SLAM Resolved

By Firespray-32, in X-Wing

What saddens me most is that the slam&bomb mechanic wasn't really that overpowered for such an expensive ship as the K-Wing is, but it was really thematic, unique, and fun.

If it is true that it was totally made up by the writing team, it sounds to me at least really good idea. If the designers didn't adopt it into the game, I can only think it was because of pride: the idea wasn't theirs.

Or, more likely: they know more about this game than some random members of an internet forum and weren't going to let a mistake in an article interfere with weeks of playtesting and whatever future plans they have for bomb interaction.

The article writers screwed up, and SLAM was never going to work the way they showed it. Whether you or anyone else likes it, that is how it is.

Okay. I was wrong, I admit it.

The K-Wing is a much less interesting bomber than they first advertised. Had I known this, I wouldn't have bought two.

It's offtopic to the matter of discussion, and irrelevant for most of you, but I am feeling deeply disappointed by FFG. They alter the deal, let us pray they don't alter it any further. They advertise some product with some features for $20, then they reduce the features after it is in the shelves. Feeling the same with the mandatory $40 new damage deck and the underwhelming $15 X-Wing fix.

FFG has entered a dynamic I abhor.

I guess it happens to everyone when they become too big.

Seriously? I mean... really?

80% of the ships and upgrades they put out are utterly useless, but we get articles lauding them constantly for how awesome they are. There have been any number of ability nerfs and rule changes that have taken good cards and made them pretty much useless. Their understanding of their own system was so awful that the first wave gave us the TIE Advanced, hands-down the most overpriced, useless thing this game has ever seen, and when they FINALLY fix it, they put the patch cards in a $90 box set.

But when they correct a misprinted article, that anyone who knew the rules knew was a mistake (if they chose to adhere to the rules), and remove what would honestly be an absolute trap of suckage that you'd tricked yourself into thinking would make bombs useful... THIS is what crosses the line?

X-wing fans are very weird.

I'm not interested on playing the rules lawyer anymore, because the situation is clear in the new FAQ.

It sucks that a bad ship becomes better if you buy an expensive expansion. At least there is always the chance to buy the required cards off someone else. Usually FFG have the decency of including several copies of the fixes in the packs so that you can sell or give away the ones that you don't need. In any case, it's a ship that is underwhelming and becomes much better.

With the K-Wing is the other way. It's a ship that is shown doing something cool and unique, then it is later "nerfed" not to be able to do it. You can argument that it never was able to do it in the first case, and that everything was a mistake. You can also argument that even if it is cool, it shouldn't be accepted without proper testing, and that designers know best.

But you cannot say that it wasn't an official "spokesperson" the one telling us that it could do something, then later, after it was for weeks on the shelves, denying their words without notice, and that it made a cool ship being less cool (regardless of how much less).

The closest thing I can think of is the TIE Phantom's nerf. But it was only changed after it had a lot of tournament play and had proved to be extremely broken. I don't think the SLAM&bomb K-Wing was even close to that.
