Hi, my friends and I recently started playing x-wing and have been looking for different game types. Do any of you know of different ways to play other than "x number of points per person/side"? Your ideas are appreciated.
Different game types?
Not really. Even in scenario missions official or unofficial, you always have the same points on each side. The core sets both include scenario missions, there are somega in large ship expansions and huge ship expansions and the community has come up with some decent ones as well.
I don't think he was asking for asymetric point limits, although a number of the official scenarios do actually have them.
Every large box expansion apart from Most Wanted has at least 1 mission. You can also find community made scenarios, campaigns, and guides to making your own such things if you dig around a bit.
Edited by SquarkYou don't have to use 100 point except at official events.
The start game is 31 points (pg.18) and a 2 ft by 2 ft play area.
and the Squad Building section using 100 points is considered "Advanced Rules."
We play anything from 100 to 300 points, usually around 140.
One of us makes a build, passes on the point total, and the other matches the points.
Everywhere except official events 100 is considered optional, just like the 3 ft by 3 ft play area,
the rulebook only says a minimum of 3 ft by 3 ft, but fanatical tournament players forget that,
and insist that it has to be by official tournament rules. That isn't so, if it's not a tournament,
for example, you don't have to use asteroids or obstacles as it clearly says on page 20
they are optional and players have to agree to use them.
I find that a larger play area throws off tournament players with their chessbook-type openings.
Another idea that will change things up is to use one set of points worth of ships to start,
but then after an agreed number of turns have another set of points worth of ships
come in as reinforcements; It's the way some missions are written.
Say if you create a build with 150 points, you could start with 90
and then replace your points as your ships are destroyed, up to 150 points.
We have three core sets and I've been meaning to create a scenario using
three Senator's Shuttles but just haven't gotten around to it.
There are actually a lot of cool ideas in the missions and scenarios,
that come with the different miniatures, that could be combined
to create some unique games.
I may add more to this later if I think of it.
Edited by gabe69velasquezYeah, I didn't mean asymmetrical points. I read about a death match game before, where you score points for destroying ships. Most points wins as opposed to the survivor (I can't find that again to see what all the rules were.) We've got plenty of missions too. I was looking for something not printed by FFG.

How does "most points destroyed" not refer to the survivor?
Variants - Subject: New Format: Escalation Furball
Wouldn't mixing and matching different mission and scenario parts
to make something new not be something not printed by FFG?
I also know of some people doing RPG style campaigns
with victory points going to upgrades and upgrading ships,
increasing pilot skills and adding slots.
But that's a campaign with multiple battles.
Edited by gabe69velasquezWe have tossed around ideas such as each person gets x number of ships, with a) no upgrades or b) any upgrades you want that it can take. Also, we've looked at one person gets one ship and sees how many turns it can last before being destroyed. Missions are great! Furballs are cool where multiple players each get a ship and the last ship to survive wins.
Then there is the campaign, where named pilots are out once they are destroyed!! Reinforcements come in after each round depending upon whether you won or lost!
Use your imagination!

Oh, and since you are looking for the unofficial,
why not try some non-FFG cross-faction custom stuff.
For example:

I keep wanting to work on a bomber mission, where one side must get a squad of bombers, escorted by fighters, to a target; the other side has fighter intercepts and a few ground turrets to try to stop them. But I have not had a chance to figure out points or setup.

The tricky part would be picking your target: I know of one person who used a paper plate as a space station. But you could also modify the disabled CR90 mission, or just use that as the target.
Hey, just came across this:
HEROES OF THE ATURI CLUSTER – CO-OPERATIVE REBEL CAMPAIGN Edited by gabe69velasquezHi, my friends and I recently started playing x-wing and have been looking for different game types. Missions and campaigns from the official expansions also offer some interesting variations on the standard game. And Furball.
