TIE/ln vs TIE/fo

By whiskeytango, in X-Wing

So, the new TIE is certainly nice, and it joins the small pool of ships with S-loops, but I can't see an Epsilon Swarm replacing the Academy swarm.

I definitely think Epsilon Leader will be seeing some play though. What an amazing ability

At the start of the Combat phase, remove 1 stress token from each friendly ship at Range 1.

It's especially nice because he get's to remove it from himself, unlike the Wingman elite talent.

Then it loses out because we have the interceptor which has boost and three attack.

Tie fo generics will never see play the extra hit point isn't enough to make it worth the extra points and TL is pointless.

The original tie is still the best.

TL is pointless.

Come on now, there is one anecdotal incident I recall that nullifies your entire point, haha! are times when I've rolled three blank reds at range one with an Academy Pilot and groaned to heaven for a target-lock reroll.

K turn/sloop as a swarm.

The idea of up to six fighters throwing target locks on ships before pounding away warms my dark First Order heart.

I think the TIE/FO will fill an interesting slot for imperials. A relatively cheap, competent ship with a shield. I'm looking forward to taking three damage and only losing two hull, which has killed many a loyal pilot.

It's got this odd middle ground between an interceptor and the regular fighter. For me, it's the plethora of green two speed maneuvers that interceptor s live and die by, but for 3 points less you get a 2 attack and shield.

Will the TIE/ln be replaced? No. Instead we have more options, which is a good thing.

Yeah, Target Lock was a really weird choice for an upgrade.

You know, S-Loop is really nice.

Yeah, Target Lock was a really weird choice for an upgrade.

Thinking about though, if it had any other action, it encroaches on other ships; if it had boost, it would threaten the interceptors role. What else then? Slam? Nope. Cloak? Nope.

Cloak? Nope.

Hey, it's been long enough.

And it IS black.

Not at all.

From an in universe standpoint the target lock would be beneficial- remember these TIEs aren't meant to be as disposable as the previous version. They have improved systems including shields

From a game mechanic standpoint, the extra action is not necessarily optimal, but it certainly doesn't hinder. With the possibility that the special forces variant is a title, the target lock could be extremely useful, not to mention any tech upgrades that come out.

I submit to you ... this Episode 7-boosted TIE swarm:

Howlrunner w/ Stealth Device (21)

Epsilon Leader (19)

Academy Pilot x 5 (60)

Rerolls for everyone but Howlrunner, stress-shedding for everyone including Epsilon Leader to make K-turns a little easier to take (you can do a white maneuver after K-turning instead of a more predictable green maneuver), and you still get seven ships on the board. Might not be too bad!

Alternatively, you could swap the five Academy Pilots for four Epsilon Squadron Pilots, which would be a net gain of one hit point (and four total noncrittable hit points) but a net loss of two attack dice, of course. Or you could drop the Stealth Device from Howlie to swap one of the fifth Academy Pilots for an Epsilon Sq. Pilot. Interesting options!

**** stealth device

**** those sh*tty little fickle bastards

Acquire ptl

I don't get the Target Lock hate. I've always thought Target Lock was really useful.

Not more useful than Focus, but still pretty awesome if you've got FCS.

Its not tl hate

Its naked action tl "not that useful"

Stack it with ptl and its hot sauce, but its not free. About the only time you use it without a free tl or 2nd action is to set up for a future turn.

PtL is actually not a bad choice with Epsilon Leader out there. I'd had *SOME* luck running Howl next to a BSP with 'wingman' to help with that stress shedding, but...Epsilon Leader does it better (MUCH BETTER).

Otherwise, yeah, always take hull over stealth. Stealth is just too **** fickle...

Target lock is one of the few ways to turn a blank into a hit. Some people are just silly and think your ship automatically explodes if you don't focus each turn.

Tie Advanced Prototype /v1 will be target locking every round.

Definitely, especially since the new rules say you can target lock the same ship repeatedly.

okay

a.) my ties beg to ******* differ, sometimes even with focus!

b.) the math around a naked TL and a naked focus versus an un-modified on the offense come out the roughly the same. Because of that, you will never take TL over the far more flexible focus (can be used with red or green, against any target you shoot at not just the locked one)

so the only time locks come into play is when you can pair them with focus or when setting up for a future turn (such as with focus, or with a red maneuver)

c.) the v1 will only be TL every turn because the title grants a free evade. It has nothing to do with the power of the action; everything to do with the free evade

Cloak? Nope.

Which makes it easier to detect in space not harder.
