Won a store tournament with a Hutt Cartel on Sunday...

By FTS Gecko, in X-Wing

...where is your 2-ship meta now??! (joke)

3 x Cartel Marauders

2 x Cartel Spacers with Heavy Scyk and Mangler Cannons

16 players, 5 rounds of Swiss. Really fun day, everyone was having a great time, playing in the spirit of the game and having a good laugh.

It was unnerving putting down just one shield token on each ship at the start of the games, but the Kihraxz and Scyks have good dials, which helped a huge amount. I don't think I faced another generic pilot at all during the 5 games apart from Han's escort, so I was essentially resigned to moving first and shooting last, which became a bit of a blessing in disguise actually.

The three Kihraxz flew in formation, and tried to draw attention away from the Scyks, who slow rolled after them or flanked to shoot from long range. As all my ships shot at the same pilot skill, I'd try to shoot with the Marauders first to strip shields, then force through critical hits with the Scyks. As all the ships also activated at the same pilot skill, I could pick and choose the movement order and use any of them to block if necessary (which was a BIG help).

I played a good range of lists including

Corran Horn, Biggs, Jan Ors

Chinereau & Soontir Fel

Han Solo, 3 x Bandits

Chewie, Kyle Katarn and Airen Cracken

Kath Scarlett & TLT Kavil

There were quite a few nail biting moments, the last two games in particular with Chris and Rob were really close with a lot of potentially game changing moments where the momentum swung back and forth.

I lost on average 2.5 ships a game, but only lost three Scyks all day if I remember rightly? (I think only one player prioritised the Scyks from the start).

Big thanks to the guys at Element Games in Stockport who put on a great event, to designated driver Ashley (who came top four with dual TIE Advanced and a Palpmobile as well) and to everyone who played for a really fun day of X-Wing!

How was TLT Kavil? I've been meaning to give that a try.

Also: your list makes me think scum ace pack.

GOooo Hutts!

Full of nasty tricks! Kavil didn't just have the TLT, he had Proton Bomb, Extra Munitions, Genius and Engine Upgrade as well - Robert pulled off an amazing trick shot with a three bank, Proton Bomb, then boost away which caught two of my Kihraxz napping and finished off one - fortunately for me the other one drew injured pilot.

The TLT was impressive, consistently doing damage, even when Kavil didn't have a focus or target lock to modify the attack (4 attack dice TLT meant that Kavil didn't have to rely on attack modifiers, and could instead arc dodge or move out to range three with boost instead).

Congratulations.

Nice squad! Sounds like a good one to try.

I applaud it when people take unique/original list to shows and do well with them

THIS is what breaks up stale meta, not new cards or nerfs or buffs.

One guy with good taste that's not smearing ice cream on his face with a fat turretwing list or one based around Super Corran is not enough to change the meta.

For every one guy like OP or Kath Kavil bomb guy, there are 3 bad tasters who think they outplayed someone's Chewy Leebo with their Dash Miranda.

No but it means that when someone in that tournament doing well with a list with something considered 'crap ' like the Scyk it makes them think twice that they need to take brobots to win.

I popped into my local store to put a pre order in for the new core set and there seemed to be a tournament on that day.

I saw the first three tables... all YV666 and IG2000, or double IG2000.

I was pretty glad i wasnt playing as it looked like everyone took the same thing :)

No YV-666's yesterday, unfortunately, as I would have liked to see how they got on. There were a couple of twin IG2000's though.

One table had twin IGs versus YV666 and three Z95s

another had twin IGs versus YV666 and one IG2000

the other i caught a glance at had some variation of the above.

It didnt look very interesting to play in tbh....

There was quite a lot of variation at the event yesterday. In addition to the above Ashley fielded Darth, Juno and an Omicron with Palpatine, and I can remember seeing a Scum 2 x Firespray list, an XXXZZ list and a Decimator/Punisher...

For those interested, here's a quick overview of the lists at our event:

1st (5-0): Kihraxz & scyks

2nd (4-1): Chewie, Kyle & Cracken (no TLT)

3rd (4-1): Kavil, Palob, Guri (2x TLT) (this was me as support TO making up the numbers as spare player, so discounted from final standings)

4th (3-2): Kavil & Kath (TLT, HLC and plenty of bombs)

5th (3-2): Vader, Juno & palpmobile

6th (3-2): Han (gunner/3po) & bandits

7th (3-2): RAC/Fel

8th (2-2-1): Brobots

9th (2-3): Corran, Jake & Biggs

10th (2-3): Han, Blue & Rookie

11th (2-3): Boba, Kath & Kihraxz

12th (2-3): XXXZZ (Garven, Red, Rookie, Tala, Bandit)

13th (2-3): RAC/Redline

14th (1-4): Keyan, Corran, Gemmer (I think)

15th (1-4): Corran, Jan, Biggs

16th (0-4-1): Brobots

Cheers Ben, and thanks again for organising a really fun day of X-Wingery!

Trust me Gadge, that tournament was a lot more varied than any other I'd seen there.

I stopped doing tournaments there when I played 3 in a row, and played the same people with the same lists 3 times running.

Lot of S&V from what i could see in a couple of mins just popping in though, and similar looking lists.

What else were people fielding?

Well it wasn't wall to wall YT1300 and IG88s, so a definite improvement over normal!

Can't put it up to FFG though to try and change human nature. Meta is what it is because they say/heard something do awesome and it wasn't super hard, so they go with it. If there was a way to encourage people to think outside the box...

You promote list variation in a stagnant meta with new cards or buffs or nerfs. If Gage had his way we would have never gotten the Phantom nerf.

I don't now who 'Gage' is but clearly new cards do help but actually what you really need to do is break the sheep like mentality of a lot of players by showing them that more diverse lists DO work, not just what you've been told works on a forum or have been told will fix or nerf something for you.

There are plenty of good combinations that work out there but tourny centric forums like this get people obsessed that one thing is world beating.

I found phantoms a bit boring to be honest and somewhat annoying but i dealt with them fine as they were by varying my lists and my tactics.

If you can handle phantoms with X wings and Y wings and well dispersed arcs you dont need to wet your pants and cry for a 'nerf' :)

Which will just promote a new meta, that in time will also stagnate.

If these waves (raider, 7, and core II) mix up the meta then that will be awesome. I'm so over fat PWTs.

Sounds like Ben is a cool critter.

Some of us play like it is AD&D Super STAR WARS... never gets boring here at Boss Central... prolly Gadge, & Geckos' spot too.

No BORE...ING's! HERE!

DAT!
