No Love for LGS :(

By atkrull, in X-Wing

Well, I can tell you that "The Man" won again. Local games stores will not be able to get the new core set on their shelves for at least a week or two. Distributors and even FFG confirm that your local game store got kicked to the curb. Everyone and their wookie will already have purchased their core set by then, except for the die hards, and stores will be left with having to figure out their orders based on how many x wingers already have their set. FFG really let me down with this decision. One or two days I could handle, but weeks is inexcusable.

its been said many times before. This wasnt FFG's decision. it was Disney's.

Except lots of players have decided to "stick it to the man" and hold out on buying a copy of the core so they can support their FLGS. It's worth the wait to support the place you play. And if your whole play group is waiting for the FLGS, then it's not like you have to worry about playing against the new stuff until you all have it.

Disney can't keep thousands of little shops from releasing stuff early. One big Target? Easy.

Also note FFG only Force Fridayed the new core, not the boosters.

Yeah, it's not like you can't play X-Wing with the stuff you already own. If you really don't want to support a store like Target or Barns and Noble, then just don't buy it. Waiting 2 weeks for a new toy has never killed someone.

Plus the new core may not of even showed up at Target if not for some sort of deal, and I can tell you for sure, that a LGS would rather see someone new in his store buying expansions for the core he got at Target then not see that person at all.

THE SKY IS FALLING! UNDER YOUR DESKS, KIDS!

I plan on buying a second one from my LGS when it's available.

Same. Also the expansions. I don't think it's a bad thing to encourage more players by having a core available at Target and it wouldn't have happened without a non-LGS release.

Good point. But it doesn't encourage more players if the veterans are buying up all the new hotness before the uninitiated ever even see it.

That's capitalism!

Conspiracy theorists gonna conspire...

Saying this negates the fact that this set will be sold for years to come. The initial sales of this product are only a drop in the bucket. Yes, some people will purchase from a target store in the next several days, but I've seen that these sets are largely already out of stock, and a tonne of disappointed people are already waiting anyway.

People will buy from the location that makes the most sense when they are ready to purchase. To say that FFG is ruining the LGS situation is to not have a full perspective on the sales life of this product.

So far I have managed to play one game with my new Punisher and Advances and one with my Houndstooth. None with my k-wing or Khiraxz.... I think I can wait two weeks for more toys.

That's an utterly ridiculous amount of hyperbole. Seriously. No one is getting "kicked to the curb". So stop, just... stop.

This was a limited release, to partner up with a global release day. From what numbers I saw, most Target locations had no more than 12 copies of the new core. I know of at least two dozen hard-core X-wing players who don't have it yet. Oh wait, we're in Canada so we don't even have Target stores here, so buying it for us is entirely a non-option. There are also many gamers who will intentionally wait for the FLGS to carry it, you know... to support the stores where we get to play, and build a community.

It was covered by multiple Non-Disclosure Agreements, and that's entirely impossible to manage if it was a general release to all the hobby stores, regardless of just the USA or Canada or anywhere else. Target, by and large, maintained their adherence to the NDA, other than for a few idiots, and it worked well. I'm sorry that the concept of trying to do a major surprise release makes it seems like "The Man" is trying to screw over "The Little Guy". But FFG knows full well that their entire market *relies* on the local gaming community, and not big box stores.

Honestly. Just stop.

Disney released with all the other Episode 7 stuff. Which is their job marketing a new product.

But it depends on what they do with the expansions and latter products that will set the tone for things to come. I see this as a way to get the word out, 'You mean I can fly those ships!", to a new group of players. Those players will seek places to play and discover the LGS. They will come and play and say, wow look at all those ships and join the players already out there.

As for now I will buy one from target, and a second from my LGS.

This was just a logistics issue of keeping the release as underwraps and contained as possible with the rest of the merchandise launch. That would have been nearly impossible if they had included local game stores in the mix.

I don't have an LGS, but there is one about an hour away that I love, so, 1 from target, 1 from the GS, boosters TBD.

i was going to wait anyway assuming FLGS were able to get them. Now that it is confirmed they can and they are up for pre order, order is done. Not that there is much choice up here in Canada. Not a single core set in the country as far as we can determine. This was US only and from what I have heard just Target and Barnes & noble.

Further proof this was not FFG's decision? One place that currently does NOT have them in stock, and I suspect will not until everyone else does?
FFG. Game Center told me today they were not part of the limited 'early' release and do not have it available for sale themselves, either through the website or in their brick and mortar location across from HQ. ;)

Wow, more craziness.

It's listed as it's own product now and shows status of Shipping Now on Upcoming page. So should be here soon.

Soon, yes. But if you click on the price it says Not Yet Available.

I plan on buying a second one from my LGS when it's available.

Same. 3 Ships for the price of 2 is a good way to go. Especially when they are as gorgeous as these new ships are.

Yeah if they can't get them then it's clearly not up to FFG. Or else they'd at least have them at their own store.

Two weeks? my store says 10/18...

Is your store located in Timbuktu? I think everyone is going to have it available on or around 9/16 since that's what distributors are reporting to everyone.
