Hi all
Do any of you chaps lucky enough to have got the new core set know what is going on with the new Damage Deck? Anything in the rules to say what the tournament legal status of either is? Thanks!

The core set apparently says nothing bar that if you have both you should use the new one.
I'd wager once the new Core Sets are widely available the old one will cease to be tournament legal.

i expect we will find out soon. In the article FFG posted they say:
Edited by ToqtamishAdditionally, we will publish a series of articles over the next several days that will more closely examine the Resistance’s signature T-70 X-wing, the First Order’s TIE/fo fighter, and whatThe Force Awakens Core Set means for the future of X-WingOrganized Play.
"The Damage deck included in this box replaces the Damage deck included in the original X-Wing core set. If players have both, they should use the new deck included in this box."
OK. Thanks guys. Is there any chance one of you could do me a quick photo of where it says this please? There's a lot of debate about this in the UK as we didn't get the new Core Sets yet...

In that case they better start selling the new damage deck separately.

It doesn't say that you must use the new one. We don't know yet whether it will eventually be required for tournament play.

Search your feelings. You know it to be true.
While that may be the rule for the time being, anyone like the idea of playing in a tournament with an opponent who has a different damage deck than yours does? hard to have competitive parity with 2 different decks. I think if I were the TO, I would not allow to players to compete against each other with different decks. If one table wants to both use the old decks, fine. If one table both wants to use the new decks, fine.
but since the decks are not identical, its not hard to see that using one deck or the other would be more or less favorable. I don't know what is in the new deck, I just know that it differs from the old one.
for example, how many direct hits are in the new deck?

Same amount. Full damage deck was posted to imgur last week.
suppose you are a player wit both decks going to a tourney, and after looking through both, you decide that the old deck is more favorable to you, or to your specific list, so you decide to leave the new deck at home and simply say you do not own it?
I think that eventually the rule will be that everyone must use the new deck in a tournament.
I hope the decks look different enough that people don't mix and match new and old together

I daresay that the new deck will eventually become the required standard, but FFG are obviously giving us time to adjust.
Even if the new deck isn't sold separately, I'm sure there will be plenty being sold by those of us who buy two new core sets.
No need to strap on protective headgear just yet
Nice! Why did they put that not in the mail learn to play book? Oh Well at least it's there!
As of right now, none of the new core is tournament legal as these are 2 new "sub-factions" that aren't covered in the tournament rules. The asteroids also don't show up on the tournament squad sheet yet either.

I may be proven wrong but I don't believe that will ever happen.
I also think people are making a much bigger deal out of this than it really is. It's probably a byproduct of people feeling "forced" to purchase a new Core set to get the new damage deck in order to play competitively (at least at bigger events) in the future. My question is: Why wouldn't someone want to buy at least one new Core set anyway?
Here's the thing: all indications are that the new damage deck is slightly less lethal than the old one. Have the new one? Great, use it at a tournament and your ships won't be disabled as quickly. Have only the old one? Fine, use that instead for YOUR ships. I won't mind if my hits are slightly more debilitating that your shots on my ships ....

I thought the opposite was true. Only players who brought secondary weapons cared about the "discard your secondary" crit. All players care about the "roll to see if you suffer a second crit" effect.

Agreed. If you play in tournaments, you are going to buy it. If you don't then it doesn't matter which damage deck you have.

I'm a patient man and I'm not really too worried about it, but, it's not so much about being "forced" into buying one but my wife and I play and it would mean buying two MORE sets we don't really want just to play competitively. I know enough about board game printing to know that most of the components in the box are manufactured by different companies. (ie, carboard printed at company A, dice made at company B ...) So I wouldn't see it as too much trouble to just get company C who prints the cards to ship the new damage decks for individual sale like they did with the dice.
At least, that's the reasonable thing to do if it becomes a mandatory rule at some future point.

The gray box in the middle titled "How does the Force Awakens core set fit with the rest of X-wing?" shows Resistance going with the Rebels and First Order going with the Empire. That's probably good enough for a tourny.

I think I agree with you because the squad-building section of the tournament rules say "Rebel" and "Imperial" which now include the new subfactions.
And since North American products are legal upon release, it's not like we have to wait for any green light to use them in tournaments. Right?

I would second this notion. Aside from some very specific effects that the current damage deck can have on only a portion of lists, by and large the new damage deck is nastier overall, particularly if you are able to consistently stress your opponent or have other means of stopping them from taking an action. That being said I don't believe it will be a major difference, mostly just different which I think is a good thing for the game.
