Tech upgrade: Weapons Guidance - utility?

By Trevor Goodchild, in X-Wing

So we have the full official text for the new Tech upgrade card "Weapons Guidance", it reads:

"When attacking, you may spend a focus token to change 1 of your blank results to a hit result."

I'm struggling to come up with solid scenarios where this seems to be a good investment of 2 points.

Sure we've all had those frustrating red dice throws when you have a focus token and they all turn up blanks, or one hit and the remainder blanks, but for two points?

No Recce Spec craft can use it at this time, where multiple focus tokens may come into play.

Also seems expensive and very situational to potentially guarantee a T-70's torpedo hit if you're trying to trigger a special effect of the ordnance.

Open to your thoughts and ideas on where Weapons Guidance may prove useful.

It gets better the lower your PS is. You get to the bottom of the firing order and your TIEs that didn't have to use focus to evade are now guaranteed to roll at least one hit.

I have thought the same thing since the spoilers were first put up, maybe on a T70 it will find some utility. When a T70 is at range 1 it can throw 4 dice and maybe gets three hits and a blank, at that point it probably is worth spending the focus token. Absolutely rubbish on the new tie fighter since it only has 3 attack dice at range 1, and probably won't be putting much damage downrange.

Even though it may not seem good now doesn't mean it won't be in the future.

As already pointed out, low PS ships love this card. Arc dodgers probably will see some utility from it as well. Not getting shot? Have a Focus to burn to ensure damage from that blank? Do it.

Yes I agree about PS but lets be honest, are you going to put a 2 point upgrade on a generic tie fighter? As an Imperial player the new core is underwhelming, hopefully for us Imperials the other SKUs have a better ship/upgrades. I am still excited, I am still going to buy the new core set but I do think it favors rebels.

Concur on the utility on lower PS ships - but perhaps 1 point would've made it a more viable prospect on them.

As outlined it remains very situational compared to other dice modifying EPTs or upgrades.

Great that there is a new upgrade slot on the 'next' generation of snub fighters, curious to see in due course what other options are available for this slot.

Ever used Draw Their Fire or Wingman on a Black Squadron Pilot? They have their uses. Should it be your first choice for two points? Probably not. Is it decent if you have some spare points and don't care for initiative? Sure! Some pilot ability may come out that makes this card particularly synergetic with other ships.

For example. Esege Tuketu could definitely buff a squad of Blue Squadron Novices taking this card. Slap a Rec Spec on Esege, throw some Weapons Guidance on along with an ordnance of your flavor.

I'm not saying it's optimal by any means, but it should find its uses.

Yes, I have used Draw Their Fire and Wingman on BSP. Please show me an example for the first order tie pilots using it where the 2 points wouldn't be better spent elsewhere. Omega ace doesn't want it, he wants PTL. Zeta ace could use it but he really should be barrel rolling with his ability, and he also wants PTL for boosting his attacks. Epsilon leader could use it, but none of his FO companions can use his ability in conjunction with K-turn and focus. The generics are expensive and I would imagine would get the most bang out of it with Howlrunner; new dial will be interesting for formation flying. Again, I'm not saying I wouldn't use it, but I don't think it is as good for imperials as it is for rebels. Look at Poe Dameron, he definitely can make use of it.

There are lots of cards that are better on some ships than others, this is not a new phenomenon in X-wing. There will be more tech upgrades to come in the expacks, probably some that are better for TIE?

To be fair its only a little more situational than Lone Wolf, also 2 points, which had some pretty severe restrictions of its own, though LW is still a little more flexible given its offense/defense cover. would be a potentially good combo with LW

Won't it be good on Poe? If he has a focus token his ability allows him to change one eye result to a hit without spending the token, then he can spend the token to change a blank to a hit with this. Both are dice modifications, so he should be able to choose the order.

I dunno.....I can think of a number of situations when I took a focus and I rolled some blanks instead. This card would at least make that focus not go to waste. Whether its worth 2 points still remains to be seen.

I could also see it paired with PTL and predator. A lot of options for the rebels with R2-D6 and PTL for non-ept pilots or R5-K6 to keep a target permalocked followed by focus.

Yep, it is in the bottom of my previous post.

I agree but tie fighters don't put out the damage like a x-wing. The potential damage output by 4 hits at range 1 can overpower most ships tokens and green dice.

Makes me wonder if the long awaited t65 fix will somehow include a tech upgrade.

That would actually be my guess, and implemented in a similar fashion to the TIEX1.
