Rule changes or new tokens in new X-Wing core set?

By Dainank, in X-Wing

I was wondering whether or not the new X-Wing core set also contains a new rulebook, with different rules as well as new tokens, besides the ships only having re-skins?

Secondly, will the new re-skinned ships be available for purchase secondly and are they going to release more ships for the new races?

Finally, will the original core set still be available for purchase?

Thank You!

It has new rulebooks, split into three: Learn to Play, Rules Reference, and Missions Book. The Rules Reference includes expanded and explained information from the FAQ and Reference cards (Cloak/Decloak updates, etc.).

New tokens for asteroids and of course, the ships, but the same maneuver templates, target locks, ship numbers, shields, etc. MOST IMPORTANTLY, though, it has a new Damage Deck that replaces the old one.

As to the ships being available separately, no one knows for sure, but it is highly probable they will be available later this month as separate blister pack expansions.

So far, the original set is still available, and FFG had it listed as "On the Boat" being reprinted. I would imagine the old sets will eventually include the new damage deck, but that's not for certain either.

The rules are new. I have to assume they will make it available as a PDF soonish. The rules have been re-written, and the game process is actually quite streamlined. It was good before, just polished and more intuitive now.

FFG has not announced any other X-Wing products, so keep an eye on the news page. No one knows anything that's not posted there. Wave 8 was announced at GenCon a few weeks ago.

They did specifically mention that the original Core is not being replaced.

It has a new rulebook, that is mostly a fixed version of the old one. So the rules are effectively the same, but worded more clearly.

It has new asteroid tokens but that's it.

The new ships which aren't just re-skinned versions, they're completely different ships with different stats, abilities and maneuvers. There will most likely be expansion packs for them at some point. I'd guess around the 16th, when LGS' get the new core.

Yes the original core was apparently just reprinted not long ago, so it will still be sold. Plus it has cards in it that you can't get anywhere else, so it's likely it will stay for sale for a long time.

Another thing is that will I need the 'new damage deck' in order to play the game in the future?

And is it possible to combine the 'old' and 'new' damage decks in one big damage deck?

No.

And we do not yet know whether the new one will be required for tournament play, most assume it will be. Outside of tournaments it is not an issue.

Casually? No, you can use your old deck. The rules say that if you have both decks available, you should use the new one. Competitively? We won't know for sure until they update the tournament rules. I expect that at some point, they'll phase out the old deck entirely, but they probably won't do that immediately.

You could, but it's definitely not intended. I don't think it would be that great of an idea, honestly. The changes in the new deck are mostly just tweaks to existing cards that created some loopholes and odd situations, and the only ones it outright replaces are the crits that had no effect on some ships while being devastating to others. (Also, I don't have the new core myself, but the preview made it look like it has a different back than the old damage deck.)

Ok Thank You for all the feedback guys! :D

Yep, the new Damage Deck has bluer background and a larger Explosion symbol. There are only 6 cards that got replaced (3 different ones, 2 of each). The rest are all minor tweaks and rewriting to clarify their effects.
