Rogue Leader

By TurtleFreak, in X-Wing

People have been worried about the X-Wing for a long time, and some are even more worried now that the T-70 has arrived. That got me thinking today about what my ideal change would be. There have been many proposed fixes, but I don't think I've seen one quite like what I am proposing here, so forgive me if I'm accidentally stealing or rehashing someone else's idea.

* Rogue Leader (title)

X-Wing only

At the start of the activation phase, choose a friendly X-Wing at range 1-3 that has no pilot ability. It has your pilot ability until the end of the round. You may not use your pilot ability this round.

Cost = (0-2?)

Why do I like this?

  1. It's simple.
  2. It's thematic (imagine the leader teaching a rookie advanced tactics).
  3. It doesn't take up the astromech slot.
  4. You only need one copy of it, so it could be easily proxied or tossed in an expansion that you only want one of.
  5. The general consensus seems to be that only the generics need help, and this does just that.
  6. It essentially turns all the generics into named pilots which I think is what sets the X-Wing apart from all other ships since it has more named pilots than any other ship.
  7. It's a different kind of buff than what we've seen before. It doesn't involve negative squad points, give the ship new upgrades, or change the way the ship itself works. The closest thing to it are the IG-88 pilots, but I think it's sufficiently different from even them.

However, there are a couple problems I'm not sure how to solve.

  1. I'm not sure if this should be allowed on the T-70 because that gives those ships access to all the old abilities which would further hurt the old generics. I'm not sure how to exclude the T-70 from the "X-Wing only" criteria.
  2. I don't like the "You may not use your pilot ability this round" limitation, but it was the only way I could avoid a broken Biggs loop. Perhaps also giving the chosen ship the same pilot skill as the leader (like a super swarm tactics) would help, or is that too much?

I really dislike the "you may not use your pilot ability this round" bit. Honestly, I'd introduce a PS limitation to get past the Biggs issue ("must have PS 6 or higher"). Yeah, it means that Tarn and Hobbie get left out, but . . . well, I can't really see them as "Rogue Leader" anyway.

Also, definitely a zero-point title, since it'll cost at least 21 points to get any use out of it.

I think what ever boost is decided on should be applied to the ship class. Whether it's a refit to bring the T-65 up to T-70 stats or reducing the cost it should be applied across the board.

It's an interesting idea but I don't think it will work as a general "fix" for the T-65 X-Wing.

It would certainly make flying several X-Wings entertaining however I've think that whatever fix the X-Wing gets needs to be something that is workable on a single ship. We want the basic X-Wing to be funtional by itself so that when you have 24 points remaining in your list it is a viable choice between the X-Wing, B-Wing or 2 Headhunters rather than the option of the latter 2.

I don't agree that the named X-wings need help any less than the normal ones.

I do like the idea of a synergistic upgrade like this, and it's something I've thrown around before - running Luke and rookies and making everyone Luke, for example. ("If everyone is Biggs, does that mean no-one is?") I don't think this kind of thing is a bad option at all, but I don't know if it's necessarily the way I'd want to go with it.

My current preferred fix is a "Rogue Squadron" title - 0 points, "Whenever you are dealt a damage card, you may discard that card along with this upgrade", so it's basically a slightly better shield, with some added interest in the sense that you have to decide when to use it, and it's not necessarily straightforward. You could even make the argument that this is thematic, since the x-wing is the only ship we see repaired in combat during the films.

I don't think this is an exciting option, but it's simple and I think it covers the bases pretty well.

Biggs would love this. Would tag it onto an other ship until it dies. Then we still have Biggs. If limited by ps, we have the astro mech to gain an EPT for VI. you could pass the Biggs ability each turn and use shield regen Astros when not targeted.

Actually I don't know if this list is tournament viable. And is very annoying for casual.
