No Love for LGS :(

By atkrull, in X-Wing

The way I see it, the Target release is for atracting new players that don't normally shop at LGS. I'm waiting for miniature market to get it in stock, and I'm in no rush, I still have dozens of ship to use until then.

Close. They're in Canada.

Two weeks? my store says 10/18...

Is your store located in Timbuktu? I think everyone is going to have it available on or around 9/16 since that's what distributors are reporting to everyone.

The Canadian release date is 9/18, not 10/18. So two weeks today.

The man? Don't you mean the mouse?

Well, I can tell you that "The Man" won again. Local games stores will not be able to get the new core set on their shelves for at least a week or two. Distributors and even FFG confirm that your local game store got kicked to the curb. Everyone and their wookie will already have purchased their core set by then, except for the die hards, and stores will be left with having to figure out their orders based on how many x wingers already have their set. FFG really let me down with this decision. One or two days I could handle, but weeks is inexcusable.

You do realise that only the US actually got the core set early right? The vast majority of us will be waiting to buy it from our local FLGS because no-one has it where we are.

Personally, even if I could go out today and buy the core from a Target, I wouldn't. I'd wait the required week or two and support my local store, which is where I play too.

Good news! FLGS has updated the time to 9/18! ..but it doesn't really matter because I just dropped like $120 on the raider. :(

A store owner I know talked to an FFG rep and they said Disney made them do the deal with Target. "I spoke to a guy at FFG. Disney had FFG locked down, and it was Disney's call just to use their mass market partners, supposedly for concerns over security leaks, though all leaks came from Target employees."

Oh the irony....

To be fair, Target actually has a legal department FFG and Disney can work with to deal with those employees. An FLGS, on the other hand, would be up a river of excrement without a paddle if one employee decided to take a peak and post it online. Mind you, I'm pretty sure Disney's Acountants were mostly thinking, "Let's get everything under one roof and make an event of it," but at least we don't have any local stores dealing with vicious lawyers.

Yoda taught me control and patience. I will pick mine up when my FLGS gets them in.

Don't give into Target, that leads to the dark side of the force

I plan on buying a second one from my LGS when it's available.

THE SKY IS FALLING! UNDER YOUR DESKS, KIDS!

It's that kind of talk that only helps prevent things from progressing. The MAN loooooves you!

But there Arnt 18 months in a year...

I checked my usual online source and they are selling the new core set for $10 more than the old set. FFG has them listed for the same price. Not that I am bothering to buy one yet. Apart from the new damage deck it has nothing I can't wait for.

I think people are overlooking the cumulative effect of these kinds of things. When a new player sees Wal*Mart offering Armada for pre– order at nearly half the price (whether or not they actually follow through on it) it puts an impression into their mind, "Oh, I can get that for cheaper online." When a new player sees Target exclusively selling new Star Wars stuff in their stores (or online), it puts another impression in their mind.

The cumulative effect of all this is going to be, your local gaming store is not where you want to get the newest stuff at the earliest date for the best prices. Sure, everyone is going to say you need to support your local gaming store. That is incorrect. Only the people who actually show up to play at local gaming stores need to support their local gaming store. Everyone else, who plays at home or with friends, probably just doesn't care. Because they know they can get it faster or cheaper online. I am absolutely convinced that a vast and overwhelming majority of people who play this game are not playing it at game stores. I don't know how many units of X– Wing has been sold, but from my vantage it has most certainly not contributed to increased people in my local stores. Yes, people come in, and some of them are new, to buy the game, but that's it.

Gaming stores are being pushed out by moves like this. Imagine what will happen if Disney inks a deal with Amazon to offer all their new merchandise with free next day delivery and a discount? Some of you may say you're going to buy two sets of stuff because you want to support your local gaming store. I do not believe there are enough of such people in the world, because everyone else will just pick it up from online retailers because they are cost conscious.

Same. Also the expansions. I don't think it's a bad thing to encourage more players by having a core available at Target and it wouldn't have happened without a non-LGS release.

Good point. But it doesn't encourage more players if the veterans are buying up all the new hotness before the uninitiated ever even see it.
It sold out at the release I attended. I recognized two other x wing players. The rest bought it after curiously looking over the box. I'm fairly certain we hooked a lot of new fish last night. That's great for everyone, including the LGS.

also with us die hards getting ours early, we'll know the new stuff and can help the noobs walking in our LGS to get the sales because we can show them the game and get them hooked there.. not at Target..

So far I have managed to play one game with my new Punisher and Advances and one with my Houndstooth. None with my k-wing or Khiraxz.... I think I can wait two weeks for more toys.

TOYS?!?!?!?! TOYS?!?!?!?! ACTION FIGURES......

Yeah okay they're toys..and no you can't play with mine :P
