Mauler Mithel Dmg Question

By Irokenics, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

So I had this scenario happen at a local tournament yesterday.

I had my Mauler engaged in a squadron battle with some Ywings and he did his damage on the way into engagement. The next ship activation caused the ship to overlap the squadrons in which i moved them into base contact with said ship.

Now because Mauler has technically moved again into engagement does he deal the damage again? I say technically because the otherside of the coin is you can move squadrons out of engagement in the same way if the ship base is big enough.

What are your thoughts?

I would argue that Mauler Mithel was not moved, he was Placed.

He did not Move as part of a Squadron Command, where you Move and Shoot in any order, or as part of a Squadron Activation, in which you can Move or Shoot.

But, that's a real technicality of wording... It would have to be argued...

A squadron move is the same as a ship maneuver. So he has to move by either a command or squadron phase.

Overlapping does not move a squadron. It does place the squadron.

FFG is very good about the "technicality of wording" being highly relevent.

True but if you place them on opposite sides of the ship he can move back into engagement on his next activation thus activating his ability again.

Mauler says "after you move." emphasis on you, Mauler has to move either via a squadron command, or squadron phase activation.

A move action is one of two things you can do with a squadron. being displaced because of a ship overlapping, is not a squadron "moving".

After YOU move.

but as I said if you are displaced by a Ship you can place yourself on opposite sides of the ship base out of engagement range to move on your next activation for the effect.

P.S. sorry I see I wrote size instead of Sides my bad.

Yes, you are correct.

I think people are confused.

Your point is that you can potentially activate and move mauler for auto damage, even if at the start of the turn he was engaged, if your opponent is kind enough to drive a ship onto him.

Which is fine.

Fundamentally. We all agree. Mauler can do 1 auto damage salvo per turn IF he can move on his activation, whether by intel or not being engaged.

Exactly :)

I was talking about the main post, getting moved by overlap, is not going to trigger Mauler.

but yes, if your opponent is kind enough to disengage Mauler in such a manner, you can move him right back into engagement, and trigger his ability.
