Mix and matching the Tie models with bases?

By Rogue Dakotan, in X-Wing

So we all know it's cool to bring custom painted ships to the table.

But you ship has to use the correct model.

The models for the new FO Tie Fighters are slightly different I think (haven't opened my box yet).

Would you get in trouble for, say, flying Howlrunning using one of the new models?

Would this be different from flying one of your old tie fighters that had a custom FO paint job?

As long as you weren't out to fool anyone...

Technically its a different model and switching them would be tantamount to putting an X-Wing model on your Tie Fighter base, but on the other hand they're almost indistinguishable and it's really just an alt paint job...

TO discretion.

Just keep the right model on hand and it should be fine.

As a TO I would have to rule that you must use the right model with the right base and pilot card. As a player, I would not have any problems with interchanging the new TIE model with the old, so long as the base and card was correct. I would only rule it illegal if I was forced to (requested by player, which is their right).

I hadn't realised the TIE/FO was a new model and not just a repaint. I just check out a comparison on BOLS and I'm really impressed, it looks so much better. FFG's manufacture pricess has really improved since wave 1.

I think it'll be ruled that you have to use the correct model, but its up to TO to enforce it, so you'll probably see some people mixing the ships.

Eh....but there is precedent for using "rebel" Y-Wings in Scum even though there is a different model (granted that is just a paint job though correct?)

I'm sure FFG will rule similarly in the next FAQ.

They're still called Z-95 Headhunters in either faction. These two TIEs have different names.

The only issue I can see, would be if you had both types mixed into the same list, and didn't use the correct model for some of them.

So say you had 1 FO and 4 Tie Fighters, but you were using a FO model for one of the Fighters. Then I'd say that could cause issues.

But if the only thing on the table are Tie Fighters I don't think there would be a huge problem.

The TIE/fo are new models. They have slightly smaller and thicker wings. The wing roots seem a bite beefier as well. The back of the ball also has a slightly larger "dimple" that most people assume is the engine.

The real problem here is the dials - if you don't have enough of the right dials, swapping models is not ok. If you do have enough of the right dials, it means you own enough of the right ship to just use the right ship.

What do you actually gain by using the wrong model, anyway?

People may not like the look of the new TIE/fo and their repaint skills could be lacking. I don't care for the color pattern myself.
