Rebel without a potato

By Oxymandias, in Star Wars: Armada Fleet Builds

Hi there,

I have gotten started with Armada some months ago, and I fly the Imps, but need to build a fun and manageable Rebel list to offer my friends so they also get hooked! :-)

Could I have some suggestions for a 300 p Rebel fleet without the space potato Mark II?

I have 2 Core sets and some expansions, my rebel minis are:

3 Nebulons

3 Corvettes

Tons of X-wing squads and all the squads from the Rebel Fighter Squadrons upgrade pack.

Regarding Upgrade Cards I mainly play casual so I don't mind the odd proxy for testing a list.

Appreciate any suggestions!

You've got tonnes of options with that amount of stuff. Just have a mess around with a fleet builder or even better just let your friends do it. Fleet building is part of the fun for me.

I was in the same boat up until a few weeks ago. Honestly you can go with a 3 or 4 ship build and pepper with fighters and upgrades. Only downside is he'll have to fly fast and furious without the survivability the Whale brings.

I ran a 2 Neb and 2 Vette list with mixed results. I think it's more about my piloting abilities than the ships with that.

I think I'll fly the rebels myself, believe the Star Destroyers are easier for beginners. Or?

I'm looking at something like this:

Mon Mothma on a Nebulon

3 x Corvette w Countermeasures

Squads for the remaining points.

VSD's allow you to just march forward and take hits. Easier than a no AF Rebel fleet IMO. And they have a lot of powerful upgrades for the offensive playstyle.

You really don't want to buy an Assault Frigate mk II?

You have so many squadrons and the B type is the only thing Rebels can field that has a squadron value of 3. And the Mk II is the only Rebel ship that can take expanded hangar bays too.

If I play competetively I'll fly my Imps, the rebel build is mainly something I put together with available ships to have friends try the game (and then I might play rebs or imps, doesn't matter).

I'll get MC80 and MV30 soon, so I hope I won't have to buy the whale. :-)

I fly a double double NebB & CR90 list with fighter support, it's a daunting thing to do at times with a steep learning curve, and does take some serious work to fly well.

That being said, if you're really wanting to build a 300pt list as a friendly teaching/learning/gateway build, you might reconsider on the Space Guppy MK2. It's just a much more forgiving and simpler ship to fly and learn with.

Even adding in the MC80 and 30 isn't going to be that much of an easier proposition for a learning game, as the MC30 is another fragile hot rod, that also presents some of the same challenges the NebB presents when it comes to flying and keeping the arc you need pointed at the enemy. And the very high cost and slower speeds of the MC80, as well as those broadside arcs, also seem to be another steep learning curve type project.

The way I see it, is if you're trying to get someone excited about this game, it might behoove you to give in and buy the AssFrig, and let your buddies have something a little easier to learn with instead of taking the chance that they get frustrated at how difficult it can be to use the smaller ships.

The flying space potato expansion is the only way to get the Advanced Projectors and Point Defense Reroute upgrades.

Though you could always print them off and proxy them. You could proxy the AF2 as well if you are not using all your Victory bases. That way you can see how you like it without spending the scratch.

If your friends like the game they may end up buying their own ships. The Mark II with the Gallant Haven title can really support squadrons.

The price of the mediums is a bit of a bother when you are trying to buy enough for 2 players. I picked up my AF2 for 60% off msrp, I wasn't planning on it but it was too good of a deal to wait. Right now they are 30% off on Amazon, maybe they'll drop again.
