think that it realy is just 3 fighters in a "squadron".
P.S. No I do not have any extra info than "Here they Come" and that French (I think) article with the Moldy Crow and Slave One.

I like to think of them as 4 fighters, or two pairs of a lead and a wingman, and termed as a flight in the X-wing books. Fits my head cannon better ![]()
