New and old TIE fighter models

By SmartCookie, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Are the new TIE fighter models exactly the same as the old one (except the paint)?

If they are we could use our old models to represent the new version and use the new Pilots with the old models.

They look suspiciously similar. You'd still need the right ship tokens, though.

The new rulebook has this to say

A ship is composed of a plastic figure, pegs, a base, and a ship token, plus ID tokens if necessary.

A ships plastic figure must match the ships type as indicated on the ship card.

The X-Wings are clearly different. we will have to see whether the rules about alternate paint jobs change or address this issue for the TIEs.

Just looked at the new TIEs more closely and they are definitely different sculpts than the old TIEs. the differences are subtle, but unmistakable. Most notably, the texture on the solar panels is different.

Just to get the obvious out of the way, it's safe to assume you can't use old TIE models with new TIE tokens and dials, right?

I mean, no one is going to stop you at home or at your FLGS. I wouldn't try it at a sanctioned event, though, no--any more than I'd use a Shapeways E-wing.

The real question is, how are you going to get enough of the new tokens and dials to use with your old models without ALSO obtaining the same number of new models?

Clearly, FFG's marketing plan is to sell more models, so there's likely to be no way of obtaining new dials and tokens without having to but the new models. It's going to be the same as any other ship in that sense. It doesn't really matter if it's REALLY similar, it's still going to be a different ship.

You mean a business that earns its revenue from selling games and the related components... wants to sell more components?!? The nerve of those guys! Sheesh. Next thing you'll tell me is that they'll bring out *more* of these components and expect us to buy them too. Srsly. Jerks.

Well there are enough tokens and cards to run all four generic TIEs.

The new Tie fighter models are more than just a repaint. It is an entirely new sculpt. The panels are slightly smaller and the cockpit is slightly larger with more substancial support sruts connecting the cockpit to the panels. I play rebels and scum but these are some pretty sexy looking "eyeballs"!

The mounting point on the wings to fuselage is physically different, as are the cannons under the cockpit (old TIEs have one small nub, new FOs have double barreled cannons that are lower down). The rear engines appear different as well, but that could just be a result of a higher quality mold for the new FOs. Tiny differences, but they are there.

The mold quality of the TIE/fo's is definitely better than the original, but the differences you are talking about not a result of that.

I need to check it, but I'm sure it's a new model.

Even TIE Advanced supplied with Raider.... is not the same model as the one sold ealier - it have much more detail on frontal part of a ship. And there is a similar situation with old X-Wings, and those released some time later (not T-70, just the old T-65s but released after some time) - the first model have much less details, even if it's looking the same from some distance, you are going to find differences at closer look.

I'm really curious now what was changed in new TIE, I find it interesting :)

edit:

(KryatDragon - thanks for details what was changed!)
