When should it be used?
New Damage Deck.
When should it be used?
When you have a copy of it. It is recommended it be used if you have both old and new in the new rulesbook.
I quite like the new one, personally.
We'll have to wait for updated tournament rules, but I'll be astonished if events don't require the new deck.
I imagine FFG would have some kind of tournament rule up their sleeves for a "transition period". I mean not everyone is going to have a new Core Set straight away. Anyone attending a tournament in the near future is still likely to have an old deck in their collection. I would think if one player doesn't have a new deck then both players would have to use old decks. Of course if you front up to a tournament with the new ships and claim you don't have a new deck then things could get interesting. ![]()

Here's a thought - if the new deck doesn't end up being sold separately, might it be included as a freebie in tournament packs?
Good idea.
I really think there will be a hard switch date for competitive tournaments, probably starting with store championships in January. It would be too complex and too easy to manipulate the system if you were allowed to choose in any way. In any case, I think we'll know soon, here's a quote from yesterday's article:
Additionally, we will publish a series of articles over the next several days that will more closely examine the Resistance’s signature T-70 X-wing, the First Order’s TIE/fo fighter, and what The Force Awakens Core Set means for the future of X-Wing Organized Play.
In casual play, I'd just use the new deck like the rules recommend, it's more fair, and WAY more interesting overall.
Edited by imprezagoateeSeeing how the new deck cards have no real 'situational' cards, like munitions failure and injured pilot, I see the option to choose which deck a tough sell. For example, if you were running generics with no secondaries or elite talents, the old deck is preferred because there is a 12% chance of drawing a worthless crit.
So I would imagine the new deck being tournament mandatory..... eventually. Before that though, you'll likely be able to choose.
Yeah, I want my opponent using the old deck, especially if they have a high PS pilot or Twin Laser Turrets.

Fixed that for ya. The new deck is harsher on lower PS pilots (unless they have secondaries). This is exactly my point about choosing damage decks, it creates this strange scenario where crit damage for me is worse/better than crit damage for you, depending on which deck we each brought, even if we had identical lists. It's the main reason I really don't think we will have an "either deck" option at all for competitive events, instead I think we'll have a hard switch date. But what do I know, I'm usually wrong lately.
It would be nice if they would make new decks available by themselves, I currently own 6 of the old starter sets/damage decks for myself and my stepson and nephews to go to tournaments with. I currently only have 1 copy of the new starter set, would be a major bummer to have to buy 5 more starter sets so we can all go to a tourney
Edited by TwizztheHunterI do think however they missed a chance to throw in a crit card that takes out astromech/crew cards. (R2D2 getting shot in the Deathstar run)
